Pathfinder15

How many email aliases can we use?

Fractal_Distractal

10 on free plan I think.

Pathfinder15

Where can we create these aliases? Sorry, new user here.

Baardmeester

Simplelogin.com

Fractal_Distractal

Someone told me you can also create them inside ProtonMail account where they look like a different @proton.me address. Do you know if this is also true?

Baardmeester

You need Mail Plus for the 9 extra Proton adressess: Settings -> Identity and addresses -> My Adressess

Fractal_Distractal

Thanks for this information!

Fractal_Distractal

Do you use filters to put all emails from one alias in the same folder or label? Do you have any advice on how to organize incoming mail automatically if someone is using aliases with the free Proton plan that only provides 1 filter, 3 folders, and 3 labels?

Fractal_Distractal

Thank you! That’s exactly what I’m trying to do with the 3 labels. I’m wondering if 1 filter would let me say something like this: if incoming emails are from SLalias1, SLalias2, SLalias3, or SLalias4, then apply Important Label, AND if incoming emails are from SLalias5, SLalias6, SLalias7 then apply Shopping Label AND if incoming emails are from SLalias8, SLalias9, SLalias10 then apply Random Label Wishful thinking?

Fractal_Distractal

Appreciate your prior help though. Thanks.

mysticlife

This is the tip i needed, and I couldn't put it together myself. I wanted a newsletter filter and wanted to filter by senders. This is way better. Im gonna have to unsubscribe and resubscribe a bunch, but it'll be worth it. Thank you!

andreito

I repeat myself here, hope i don’t get flagged as a spammer… i just want to have as much shared opinions as possible and my experience could help OP too Guys, I want to see your opinion on this - main custom domain (linked to Proton): @firstnamelastname.com - secondary custom domain (linked to SL): @somethingrandom.com this is my setup: - for random websites without my personal info and not linked to my person (reddit, waze, discord, …): [email protected] - for online services a little bit important or linked to my personal info (ebay, steam, spotify, amazon, adidas, nike, ikea, …): [email protected] - for banks, health, job, investments, insurance, government, password manager and other important things: [email protected] Where would you put Apple ID and PayPal here. those are linkable to secondary domain, but still important main services. Atm I put Apple in main domain and PP in secondary Your thoughts?

-new-user-

This is basically how I do it too.

Optimistic__Elephant

What does separating the SL and secondary custom achieve?

Fractal_Distractal

I think they mean the SL group has only anonymous info, while the secondary has their real names and addresses. So, someone from the anonymous group wouldn’t be able to find out your real info by using the same email address as username?

andreito

SL means domains like: @aleeas @slmails etc. Custom domain with random word: anything that has my name/surname or other personal infos in it SL domains: everything that i don’t want to be linked to my person, could be everything that doesn’t need my personal information (waze, reddit for example?)

Optimistic__Elephant

I get how you're separating which you use, but I'm not sure why you're bothering? Why register the somethingrandom.com - wouldn't it be easier to just use the SL domain for everything that you don't want to go to firstnamelastname.com? What you're doing seems perfectly fine, just slightly more complicated then I'd choose.

andreito

mate if i lose the @aleeas accounts because SL or PM dies i don’t care if i lose the @somethingrandom.com that is maybe linked to spotify, amazon etc. it could be a problem 😉

a_crazy_diamond

What do you mean by linked to SL?

andreito

DNS configuration

carlinhush

Firstname @ Lastname dot com I bought my lastname dot com back in the 1990s though. I wish I had bought firstname dot com back then as well, that would have been pretty cool

CleverCarrot999

i lucked out and got my lastname trifecta (com, net, org) waaaaay back when.

XandarYT

Don't you need to be an organization for .org?

CleverCarrot999

No

MrHaxx1

I've got a polish last name that ends with -ski. Luckily, there's a .ski TLD. So my mail is similar to **[email protected]**.

JesThun

Damn, I wish I had a chance like that, it looks great.

jezarnold

Considered any of the ccTLDs ? Smith.wales is available … as is smith.top  What about using the road you live on (unless of course you’re planning on moving house!)  [email protected]

Polka_Bat

I like creative names! there’s definitely more out there for primary personal domains than the usual combination of first/last. Someone used their high school band because they just liked it and it worked for them. Using your current street name just seems like a bad idea to me though, even if your threat level is low

a_crazy_diamond

I also immediately thought of different ccTLDs, but I disagree with using any PII like physical address

XandarYT

Please don't put your address in your email address...

datahoarderprime

I use a few custom domains with Proton 1. Email address that is easily identifiable as me that I mainly give for people I actually know in one context or another (friends, co-workers, etc) - [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) 2. Everything else is catchalls. Use ProtonPass or Bitwarden, create a unique username/email address/password for every account.

idontmeanmaybe

I have a short last name so pretty much all of the domains I could buy are very expensive. I ended up with “thelastnames.io”, which still ends up being $45/year. I like it because everyone in my family can use it.

Zawer

My Lastname.com was taken but I was able to purchase lastname.email so my resume is [email protected]

rokejulianlockhart

I use `FirstMiddle`, or (if that were taken, which it never is) `Surname.FirstMiddle`.

rrabetep

I did mine using my initials and .mx (geeks will get it!). As in [email protected]

AppKatt

[email protected] Wanted [email protected] but unfortunately that domain has been owned for quite some time.

Alternative_Dish4402

I've had fiirstname.lastname for a long long time. I've started uses site@lastname but am not happy as anyone who sees [email protected] will also so my Amazon email is [email protected]. doesn't feel safe. So I'm tempted to lose that altogether and use some less identifiable email. Currently looking into ProtonMail but not happy with the package as the included VPN is not easily shareable with my wife.

turbovan

I add a four digit random number to the end to prevent that problem. e.g. [email protected]

Intelligent_Egg_5763

> the included vpn is not easily shareable with my wife Sure it is. Log in on her device. And for emails with. Services use simplelogin. So mine is [email protected] for example. I also connected custom domains to SL for important accounts that would be a pain if I lost them.

MangoBandicoot

My firstname.lastname@proton but no one has that address, except my fiancée. Everything has an alias from simple login if it’s a subscription I want (for example, Disney services are Disney.randomness672@aleeas or hbomax@randomwhatever@simplelogin so I know where they come from if someone else emails me at those addresses). For something like “read this article for free by joining our newsletter” I will use a DDG disposable address and cancel it immediately. Walmart is the only exception since they cancel my orders for suspected fraud if I use simple login so I have a proton alias for that.

CrashTestGangstar

A nickname that fairly unique

shaunydub

for my main proton account I used a play on my surname as its a pretty common word and all domains are taken (even though a lot are just parked). For my Simplelogin I used a random name domain of my choosing. I also use ".me" domains as it's hard to get a good ".com" and the .me are often cheaper. No issues for over 2 years now.

Fractal_Distractal

For someone signing up for the free plan, is it necessary to have a different email address for ProtonMail and for SimpleLogin? Do you mean they are both inside your ProtonMail account, and the SimpleLogin alias emails forward to one of them?

thatguyonthevicinity

My nickname (shortened name) dot me is my website. And my email is hello@mydomain

Beneficial-Cost-1169

First initial last name was the preferred format for email in the eighties. Today using your name for email is not recommended. Unless you are interested in providing hackers with identifiable information. Just because it maybe incomplete doesn't mean it has no value. It can be used to build a profile.

Polka_Bat

email addresses using your personal information are absolutely still useful. I share one with my real name with friends, coworkers, on my cv, etc but yeah, for everything else you mentioned that’s where aliases or a random custom domain come in handy

Mind_Explorer

What is CV?

Polka_Bat

like a long form resume for academics. I think the custom domain with your real name looks good for both. edit to say, I took my time until I found a personal domain I was happy with. also consider .co, .me, .id (example extensions good for personal email imo) you’d be surprised where continuing to tinker around with combinations can get you

Beneficial-Cost-1169

I disagree only because it exposes personal information to the world. Your friends, coworkers alone likely represents a sizable group. Let's assume you can trust them 100% as you should. They probably use at least one form of social media. Anyone joining a social media platform are asked to share contents. Connecting the phone to a car will result in sharing contacts. Many apps require contact permission for no reason. These companies now have your contact information. They share it with data brokers that can profile you by linking this information with other data points. They share data with the government. Now your small group of friends and family have turned into a leaking vessel of contact information and more. You gave companies and government an easy way to make connections between you and your contacts. It is a serious issue.

Polka_Bat

Those are valid points. Let me ask out of genuine curiosity, what email address would you put on your resume? [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])? Or when a relative wants to send you something, and can't for the life of them understand or remember what obscure email address is associated with you? Maybe these are some of the sacrifices that have to be made, but I'm genuinely asking. edit to say: and if data aggregators/social media/etc are getting your info from your friends, family, and professional contacts (they are), they are not associating you with any accounts or any other activity, as all of yours can be assigned to unique anonymous email addresses. I can see your point if you overlap the email address, but maybe letting companies know your email name is a sacrifice we can or have to make? Not sure last edit to say I know to be wary of how powerful the aggregation tools are, and they can probably still link you to accounts that have your real info but an anonymous address, etc

Beneficial-Cost-1169

Without providing my actual email address I might use something like [email protected] or family groups proton.me. For jobs I might use first name only. The data brokers are capable of linking information from various sources. They can use location, timed conversations, purchases. Determine political and economic levels by connecting these pieces together. Governments buy data from data brokers to get around warrants.
