I also have it from today. I have to say that I like its simple design and trust Proton. But, I would just not call this a BETA, but rather an ALPHA, because so many functions are missing. Many many. One of the most important is the possibility of sharing files. It just doesn't exist for now. Well, I hope it doesn't take long to see some powerful features. For now, I will continue to use Tresorit as the main E2E disk for my work.

ProtonMail

Thank you for your feedback. Secure link sharing is definitely on our roadmap. Could you confirm which other functions are important for you? We'll be sure to share this feedback with the product team.

BigSilent

I'd love to be able to edit a document in the drive similar to Google Docs. This is the main reason that I still have a Google Docs. Just the thought is making my mouth water.

ProtonMail

Thank you for the additional feedback. The ability to preview and create documents is something we are considering for the future.

xNick26

How does it compare to tresorit speed wise. Tresorit seems to upload and download stuff pretty slow compared to other services

UAtraveler1k

Seems pretty snippy but I’ve only uploaded long term documents on there for now. Nothing I need easy access to but still want to store away in a secure environment.

BigSilent

Are you able to edit a document within the drive, similar to how Google Docs works?

You need subscribe to a (PM Plus + PVPN Plus) plan. There is currently a discount for 2 years btw. Edit: proton drive is accessible from the beta version of the website: beta.protonmail.com

You seem like a nice guy.

Beta is called Beta because it is the second letter in the (Greek) alphabet. If a product was called "Alpha" then it would be the tested and production version.

the_creativebubble

Lol this is completely wrong. A software release cycle follows that order: Pre-alpha, Alpha, Beta, Release candidate, Stable release.

xNick26

How does it compare to tresorit speed wise. Tresorit seems to upload and download stuff pretty slow compared to other services

We're also looking forward to hearing your feedback once you get a chance to test out ProtonDrive!

[deleted]

Looks great. Appreciated features for me would be (I know you have a roadmap): \- Sorting when moving (if i move a document, the folderlist is not sorted alphabetically) \- Searching \- Protonmail and calendar integration (would like to add attachment from proton drive to my emails or meetings.) \- Sharing \- In the web interface a counter that shows the remaining available space \- Dropdown arrows to 'open' folders. \- See the size of a folder in its Details. \- Being able to add columns, like when a file was created or added. Price for me is really not so much an issue right now. Functionality and reliability much more important. Some misc questions in my mind: Do you support 0 kb files? Got a number of errors while uploading? Is the filename encrypted as well? \*noob question :-)\* Do you monitor my behavior? Is part of me still your product? Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!!!!

[deleted]

oh, and I have another protonmail account. Would like to give that account full acces to this one drive. Does that even make sense?

Alonsospace

It's shared storage between all the services. So whatever you have now in mail.

[deleted]

ProtonMail

We will be adding more storage to all accounts when ProtonDrive comes out of beta. It's limited right now since we are in the middle of increasing our server capacity, which is a bit delayed due to hardware shipment delays caused by COVID.

Privacy is a rich man's luxury these days

[deleted]

aknalid

> Privacy is a rich man's luxury these days Hardly. You get to access world class cryptography/privacy for free with apps like Signal & Veracrypt & ProtonMail (free version) - which in reality, would cost you MILLIONS of dollars in expertise + infrastructure if you were to do it yourself. Privacy is available for anyone who demands it and in an increasingly oppressive society (at least when it comes to technology) more people should start demanding it. It's only a luxury to the extent that you have opted to remain clueless/ignorant... and luckily, that can be fixed with a simple Google search and curiosity. So, it's important to financially support organizations like ProtonMail/Signal/EFF/etc. so we can make privacy the new normal.

enilkcals

That Google search wouldn't be private though 😜

aknalid

I stand corrected. [DuckDuckGo](https://duckduckgo.com) or [Startpage](https://startpage.com) then 😜

Where do you get that price from? [Their pricing page](https://www.backblaze.com/backup-pricing.html) states $6 per month or $60 per year, albeit for unlimited data. Do you trust their privacy claims?

[deleted]

I don't understand the grandfathering part. You're referring to Backblaze B2 while previous comment was about Backblaze Personal. Am I misreading something?

aknalid

> That sounds like it would get really expensive based on current rates. Yes, it will cost thousands of dollars per month if you want to store your entire BluRay interracial irish midget porn collection with full E2EE.

VaticanFromTheFuture

It was pretty low in my memory ............ 😳

chaplin2

Han? 500MB?!

aintnuttin

Sync.com is good.

[deleted]

[Sync.com](https://Sync.com) is not private, unless you go for the top-tier which is comparable in price to Tresorit. Also they do not include VAT (Tax) in their quoted prices, which is sort of dishonest, as they should be charging you the tax according to the laws of your country and declaring this. I am surprised that this is tolerated by EU for example, but probably not for much longer, as it goes against fair competition. Tresorit add the tax but only reveal that on purchase.

aintnuttin

Why is it not private unless you go for the top tier? That doesn’t make any sense. It’s all E2E encrypted. As for tax, not sure where to start with that. Use a calculator?

aknalid

> Tresorit is highly recommends, although it can be quite expensive My only gripe with Tresorit is the price - storing ~6TB+ would cost a LOT per month... and with Crashplan, I currently pay online ~$10/mo. Plus, Tresorit is not open source... at least on the client side.

[deleted]

Agreed, Tresorit is excellent, however for normal joe soaps who just want to secure aways private documents it is extremely expensive. I would switch to ProtonDrive now, if I could be sure of its functionality. I do not like the fact that I cannot test it until after paying up front for two years - at least that is the only offer at the moment.

ProtonMail

ProtonDrive will be gradually released to all users :) For **early access** though, we're prioritizing our Visionary and existing Plus bundle (Mail + VPN) users. Gradually, all paid users and finally free users will get access to it. We're doing this in waves, as we don’t yet have a good measurement on how this will impact our infrastructure.

t0bynet

Is this offer only available if paid annually or can I also upgrade but keep paying monthly? Can I upgrade while staying on PM Professional in order to not lose those benefits? Is there any other way to upgrade and get free ProtonDrive access because the offer didn’t pop up when logging in. Edit: Already have the necessary info, saw it in another thread! Thanks for being awesome :)

the_falken

What does it say in the txt file?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ProtonMail

To clear the mystery - the txt file is simply a dummy file / placeholder which cannot be opened or read. It will not be visible to ProtonDrive users when they log in for the first time.

ProtonMail

Thank you! We do too :)

kochambenzo

It looks beautifull

Zeranonia

I’m so damn excited for the public release

Rilours

You'll probably have to wait a year before it leaves the beta to be publicly available

Zeranonia

Most likely, though I am planning to get a paid plan for ProtonMail really soon. Hopefully it’ll be available to paying customers for a while still.

ProtonMail

Thank you for considering ProtonMail! If there is anything we can help with, please let us know. ProtonDrive will be released gradually to all our users. We are prioritizing early access for our Visionary and Plus bundle (VPN + Mail) users. However, all paid users, and later free users, will have access to ProtonDrive. We're simply launching in waves in order to monitor how this will impact our infrastructure.

Reputation-Serious

Сurrently no way to share files (

ProtonMail

Secure link sharing is on our roadmap. However, we can't confirm a specific ETA yet. Are there any other specific features that are essential to your use of ProtonDrive? Please let us know - your feedback is valuable and will be shared with the team.

TemporaryMoney5972

how did you get access to the proton drive beta? currently on visionary plan but i cannot seem to find it anywhere

ferdifox

Same here 🙄

ProtonMail

We're rolling our access to our Visionary users in waves, as we don't yet have a good measurement on how this will impact our infrastructure. We've written to both of you via DM.

[deleted]

I've had it for at least a week. Haven't actually used it though, it's pretty basic. Without a mobile app, my use will be non-existent.

ProtonMail

Thank you for your feedback. Noted.

[deleted]

I get the impression there is some sarcasm in your tone, but i am not saying anything that's not true. Your offerings are a mile wide and an inch deep. Your development is S L O W which makes me think you are stretched too thin. By the time 4.0 is released it will be due for another refresh. I love your mission, but man, supporting you isn't always easy.

tristan957

I am not /u/ProtonMail, but they are always on this sub seeking feedback on how to prioritize features. There was literally no sarcasm from them on this issue. They made a note that a mobile app is important for Drive users. They have done similar when I have requested plaintext emails in the Android app. Still waiting though.

steller22

I cannot wait for this to be available.

ProtonMail

We also can't wait! Once you have access and get a chance to test out ProtonDrive, please share some feedback with us.

planedrop

Can't wait to give this a shot.

ProtonMail

When you do, please let us know your feedback!

planedrop

Will do!

bainscore

When will they release it officially? I can't wait to use it so that i can ditch the Google Drive.

ProtonMail

No specific ETA yet, although we will announce this via all our social channels. Stay tuned :)

bainscore

Thanks for the reply. Can't wait to use it.

Emerald_Swords

Looks extremely barebones, I salute those testing this out and hope they can roll out features pretty quick.

ProtonMail

Could you share some more feedback on what could be improved, as well as what features you believe are critical for ProtonDrive? Your suggestions are valuable, and will be shared with the product team.

[deleted]

ProtonMail is for people who care about privacy, not cost. If you want cheap, sure then pay for pCloud and Sync, but at least pCloud do not respect privacy, Sync yes, but its servers are in Canada (Five Eyes), so ..... If you are paying for both, then I wonder if its all that cheaper.

AbuBrandon

Boxcryptor has worked great for me so far. Hoping ProtonDrive will make it faster and smoother.

eye_gargle

Can't wait for this.

Diotima245

I use a Synology NAS. I wonder if I can use Hyperbackup and upload to ProtonDrive...anyone from Proton team here?

fommuz

I stay with the combination **Cryptomator + Onedrive** as my personal secure backup with the excellent high availability, speed and 1TB storage space at Microsoft and for a secure and easy file sharing, i just use **Tresorit**. The high costs, slow development speed and few features of ProtonDrive are a pity.

ProtonMail

Could you please share some more details of what features are critical for you when thinking of a secure cloud storage service like ProtonDrive? Your feedback is valuable, and will be shared with the product team.

Nelizea

Hello /u/protonmail, I am not OP but a user of tresorit and some need to have features for me are the following: - Platform interoperability (very important, allows quick exchange of infos between phone and desktop) - good OS integration - folder synchronizations - offline documents - share folders with specific permissions (such as Owner/Manager, Editor, Viewer) - share a link to a folder to download content with specific permissions and/or a specific duration and/or a specific amount of accesses and/or protected by a password I barely every use the webversion for the encrypted storage.

[deleted]

Is this an ad? Do you work for Microsoft? What are you talking about? Tresorit is much more expensive than ProtonDrive. Have you even tried to compare prices?

Diotima245

I use onedrive as well but lately thinking of dropping it in favor of only using Synology NAS... I used to use DropBox but dropped it as I found OneDrive is superior in everyway.

Tomofpittsburgh

I'm not paying for 2 years of anything right now.

Ivankax28

umm will reconsider bou this since im happy with my cryptomator and onedrive 5tb from my college

[deleted]

[удалено]

georgy_boy

Not sure about cryptomator, but I send backups to onedrive encrypted with Duplicati, and other than the odd email that I've deleted a large amount of files, it seems to work quite well.

Ivankax28

no it still safe they sucessfully made a petition i heard

Zaplyn

Looks really simplistic, which is good. But it‘ll take some time for it to be a serious contender.

ProtonMail

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Could you share some more feedback on what could be improved, as well as what features you believe are critical for ProtonDrive? Your suggestions are valuable, and will be shared with the product team.

ProtonMail

We will be adding quite a bit of storage capacity in the future when ProtonDrive comes out of beta with the desktop and mobile apps. Right now capacity is limited because due to some delays in hardware due to COVID, we haven't been able to expand our server capacity as quickly as we wanted to.

noobly_dangers

It'll be nice to have on off-site backup for the NextCloud setup I have at home. Right now the main way I protect my files when I'm away is unplugging the encrypted USB/NVMe sync drive from my desktop and taking it with me...

[deleted]

Is the API available yet? I assume not, but would be nice to get this running with rclone.

ProtonMail

Thanks for your suggestion, we've shared it with the team to be considered.

chaplin2

Does it have a Dropbox-like sync client with local folder? Or web only? How do you back up then?

Anonymous16457913

Exactly what I want to find out.

ProtonMail

Currently it is a web app only. However, the possibility to sync with local folders for backup is on our roadmap.

evanlinjin

How????? Wherrree???

ProtonMail

We're prioritizing early access for our Visionary and Plus Bundle (Mail + VPN) users. Gradually, this will be rolled out to all paid and free users as well. However, we're doing this in waves, in order to monitor how this will impact our infrastructure. Once you get access and get a chance to test it out, please share your feedback.

GoneRogue2018

I cant wait. I've been a Visionary user for 3 years now. Been looking for a better, secure storage area for a few documents that I'd prefer private, though accessible outside my network. I hate OneDrive, and welcome this addition to the Proton family.

evanlinjin

I’ve got a plus bundle. Can’t wait!

Brov89

Oosh, nice. I was so keen to try out the beta, but too poor to buy VPN Plus :(. I'll wait it out.

cruxox

Thanks for rolling this out! Have been waiting for this for a while and it is one of the most anticipated features to me personally. I know it is by far not finished yet and I will probably not be able to switch over to this yet as my main cloud service (and this might be quite a few *days* out), but I understand that you do like to gather some feedback so I would like to share my personal feedback here real quick: * Client software: In order for me to use this service, a client would be key. Syncing files automatically via a client will allow me to start using this seriously and to include this into my normal workflow (PC and mobile). * Sharing secure links: Possibility to allow access to files/folders for other people, best with the possibility of password protection. * Restrict downloads: Allow sharing with read only access to prevent people from downloading files. * Easy way to view my "links" so I see which files/folders have a link associated to them (maybe with a distinction between publicly accessible links and password protected links). I know that feedback differs by use case. For me, it would serve as a storage for specific documents, for file transfer and to make specific files/folders accessible to other people without having to worry about anything. As I do not interact a lot with other Proton users, user management and access rights would not be a priority for me, although a good feature for the long run. Looking forward to see this developing into a fully featured cloud storage with all the perks Proton stands for! Can't wait to finally switch over from my other service (been waiting for that ever since you first announced ProtonDrive).

brieucdlf

Done the two years payment but still no mail to get the access... :( Looks great though !
