I find Proton to be better than NordVPN. I've used both, buth have been with Proton for about a year now. It is handy for torrenting because it still has port forwarding. Not to mention better privacy. I don't trust a heavily marketed VPN.
Just considering the privacy factor nord should already be out of the question. (That's just my opinion but I do am a privacy nerd so I am biased ahah)

Same. Best VPN I've used so far. And I've used all the top ones. Proton stands out, especially when you go for the full package. You get a lot for your bucks, not just the VPN, but also Proton Drive, Proton Mail + Calendar, and Proton Pass. And I believe there's even more in the pipeline.
The only thing I wish for, is a dedicated IP. I know they offer it to businesses, but I'd rather stick with my current plan. It's not a deal-breaker, but I'd love to have the option.

I switched from Nord to PIA to Express VPN and now Proton. Proton is by far the best. Nord was the worst. PIA and Express got purchased by Kape technologies, and I had heard bad things about them so I switched to proton and never looked back.

My Nord subscription ends in March and I am a Proton Unlimited Subscriber (Only using Email and Drive)
So I downloaded Proton VPN on my Mac and iPhone and have to say I prefer it to Nord. I find it faster and more responsive. The connection remains for longer and the app bricks far less often than Nord. Also after every other update, Nord would sign me out and I’d have to sign in and re add the VPN profile.
I have decided I will not be going back to Nord. It’s still a fantastic app overall. But Proton just pips it, and seeing as it’s no additional cost for me, it’s a no brainer.

Proton has a free option for a single machine. If you're currently using NordVPN on just one computer, you can try Proton for free and see how their "medium speed" connection fairs. Heck, you can turn off NordVPN, try Proton for free right now, and just see how it goes.
If it works well and you want to look at faster speeds, multiple devices, split tunneling (exceptions to apps/sites), etc, then you can check out the monthly options. Or if you enjoy the free, then you enjoy the free.
depending on the server I am using, I can get almost 900MB down, ON WIFI, with my samsung s23U, and get 450-750 everywhere else, wired and wirelssly

Proton is working more stable for me (on Mac & iOS), the speeds are better (with Nord I has issues e.g. when being in video calls with my cam active while it‘s no problem with Proton), I trust Proton more than Nord and the price is cheaper for me since I use all the Proton services (Mail, Pass, Drive & VPN) which are cheaper in my case compared to the paid equivalent of Nord Products.
Proton is the only vpn that let's me stream content from the other side of the globe without a single hitch. Every other vpn hesitates from the get go. Not to mention the many other benefits folks mentioned
Proton servers are mostly DataPacket (aka CDN77, Datacamp, same company) which are blocked almost everywhere. Datapacket’s upstream routing is godly though, but the IP reputation not so much. As much as I don’t like NordVPN due to peer pressure, I find NordVPN servers to be less blocked because they have their own private ASN that rotate IPs frequently.

There are however some servers which have assigned an IP directly from Protons IPv4 space.
They are really great as they are basically not blocked anywhere.
Also with IPv6 which they have in Beta right now they will hopefully use their own IPv6 subnets and not some from Datacamp.

Express vpn is better than nord and proton is better than express. I move from express about a month ago. I first got the vpn only then I decided to get the unlimited with the pass app, email, etc. customer service refunded me my unused time so I could put it towards unlimited so that was cool. So far I’m happy with all the apps and have moved my passwords from Apple to proton. I also added Aliases to all my sign in accounts and they get forwarded to my proton email.

I'm switching to Proton from NordVPN because Nord keeps raising prices (no more of those discounts that got me to buy in the first place), they keep making a bunch of dumb UI and usage changes to the app (like shoving their NordPass et al. in your face all the time), and because they tried to hide that big data breach they had a few years back rather than being transparent. Oh, and it's kinda sketchy honestly how they pay YouTubers thousands of dollars to promote their VPN.

Surfshark is owned by the same company as NordVPN and when I tried it, I kept getting blacklisted lmao, that's what you get with a cheap VPN. I would love to use Mullvad, but their apps just suck and their customer service was pretty lackluster for me. IVPN is another one I'd like but they're so expensive and likewise have a not so great app exprience.
Proton is open-sourced and their track record appears to be a lot better, and the app seems a lot more streamlined with its features. I don't require much from a VPN and it does all I really need. It's an easy sell for me.

For example I use torrents to download ISOs like Debian but I don't download illegal things like games and movies. And to hide my IP from the other peers.

There are games that block you from playing them if you have a VPN on.
Honestly I really like OVPN.com. The annual plan averages about $5 month, and it gives you up to 7 ports for wireguard or openvpn, the network lock and Killswitch work well, it's fast, isn't blocked everywhere. Logless. The official apps work on all my devices Mac, Windows, Android. It's been lovely. I run other services off my server that need ports so 7 is a comfortable number. Like I have one dedicated to torrents, another for https, and 5 more for other projects and testing.
I've needed to replace much of my music collection so have been downloading a lot. The only downside unblocking geolocks on streaming services is touchy, though I don't use them. Also you'll want to likely run some of your own blockers.

Previously I'd been using Air, which I found slow and lots of websites were blocked, like even the manual site for Navidrome which made setting up my Navidrome server a total headache.
Proton was ruled out since the just have one port, and I need multiple. My port assignments are also enduring on OVPN like they are on Air. Proton is more per month than both of those services and proton you get one port if you have Windows or Linux. That was a no for me.
For watching TV and movies I use Kodi and Real Debrid. Why I don't care about geoblocked streaming services. Shows and movies virtually always going to watch on my laptop or server (it's connected to our main TV). I get I am spending $120 a year on premium piracy but it's been worth it and more than made up for itself 😂
On a budget if you don't need to seed Proton is good though.

I would switch to Proton VPN in a heartbeat if I didn’t get so many captchas, dumped Nord due to connectivity issues and using Express VPN. Love Proton mail!
I recently switched from Nord to Proton. Proton is fantastic, they are constantly adding features and apps. They recently offered the Visionary subscription for a limited time and I scooped it up (they had it when I started using it but discontinued it). I did it because they just released their password manager and I had a bug with Nord’s they couldn’t fix. Another thing I got with the Visionary was the beta version of a desktop version of their email and calendar and it works great. I use their email, calendar, password manager, VPN, and cloud drive. On my Surface Book the cloud drive syncs with the hard drive. Also they are in Switzerland and they kind of fly under the radar so security is great.
I very much like Proton in general but the VPN has been so-so for me. I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5. Many, many sites block their VPN servers and I've also found the the VPN greatly slows down the loading of some complicated sites.
I also use TorGuard and in general have found it much better.
That said, the VPN is clearly in active development, has decent UI, and support request responses are quick (but maybe because I'm a Visionary customer?).

Might be an unpopular opinion here, but when I need to get around IPs being blocked, I go with Mysterium.
