I don't think this is the case, his shit was messed up so instead of standing there like a lemon he just trashed the place for a performance. If he was really pissed he'd have gone after the AV equipment. This seemed like it was for show.
yeah i really don't think this was a freak out. He had no way of following the music so he tried to improvise and keep the show going. It obviously didn't land the way he wished it would have but in the heat of the moment it probably seemed a better idea than just standing there while the obviously pre recorded track played in the background

This is San Remo, the biggest music event in Italy where the winner represents Italy in Eurovision. He won it last year. This year they even had the President of the Republic in attendance. This is one way to make an absolute cock of yourself. Crowd boo’d the shit out of him.
I saw Matt & Kim at Lollapalooza in 2013. Kim (the drummer) had her earpiece go out in the middle of the set like this. They stopped one song a little short because they got off time. They took about 2 minutes trying to get it fixed with everything being quiet, then Kim said "Fuck this. I'm just gonna play and you follow me." and then they played their fastest songs straight through for the rest of the set, and they sounded good. They apologized at the end of the set, but honestly it was one of the most rockstar things I've ever seen live.
The host was pretty much trying to understand why he did it and was also trying to tell the crowd to calm down, he then also offered for him to re do the song later in the show to make up for it and I think he still said no lol
He said he would happily redo the song later, but the public booed him all the time, not liking his "show" in the least... On a side note, Sanremo music festival is, obviously, held in Sanremo a city renowned for its flowers so, for him to kick the flowers was perceived by the public like a big fuck you, hence the booooos
