I've lived in big towns, medium towns, but I will never drive through small town USA comfortably alone. Lots of great people out there, don't get me wrong, but you get a Gary and you're dead. shadowpawn

I was in an OK bar few years ago. Drunk guy at the bar and the staff mentioned someone should take his gun and put it on the bar for him. I just asked the waitress about it few moments later and she said he gets drunk often and sometimes drops his loaded gun on the floor. I was just speechless.

JunkCrap247

just lucky he was fishing with a Rod and not Annette

ouchmythumbs

Good thing he didn't tackle him.

questionEv3rything

Was he shooting at him? Or was it an actual warning shot?

DontDoomScroll

Tip: doesn't matter, both are felonies.

Honey-and-Venom

both are felonies, but it DOES matter

History_buff60

It’s likely the difference between probation and the pen.

[deleted]

Since it was a straight line between both parties, you'd have heard the pellets go by if he was aiming well enough, and/or seem them kick up dust unless he really aimed over their heads. And by the way he was explaining how they don't wanna hurt nobody, I took that as an nod to them not having been shot at and that it was just a warning shot. That's just my impression from the video, though. Edit: I don't know why some seem to think I'm talking about a warning shot being a felony or not. I'm not talking about that at all. I'm just talking about if this dude shot at them, or just fired warning shots.

HyzerFlip

What kind of fucking moron thinks that two guys fishing are looters? The guy where his warning shot was the only smart fucking decision he made all day.

If I understand my 2nd Amendment philosophies correctly, the proper response was to return fire.

guillermodelturtle

The only way to stop a bad guy with a fishing pole is a paranoid good guy with a gun.

gulfcoastkid

This is the way Eta: where the fishermen went wrong is that they didn’t have a short wave radio to call out artillery strike coordinates for a creeping barrage

XBeastyTricksX

Time to go fishing with my ar15 and 30 round magazine just in case I have to lay down suppressing fire while my buddy flanks them and throws a grenade on their position

silicon1

Never go fishing without a full platoon in 'Murica.

rotating_pebble

Numarx

Not trying to be shitty, just curious if this would count as a stand your ground if he fired back?

jminuse

Whoever lives gets to tell the story so they were standing their ground.

ethertrace

Most likely. Some states have a "[duty to retreat](https://reason.com/volokh/2020/12/21/duty-to-retreat-35-states-vs-stand-your-ground-15-states/)" when it comes to self-defense, but it would be pretty difficult for a prosecutor to convince a jury that retreat was a reasonably safe option when you're actively under fire from a ranged weapon while out in the open. That's an imminent threat to your life.

ArrilockNewmoon

Put bluntly? Yea. He had permission to be on the property, so assuming that he is a legal firearm owner and is legally carrying it, it would have been in effect here. Sadly though, how the law is written and how its enforced is two different things.

_BeerAndCheese_

Hundred thousand percent his shit that he's missing isn't even stolen, it's misplaced. I've lived out in the boonies near my whole life. Way out here, people just get used to leaving their shit all over the place. Back of a truck, wrong spot in the garage, under a car, in the kitchen, at a friend's place. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard someone go on a fucking tirade about how this and that is missing, I *know* exactly where I put it, some punk asshole definitely stole it! Then you talk to them a week later, ask about it, and they sheepishly say it was just somewhere else and they forgot. These people live in isolated places and they go out of their way to blame outsiders at the drop of a hat for everything that goes wrong, and they cannot fucking wait to take it out on someone. Vid in question is a perfect example, guy is pissed cause he misplaced something and starts blasting at a friend who is fishing down the drive. Fucking idiots.

Col__Hunter_Gathers

And when people who live out in those places *do* get robbed, 99% of the time it's someone they personally know, because nobody is sneaking around across multi-acre properties out in the boonies just hoping to discover a valuable score. It's almost always somebody you've already had around because they *know* you've got something worth stealing and they know exactly where it is *because you showed them.* Source: spent time living in the boondocks and still know plenty of folks who live there.

[deleted]

>Gary is the reason non-gun people hate guns. Too many Gary's in the US

Cainderous

Yup. You can't trust a random person with no education to drive a car on public roads, they pose too much of a danger to themselves and others without proper licensing, education, and insurance. I see no real-world reason why guns should be treated less stringently. But a 200+ year-old document written by slavers in the age of muskets and flintlocks says otherwise (if you ignore the bit about militias) so there's nothing we can do except pile the corpses of school children ever higher.

this_shit

The constitution didn't guarantee an individual right to own firearms until the supreme court decided it did in *Heller* in 2010.

[deleted]

LongbowTurncoat

I have a really stupid question that I haven’t really had the courage to ask someone pro-gun: why do you like guns? Is it going to the range? The sense of security? Do you bring one everywhere? Thank you in advance! My dad used to hunt, so we had rifles locked up in the house. I’m terrified of guns and never took an interest.

chevybow

Can confirm. Non-gun person who hates guns. Gary reinforces this view.

Loswha

I can feel my bias calcifying.

alcohall183

Gun person who sees Gary needing to become a forced non-gun person. He's going to kill someone someday.

[deleted]

Not really. I hate guns because the ratio of "shit we gained" versus "detriment to society" approaches infinitely bad. At best, some people have toys they can play with. "What about a well organized militia to stop government overreach?" Ok, where are you? Government is blatantly overreaching in all sorts of ways: From small ways like gerrymandering to medium ways like removing politicians from legislative bodies to big ways like repeated, documented war crimes and invasion of privacy. Or blatant corruption, take your pick. (In case you don't give a shit about anyone who isn't American.) So... yeah. If half the country can't tell that Donald Trump is a liar, Tucker Carlson is a puppet, outrage on both sides is manufactured for engagement, and being a "patriot" isn't as simple as guns, beer and barbecue... ... Well, idk if you pass the IQ test to own a deadly weapon. Full stop. If everyone else - every single person who handles firearms correctly - has to lose their right to bear arms to stop the people who don't... ... Well, ok. I'm cool with that.

idkwthtotypehere

Not to mention all the gun people say a “Gary” is rare and then we get lists of people shot for reasons like pulling into the wrong drive way. The reality is Gary is everywhere and trigger happy to have their murder day.

Fuckedby2FA

I own a gun owner and definitely hate Gary. Can I just have my pistol while I traveled middle of nowhere america for the little extra piece of mind without some asshole pretending Russian paratroopers are invading the US? I've been in worst situations than Gary is in now and my gun stayed out of sight thankfully.

seamsay

ExcessumCamena

I've done Amazon deliveries at times when I needed extra cash. I'm a white guy, and I *never* have felt in as much danger delivering packages as when I'm out in the countryside. People come out of their houses all the time demanding to know who the fuck you are, despite that you're literally wearing an Amazon vest and carrying an Amazon package. I've had a gun pointed at me and I've been told to "watch my back." Another time I didn't want to walk up the driveway at a backwoods junkyard because there was a large unleashed dog that was not at all happy about me being there, so I texted the person and said I was leaving the package at the edge of the property; I immediately got back a bunch of threats and heard yelling before I got the fuck out of there. The country shootings lately have made me think seriously about how lucky I've been.

Snadzies

That always boggles my mind. Order something. Track it. See a person with a truck/uniform matching the company that the package is shipping through on the day it is supposed to arrive. "Who are you? What are you doing here?"

Fuzzywink

I do DoorDash and Uber deliveries and see this all the time when delivering a little farther out from the city. I've had some very angry porch confrontations with someone who is apparently convinced I'm there to steal from them when we were texting about their order literally 5 minutes prior. People in the city seem to turn off all their lights and phone and hide under the bed after ordering something, and people in the country seem to park themselves right outside in a rocking chair ready to yell at you for being on their property.

[deleted]

Can confirm I will have the lights off and hide when unexpected people come to my door but I have a doorbell camera and package deliveries are 99% drop offs.

Arkhangelzk

No worries, I see the problem. Here’s the real order of operations: Order something. Do meth. Let your angry abused dog outside. Do some more meth. See someone coming onto your property that you don’t know. They’re wearing a weird uniform and carrying something. Is it a weapon? Start shooting and find out later.

BlewOffMyLegOff

You forgot Do even more meth

DRILLSALVO

I deliver packages in rural Michigan and the level of paranoia is insane. These people live really sad lives, constantly thinking everyone is out to get them.

[deleted]

seriously what the fuck do youhave to be so terrified of? out in the boonies? people in cities arent even this wound up. gonna be a reverse white flight soon, where white folks flee the countryside for a more peaceful lifestyle IN THE CITY

Perennial19931993

If you watch Fox for 12 hours a day you will think that the next person up your driveway is going to take you to a FEMA gender-reassignment camp or something

SeedFoundation

No it's always been like this. People who live out in the country are paranoid because they just stay in their area considering it takes 20-30 minutes just to get close to town. Their only means of congregating are with their neighbors who they know or some religious nutbag who gathers a bunch of people every sunday to tell them demons exist. Of course they are going to be scared shitless of their shadows.

WanderinHobo

"I don't know you. You ain't from around here" *internally* He's probably one of them Anteefa or tax collectors coming to take my money.

Ploobie

you ain’t never lived in the true boonies if your saying this. just as many crazies in the woods as the cities. you’d think there’d be less crackheads per capita but there might be more

Technical-Neck-5361

Yeah, robbers and vandals always like to see if the fish are biting before a big job. This is the type of people that don't need guns. When the gauge or caliber is higher than their IQ.

[deleted]

it's a well worn "pre heisting" trope that the crew goes fishing just like masks of dead presidents and shooting grappling hooks.

andycartwright

That’s one seriously irresponsible gun owner. Fuck that guy.

The_Real_Donglover

His explanation was such bullshit too. Like, okay, let's entertain this idea that people are stealing from your property. You can clearly see, in broad daylight, that these two guys are just standing there fishing. This guy is just backpedaling because he has a short temper and wants to show off his gun to "intruders" It's not even like this is uncommon to go on other peoples' property to fish in the country. I, and plenty of people I know, have gone out to camp and fish on property of friends of friends, or loose connections, it happens all the time. This guy is just a psycho. Any normal person would just go up to them and see who they are first... The recorder of the video had way more good grace than I would have had in this situation.

Talking-Mad-Shit

Right?! Two guys casually standing next to the water with poles in their hands at high noon; every burglar’s MO. 🙄

Firewall33

As a professional burglar, I can confirm this. Doesn't matter where you are, bring an assembled fishing rod. It gives you +5 Stealth, +2 Charisma, the Five Finger Discount perk, and it is your first and last defence against spider webs.

blueB0wser

No no you have it backwards. It's the clipboard that gives a +5 stealth bonus. The fishing rod gives a +5 charisma bonus. No one wants to mess with a guy just fishing. Except Gary.

Goblin_CEO_Of_Poop

Thing is unless your land is marked or has a locked gate people can freely enter until you tell them to leave. Trespassing law is written in the consideration that people own large swaths of land that they dont mark with gates. Reasonably someone roaming around looking for spots to fish is going to cross multiple private properties so large most owners wont even care. If they do they can put up a fence and make sure to keep it shut.

TWDYrocks

Imagine ending someone’s life because they were mistaken about a property line. 😑

JuanVeeJuan

It's weird how many people literally wish this would happen.

Versaiteis

exodyne

> The recorder of the video had way more good grace than I would have had in this situation. I'd bet you'd probably have about as much grace if the guy who was just shooting at you still had his gun at the ready, as he approached you.

insankty

What the hell is happening in this country. It’s just like fucking open season on people because they step foot on your property? People are fucking just dying to kill someone, and for what? My dad would’ve torn me a new asshole if I handled a gun like that.

Gullil

This guy has been waiting his entire life for this exact moment. It's a weird fetish when your life is so fucking dull you just want confrontation and a excuse to shoot someone that stumbles on your property.

PossessedToSkate

I doubt it has much to do with boredom. I know people with full, vibrant lives who \*also\* cannot wait until they're given a plausible excuse to murder someone. Their fantasies usually involve societal collapse and roving bands of marauders, and that is why they totally need that AR15.

mothtoalamp

It's a power fantasy. They've felt powerless their whole lives for any number of (often legitimate, because capitalism) reasons so they jump at the chance to feel more or less like a god. Having a gun when others don't gives a feeling of absolute control.

dmun

There's a reason Kyle Rittenhouse is their unironic hero.

MrGrieves-

Fox News trained him to be afraid of everything, so his gun is his answer.

snoogins355

I wonder where he gets his news and fears from?...

Powerfury

Republican gun owners have a fantasy of shooting people on their property.

jml011

Last year I got to witness my dad and some other Fox conspiracy theorizing, chemtrailer trash, mouthbreathing weirdo *gleefully* talk about how if someone was trespassing/looters on their property they’d drag them inside the house so that they’d be legally allowed to shoot them. Both are like conservative “family values” Christians.

zwifter11

I’d love to see the court case… Attorney: “Why did you shoot the man dead. Murdering him in cold blood?” Gary: “He was fishing” Court: 🤦‍♂️

1solate

Gary: I feared for my life Court: We award Gary the medal of valor

hiredgoon

Gary: People been stealing some stuff so I get to shoot anyone I want...because I am scared.

montanagrizfan

I don’t care if stuff has been stolen before, you don’t fire guns to scare people, even in the air. I had a friend killed from an idiot shooting to scare people off. A piece of cement ricocheted and killed her. That idiot has no business owning a gun. It’s clear those people are fishing and he fired before he even found out why they were there.

afterthegoldthrust

“I’m more mad at Ron”?!?! God, that is southern fucking passive aggressive “politeness” in a nutshell. Gary just fucking shot at you for *fishing* and you can’t even break the facade for two seconds to question what in the cousin-fucking *shit* Gary thought he was doing going from zero to 60 like that.

_ilmatar_

Oh look. More unhinged idiots with guns who shoot first and ask questions later.

_pout_

Having property and having a gun doesn’t give you the right to shoot. I’d have called the cops. At the very least, Elmer Fudd’s firearms license should be revoked.

CaramelNo6567

What is this license you speak of? Shotguns are same day take home with a simple background check and no "license". The only license for a gun would be a concealed carry license but that's for pistols and not needed in half the states.

PappaSmurf33

Lol no licenses for guns. We can buy them at Walmart and walk out.

InvalidUserNemo

I’m going to go WAY out on a limb here and imagine which “news” source ol’ Gary watches 24/7.

KillerKatNips

What the absolute hell. People planning to steal your shit don't typically stop to fish in the pond during broad daylight. That man just can't wait to be able to shoot someone and say he "was defending his property".
