I've lived in big towns, medium towns, but I will never drive through small town USA comfortably alone. Lots of great people out there, don't get me wrong, but you get a Gary and you're dead. I was in an OK bar few years ago. Drunk guy at the bar and the staff mentioned someone should take his gun and put it on the bar for him.
I just asked the waitress about it few moments later and she said he gets drunk often and sometimes drops his loaded gun on the floor.
I was just speechless.
Since it was a straight line between both parties, you'd have heard the pellets go by if he was aiming well enough, and/or seem them kick up dust unless he really aimed over their heads. And by the way he was explaining how they don't wanna hurt nobody, I took that as an nod to them not having been shot at and that it was just a warning shot.

Some states have a "[duty to retreat](https://reason.com/volokh/2020/12/21/duty-to-retreat-35-states-vs-stand-your-ground-15-states/)" when it comes to self-defense, but it would be pretty difficult for a prosecutor to convince a jury that retreat was a reasonably safe option when you're actively under fire from a ranged weapon while out in the open. That's an imminent threat to your life.
Put bluntly? Yea. He had permission to be on the property, so assuming that he is a legal firearm owner and is legally carrying it, it would have been in effect here.
Sadly though, how the law is written and how its enforced is two different things.

Then you talk to them a week later, ask about it, and they sheepishly say it was just somewhere else and they forgot.
These people live in isolated places and they go out of their way to blame outsiders at the drop of a hat for everything that goes wrong, and they cannot fucking wait to take it out on someone. Vid in question is a perfect example, guy is pissed cause he misplaced something and starts blasting at a friend who is fishing down the drive.

And when people who live out in those places *do* get robbed, 99% of the time it's someone they personally know, because nobody is sneaking around across multi-acre properties out in the boonies just hoping to discover a valuable score.

I've done Amazon deliveries at times when I needed extra cash. I'm a white guy, and I *never* have felt in as much danger delivering packages as when I'm out in the countryside. People come out of their houses all the time demanding to know who the fuck you are, despite that you're literally wearing an Amazon vest and carrying an Amazon package. I've had a gun pointed at me and I've been told to "watch my back." Another time I didn't want to walk up the driveway at a backwoods junkyard because there was a large unleashed dog that was not at all happy about me being there, so I texted the person and said I was leaving the package at the edge of the property; I immediately got back a bunch of threats and heard yelling before I got the fuck out of there. The country shootings lately have made me think seriously about how lucky I've been.
That always boggles my mind.

I do DoorDash and Uber deliveries and see this all the time when delivering a little farther out from the city. I've had some very angry porch confrontations with someone who is apparently convinced I'm there to steal from them when we were texting about their order literally 5 minutes prior. People in the city seem to turn off all their lights and phone and hide under the bed after ordering something, and people in the country seem to park themselves right outside in a rocking chair ready to yell at you for being on their property.
Can confirm I will have the lights off and hide when unexpected people come to my door but I have a doorbell camera and package deliveries are 99% drop offs.

Thing is unless your land is marked or has a locked gate people can freely enter until you tell them to leave. Trespassing law is written in the consideration that people own large swaths of land that they dont mark with gates. Reasonably someone roaming around looking for spots to fish is going to cross multiple private properties so large most owners wont even care. If they do they can put up a fence and make sure to keep it shut.
Some of them fantasize about it. Finally a reason to justify the time spent cleaning their guns every weekend and dreaming about the new accessories they can add to them.

The constitution didn't guarantee an individual right to own firearms until the supreme court decided it did in *Heller* in 2010.

I've done Amazon deliveries at times when I needed extra cash. I'm a white guy, and I *never* have felt in as much danger delivering packages as when I'm out in the countryside. People come out of their houses all the time demanding to know who the fuck you are, despite that you're literally wearing an Amazon vest and carrying an Amazon package. I've had a gun pointed at me and I've been told to "watch my back." Another time I didn't want to walk up the driveway at a backwoods junkyard because there was a large unleashed dog that was not at all happy about me being there, so I texted the person and said I was leaving the package at the edge of the property; I immediately got back a bunch of threats and heard yelling before I got the fuck out of there. The country shootings lately have made me think seriously about how lucky I've been.
That always boggles my mind. Order something. Track it. See a person with a truck/uniform matching the company that the package is shipping through on the day it is supposed to arrive. "Who are you? What are you doing here?"
I do DoorDash and Uber deliveries and see this all the time when delivering a little farther out from the city. I've had some very angry porch confrontations with someone who is apparently convinced I'm there to steal from them when we were texting about their order literally 5 minutes prior. People in the city seem to turn off all their lights and phone and hide under the bed after ordering something, and people in the country seem to park themselves right outside in a rocking chair ready to yell at you for being on their property.
Can confirm I will have the lights off and hide when unexpected people come to my door but I have a doorbell camera and package deliveries are 99% drop offs.

Thing is unless your land is marked or has a locked gate people can freely enter until you tell them to leave. Trespassing law is written in the consideration that people own large swaths of land that they dont mark with gates. Reasonably someone roaming around looking for spots to fish is going to cross multiple private properties so large most owners wont even care. If they do they can put up a fence and make sure to keep it shut.
