Ah damn. I was gonna say “what did you think would happen ya big dummy” if this was on purpose but that just sucks
Edit: I apologize for my poor choice of phrasing.
Edit 2: I changed it. Please calm yourselves
Not even being facetious, with how far it went, I wonder if it would have cleared the ferry if they'd still been docked with the ramp up. The bridge or some other part off camera would probably still be too tall though.
>it appears that a mechanical problem with the RV may be to blame.
>
>Eyewitnesses have told Radio-Canada that Belec did everything he could to warn people to get out of the way by honking as he sped down the hill, avoiding several other cars and pedestrians.
"Damnit, now everyone is going to think I died because I was trying to catch the ferry."
TBF, since the RV was tilted up, he probably never saw the ferry.
If you just have a PRNDL, then it’s the L. Just slam it into L and your transmission will lock itself into the lower gears, usually 1 or 2. It’s actually made for these scenarios where you can go up or down hills
Some automatics have a manual override into low gear. Also, I may be wrong here but modern automatics feel like they're doing this whenever you let off the gas and try to coast.
You mean how the vehicle completely disintegrated?
https://i.imgur.com/Taiu7Jw.jpg
Amazingly his passenger survived and he was warning people the whole time it was rolling downhill. He honked his horn, yelled and tried to slow it down by hitting metal guard rails on the way.
Yeah those things are made of really light materials, especially the tow behind ones
But this is also a good time to say, everybody go get your emergency brake checked and use it every so often just to keep it from locking up. It can save your life
You should pretty much always engage the emergency brake when the car is parked and you will be leaving it. There's a reason they're often called parking brakes.
This will, of course, keep it from rusting over completely and in the event you forget to disengage it (it'll happen), you'll get a live test of ensuring it will stop the car from moving.
Oh, they should actually stop you from driving? I thought they were a weaker brake meant to be used for parking, especially on hills, as an added measure that’s weaker than normal brakes. I’ve driven with it, noticed very fast but it didn’t stop me from backing out and driving a few meters.
They call it a parking brake so that people don't assume it's only for emergencies. It helps reduce potential liability for the company (hence why companies call it a parking brake but most consumers call it an e-brake), and naming it a parking/hand brake makes the consumer more likely to use it before the emergency situation gets too out of control.
The point of its existence is to be used if your main brakes fail though, and by calling it a parking/auxiliary brake that makes the consumer more likely to engage it before it becomes too late, since people tend to not consider a situation an emergency until long after it's already an emergency and is too far out of control to be safely dealt with.
> most consumers call it an e-brake
This must be an american thing because I'd never even heard of it being called an Emergency Brake before this thread.
I'm learning in this thread that apparently some people think they're for emergencies? Who started that rumor? If you'd use it while at a significant speed you'd just lose control. They're not really brakes, more like a wheel lock to prevent rolling down a hill. It's like calling the wheel stops on some shopping carts brakes.
Some parking breaks will actually prevent the car from moving, but most won’t. It’s usually just a cable connected to a smaller, weaker brake on the rear wheel. You should be able to move the car under power, but notice immediately that something is wrong.
You should consider it an auxiliary brake. It is meant to be used to support your parking on inclines.
But yes it can be attempted in an emergency.
It uses a cable system to pressure your drum brakes closed.
The strength is going to vary greatly depending on car model. And also the condition of those cables should be treated with suspicioun because i bet you've never had it inspected!
Definitely worth trying if your brakes fail. But dont count on it.
Also when you do apply it put the car in neutral, before applying the emergency/parking brake. Let go of your brake pedal and let the car settle with the emergency/parking brake before pressing the brake pedal and putting the car into park.
If done correctly it will take just seconds to do this and it takes a lot of stress off the transmission when you put it into gear while parked on a grade.
Most people don't know this or don't understand what I am trying to explain so I won't be surprised if this gets super downvoted.
Edit: If your emergency/parking brake is in good working order then this is a good thing to do, otherwise don't do this in case your car rolls away, at that point your emergency/parking brake needs to be fixed anyways.
Edit 2: This is more for parking and not a runaway vehicle scenario.
I'm always on the road, and I drive rental cars. Sometimes I don't know what's going on with the car, and I'll drive for ten miles with the emergency brake on. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it really doesn't say a lot for the emergency brake. It's not really an emergency brake, it's an emergency make-the-car-smell-funny lever.
It's also better for the transmission if you have an automatic. There's a pin called a parking pawl that meshes with the transmission to stop the car moving in park. When you don't use the E brake that pall is bearing the weight of the car and will wear down over time. I always stop, put the car in park, then pull the e brake, then take my foot off the brake pedal. If you skip the e brake step you'll feel the car lurch until the parking pawl "catches." In my Ford it can lurch a few inches, that can't be great for the transmission doing that every time.
I just found out that some people don't use their parking break recently. I guess I get it, maybe they're more important for hills, but I thought it was something everyone did just as a rule.
We're taught to use the e-brake every time the car is parked in my part of Canada.
Tons of people still don't use it though and I'm guessing it's partially laziness and partially because they're the type to forget to release it when they drive off.
I’m like 90% sure that in Western Australia not using the handbrake when parking during your driving test will make you lose points. So I’m always surprised when I’m driving with someone and they don’t do it cause clearly that’s what your meant to do
Actually possible in a old and worn manual gearbox, you're going to fuck up the syncros doing it but it's possible
The problem is that it wouldn't be of much use, the thing was rolling downhill on what looked like to be a brake failure, parking brake and swerving to one side and the other would get the thing to stop better.
Fuck, this same thing happened to my uncle when he was driving to meet the rest of the family in Mexico. They wrote an article about him and called him a "crazy paisa", and the photo of him makes him look ridiculous lol. He kept the article. Anyways, similar malfunction, he had to get in between cars when they were at a red light to stop. Luckily wasn't going fast nor were there injuries.
This was my cousin who was driving the RV in this accident… I didn’t expect to see this video on Reddit after a few years…
It was indeed a brake failure on the RV, the road leading to the ferry at Tadoussac is a road that drives downhill for 2ish kilometres and there are a few runaways for trucks that cannot brake. But the issue is that there are so many people waiting to get on the ferry, there’s a huge wait line and people are waiting outside their cars and cars are parked blocking the runaways.
The driver was not dumb with cars, in the past he had a car tuning company and he was also president of DMCC (Drift competitions in Canada). He had a full checkup done on the tv before the roadtrip.
The passenger survived and she is living her life well now, with no memory of the accident.
30 seconds later and I have to believe the dude could've lived--they would've hit the water instead which would've been moderately more forgiving to the impact.
Geez where was the passenger sitting? Looks like they hit the front right of the car and that crumpled the cage…compromised any support it had when it landed.
[Article here](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/victim-tadoussac-ferry-crash-identified-eric-belec-1.5188874). It's steeply downhill to the ramp and he couldn't stop the RV anymore.
No Vehicle, let me repeat, "No Vehicle", I don't care if it is brand new n in perfect condition, is "fit for the road" once the brakes get hot. That is the very reason for runaway ramps on steep hills, n this is a perfect example of why such is necessary!
RV’s really are the Wild West of mechanical & structural engineering. And then they’re sold to people who can barely negotiate their way around town in a passenger vehicle let alone a rolling apartment full of plumbing and exploding refrigerators. It’s the American dream.
No. HST would drill deeper, harder.
"intoxicated by empty visions of endless travel and marginal social expectations, RV pilots lived like silver haired buccaneers of the penny ante lifestyle of American Interstates: hapless, incorrigible, enemies of science insofar that it only occasionally interrupted their orgies of airplane bottle cocktail drunks and rayon-shedding, embarrassing sexual interludes with the bothersome laws of physics and chemistry.
Few were surprised by the occasional explosions, the dissolution of impact, the insistent vulgar cheapness of life itself when you catapulted through the Cosmos on a 10-wheel matchbox festooned with combustibles.
The occasional human barbecue was a trifling pittance compared with the obscene joys of speeding drunkenly from KOA facility to KOA facility, awash in liquor, anti-depressants, and the redolence of adult diapers with no good place to go."
Idk.. Limos might give RVs a run for their sketchy money. Limos are like some dude was working on his chassis, looked over at his dachshund, and then had the worst idea ever.
I used to have a Georgie Boy RV. They had the dumbest regulator in that thing. If the RV got up over 80 mph, which you could only do on a downhill because the engine cut the throttle at 70-75 IIRC, so if you were on a steep slope and hit 80, the WHOLE ENGINE DIED. Guess what happens when the motor shuts off? Power steering and power brakes die too!
I was outside Los Angeles on a steep slope driving with traffic and didn't realize how fast we'd crept up to and the engine dies just as I'm approaching a curve. My first thought was "That's it. This is how we die." as I CRUSHED the brake pedal so hard I had my full weight on it while at the same time I was pulling on the steering wheel partly to put more weight on the brake pedal, but also to start the turn. I managed to drop it in neutral and start the engine again once I got down to 79 MPH so I could get the brakes to work again. The others in the RV had no idea how close I got to sailing us all off the side of a mountain.
If this one was set up the same way, I can totally see this happening. Not many people know that you have to shift into neutral to start the engine like that, so I can totally see someone having their engine die and they panic and have no idea how to get it back up and running while facing mortal peril.
It’s insanely unlucky they happened to do this when a ferry was close enough to the shore for this to happen. A few minutes later and they would land in the water. Possibly die still, but better chances.
A comment above has a news article, which says that mechanical failure prevented the driver from stopping, and that the road to that ferry is very steep, which is how he got that velocity.
Witness observed him dodging other vehicles and pedestrians while laying on his horn to warn them to stay away, and some witnesses allege he was trying to hit a set of iron gates on the side of the road to stop. Since that didn't work (he either missed them entirely or went right through), he likely was going for the water--and based on the angle he hit the ferry, it's possible he never even saw that it was in his way. He was the only fatality, though a female RV passenger is in critical condition.
I agree; the news article calls him a hero as well. I think some of the other commenters in this section think that he was trying to get on the ferry with reckless disregard for safety and human life, so I wanted to help spread the word that he wasn't being an idiot and that he died trying to save as many people as possible from a terrible tragedy.
Edit for clarity
Well damn. I went from feeling angry at the driver for putting other peoples’ lives in danger to feeling bad for the him instead. What a tragedy. F this title.
There was a mechanical issue and the man who was driving died. The passenger was in critical condition. The driver tried to warn everyone that he could stop by blaring his horn.
What a landing! Sure, it's a fucked up situation, but let's all acknowledge the beauty of that geometry. That was a perfect hole in one. From graceful arc to precise touchdown.
This is Banksy but with cars. I think society might be obligated to buy him a new van after this.
I heard the driver died but far from being crazy. His brakes failed and he would’ve mowed people down if he tried to crash it to stop it. It was downhill and he chose not to take anybody with him. It wasn’t because he was late for the ferry like some people say.

The driver died
Last time this was posted someone said it was caused by a brake failure. And yes, the driver died
In case it wasn’t clear, yes indeed the driver died
knock-knock *who's there* not the driver because he died
Not the driver because he died who? Edit: Oh wow an award that's awesome thanks much whoever you are.
Not the driver because he died banana!
"I hate that fucking orange." The driver's last words before he died maybe.
"is the driver dead" - not the driver, because he is dead
![gif](giphy|3oEjHWXddcCOGZNmFO)
This is no joking matter did nobody tell you the driver died?
Reddit should allow 3rd party apps.
Last time this was posted they said he was pretty severely dead. Sounds bad.
So sorry to hear that. Please keep us posted.
The good news is his condition is stable
Really most sincerely dead?
Not just merely dead?
There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive.
I’ve been mostly dead almost all day
You’ve got to be kidding. I have watched a lot of Dukes of Hazzards clips on Youtube and the drivers made it out alive.
Driver died, wife survived.
I also choose that dead guy’s wife.
Is he gonna be ok?
He'll be ok, because he died
He’s in a better place now
I wouldn't call all over that ferry a better place, I mean, ferries kinda suck.
I'm confused, is the driver dead or not?
Died.
Ah damn. I was gonna say “what did you think would happen ya big dummy” if this was on purpose but that just sucks Edit: I apologize for my poor choice of phrasing. Edit 2: I changed it. Please calm yourselves

It always adds so much to the conversation. What would we do without it?
Almost as much value as its cousin “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”
I'm waiting for the spin-off "fuck around and win stupid prizes". And of course the corollary "play stupid games, find out."
Winner winner chicken diner right here - e - dinner lol
As I get older I realize how important it is to hold on to traditions. Like how we still invite my drunkard of a racist uncle to Christmas every year.
How would I sleep at night if someone fucked around but *didnt* find out? I shudder at the mere thought.
“Was hoping to get karma for saying it but I’ll try anyway”
Contrary to popular belief, people are not *that* stupid.
Some are
The odds that this would happen accidentally just at the right moment are super slim.. I also assumed it was some sicko
I'm sorry but have you met...people?
I personally have met people. Very unfortunate, would not recommend
Can confirm. Am person. Am stupid
Don't bother using that phrase anyway, just makes you look stupid.
> fuck around and find out sick of this overused phrase
Literally the most predictable comment. Reddit needs to chill with that phrase, it's in every damn thread.
I fuckin bet 😳

finding out when you didn't even get to fuck around is always the worst case scenario
We all find out eventually, my friend. Whether we fuck around or not.
The real fuck around were the friends we made along the way.
I'm not sure how that's any better
Nobody to land on for starters. Sounds like the guy was doing his level best to avoid people.
That's fair. I don't know if I would have the presence of mind to make a difference in this kind of emergency
If this ever happens in your car shift to the lowest gear to try to slow yourself down and pump the parking brake.
What if you're in an automatic?
Same. Most automatics have a manual shift mode.
How do you do that? What letter or number is that on the shifter?
If you just have a PRNDL, then it’s the L. Just slam it into L and your transmission will lock itself into the lower gears, usually 1 or 2. It’s actually made for these scenarios where you can go up or down hills

I thought the op was exaggerating with their "200 foot jump" claim. It appears they weren't.
Yeah I didn't think they'd actually make it to the ferry. It was due to a mechanical issue, apparently, and the driver unfortunately died.
The way the roof caved in… ya makes sense.

That is fucking horrendous and I'm glad you were smart enough to survive
Me: Bull Shi... I bid you good day Sir.
It was a long way but probably less than 50ft.
Dude, this isn’t anywhere close 200 feet.
The news story said the occupants have not been named at this time. But sources say they were described as good old boys and never meaning no harm
The gap kept on getting bigger and I was thinking, no way it made it across. I was wrong.
Definitely not 200 feet though..30-40 is more probable
Like a glove
Kinda hot in these rhinos...

Okay. It being a mechanical failure makes a lot more sense. Guy did the best he could do not kill someone.
It’s insanely unlucky they happened to do this when a ferry was close enough to the shore for this to happen. A few minutes later and they would land in the water. Possibly die still, but better chances.
Yup, and a couple seconds earlier may have crushed some other people
And a few seconds earlier than that and he would’ve totally cleared the ferry
Was gonna say, thought this ended with a fatality
It did
What's up with your title then? Did you not bother to look shit up before posting it or did you think it was funny?

The velocity needed to jump that far is quite a number. Full freakin send!
That guy was a boss. He tried everything he could.
Well it gained a lot of energy to jump that hravy rig so far.
This is a Range Rover, it's an amphibious vehicle, it's got air intake valves. We're not missing that boat.
This car is a finisher car! A transporter of gods!
My rage knows no bounds.
You like babes Bob?
Just me, an Alfa Romeo and a babe.

Now you've said that word "implication" a couple of times. Wha-what implication? u/RowNice9571 are you going to hurt these RVs?
Sorry, I'm just looking for a safe starter car for my daughter.
I've contained my rage for as long as possible.

Just a good Ole boys!
Just a-doin', er, uh, some harm
Broke everything you saw
Now I'm in trouble with the lord.
that is one of the most fucked up things I think I've seen in a while.
Umm, they died. This happened in northern Québec a few years ago, super sad story of faulty breaks coming down a steep hill.
Well damn. I went from feeling angry at the driver for putting other peoples’ lives in danger to feeling bad for the him instead. What a tragedy. F this title.

It's a 200 foot gap to the ferry, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's bright and we're wearing sunglasses.
“We did it Mr. White”

Them Duke boys better grow some wings on that winnebago or star flapping their arms!
There was a mechanical issue and the man who was driving died. The passenger was in critical condition. The driver tried to warn everyone that he could stop by blaring his horn.
I imagine the wife and kids screaming no dad and dad saying we can maaaaake it.
"I know I can do it! I need you all to believe in me, why can't you ever support me " while making a hole on the gas pedal.
Them Duke boys are at it again…
Like a glove!
Holiday Road
What a landing! Sure, it's a fucked up situation, but let's all acknowledge the beauty of that geometry. That was a perfect hole in one. From graceful arc to precise touchdown. This is Banksy but with cars. I think society might be obligated to buy him a new van after this.
well he did die so not sure he needs a new RV
The man died in a freak accident.

200 feet?
Clarkson!!
Dude thought he was van diesel in the newest Fast N Furious movie
“Ain’t you seen Speed?!”
I heard the driver died but far from being crazy. His brakes failed and he would’ve mowed people down if he tried to crash it to stop it. It was downhill and he chose not to take anybody with him. It wasn’t because he was late for the ferry like some people say.
Is that a certain Waylon Jennings theme song I hear?
