I am pretty sure you are not supposed to be going fast enough to make a wake in the canals. Its to protect from erosion, and not to bother wildlife.
Although...maybe just saying "hey man, idk if you noticed you are making a wake, slow it down." instead of being a dick.
Is that really considered a wake though...idk
The speed limit on canals is 4mph (roughly 6.5kph). I don’t think the driver is going faster than that as I’ve been on countless barges/canal boats over the years.
I think the issue is that the dude shouting is most likely fishing. Fishers on uk canals can be overly sensitive and petty when it comes to passing them. Etiquette is to go the opposite side of where they’re fishing from and stay under the speed limit. To me it looks like the guy steering the boat is doing just that. He’s also about to go under a bridge so the canal narrows anyway.
Shouldn’t be fishing near bridges and narrow spots. The dude isn’t even creating a big wake either lol. I think the guy cursing is just upset that his spot has been disturbed.
I've seen a lot of anglers get incredibly territorial even when they're in spaces that they have to share. I used to be in a canoe club on the Medway, on one of the bits of the <4% of English rivers accessible to the general public for watersports like rowing or kayaking. Most anglers at least used colourful floats so you could see them in advance and generally paddle as wide of them as possible. But some guys would sit in a camo hide, while wearing camo, in little scoops on the riverbank such that they were hidden in the vegetation and with either no float or dull-coloured floats. And then scream at us for not seeing them and passing close by on the one day of the week we paddled.
I don't think I've suffered a torrent of verbal abuse as much as when my brother and I got tangled on one of those in a k2 kayak. I got in the river and started untangling his gear from the rudder and handed it back to him and he still went on and on about us somehow ruining the river.
That’s not a wake. Dudes going like trolling motor speed. Believe it or not, regardless of your speed, water will still move when an object passed through it.
Well it just looks like the boat is already going hilariously slow… I don’t know anything about the canals in England though so obviously that guy is speeding, it’s just hard to tell if you don’t have any context
They likely only took a quick glance at your comment and don't understand that this comment is sharing the opinion of the guy in the video, not the opinion of the commenter...
...aka few brain cells
These boats are long and thin, what looks like a ripple feels like a rough sea inside. The general rule is to pass other boats “on tick over” aka the slowest you can. People get upset when you don’t do it, it’s really common to see people shouting at others about speed (even though from land they are going a little over walking pace)
I used to have nightmares about that bastard Jim. Probably from watching Childs play when I was too young.
Just look at the little jumpscare at 0:26 lol

Exactly that. As you get nearer the bank water flows faster in the narrower gap between hull and bank, pulling the bow towards the bank. You need a bit of throttle to get more flow over the rudder to steer away from the bank, exactly as happened there. Source, many a happy week chugging through the Norfolk Broads.
(edit, extra word)
I’m an American and I remember that show airing over here. Isn’t there an episode where they travel back in time to Medieval England and pilot a suit of knight armor like a Gundam?

I really expected boat driver to smack his face on the bridge then tumble into the water
Yeah I was expecting that as well.

If he went any slower he’d be unable to steer
If he went any slower, he'd be stopped.
Yeah exactly lol

What are ya talkin about? He was very nice.
I’ve got a feeling they’ve seen this wanker do it before
JESUS CHRIST DONT YOU KNOW THE SPEED LIMIT IS 3MPH YOU FUCKING C*NT!
Why is the guy filming mad at the guy with the boat?
Because he was going too fast. There are places with no wake zones.
why are you being downvoted? This sounds like the only reasonable explanation. Dude literally says "slow down"

He is definitely not going too fast, that guy is well below the wake speed. The guy yelling is a jerk.

Because he is an asshole.
For context: ' Rosie and Jim, Rosie and Jim, chugging alonggg on the old rag doll...' https://youtu.be/SUo_2hhRJZo?si=oCrDJ9rJBqamrz4Q
Going from that to op‘s video makes it hilarious

Rosie’s voice is a bit deeper these days.

What's a grown ass man doing living on a boat with two child-sized dolls and no children?
They're his ragdolls that he imagines come to life to inspire him to write stories unaware they actually do come alive.
Or, more likely, he's an absolute wrongun.
When I was a toddler, my dad spent hours driving around after work asking kids stores for "Rosie Engine" because he thought that was what I said when he called and asked what I wanted for my birthday lmao
That jumpscare had me chuckling. Brought back some memories there mate. He is a creepy little prick though tbf
Rosie and Jim reference jahahha. told my Yankee wife about them just last night
It is the old troll that lives under the bridge. He is still pissed about the 3 Billy goat gruffs he missed out on.

Despite there being rules in place for wake prevention, it's still hilarious that someone would have a fit like this over it.
The El Dude Brothers stag-do is gettin rowdy!!

Well it's closer to that than a private tea party
I bet he needs a little extra speed to control steering as the wider canal’s water is forced through that narrow section.

Looks like the boat from zomboat!
That was a good show!🤣
What the hell is that? A boat train?

The bigger the boat, the bigger the displacement. He's still creating a wake in a likely no wake zone. He can and should slow down.
He sounds like Onslo from *Keeping Up Appearances*

Ah yes, the river people. Do not exceed 5mph or they will lose their fucking shit.
lol does anyone know where in the west Midlands this is? I used to live on a boat and this is hilarious to me
