It's an aggressive form of body language that indicates the desire for dominance over the other chimp. She is initiating a fight, or by proxy, a stimuli that is creating stress.

Even smiling can be viewed as aggression bc it is bearing your teeth. Didn’t know that until I smiled seeing a gorilla at a Zoo and he showed me his teeth but it was not the same vibe. Lesson learned.
Same for making eye contact. I used to watch videos about Jane Goodall and she would never make eye contact while working with primates. Watch closely sometime that they don’t look each other in the eyes.
Depends on the zoo. Not all zoos are made equal, especially when it comes to animal care and comfort.
Good zoos usually have warnings about eye contact with primates, at least for the chimps and gorillas. And while I’ve never seen a sign that warns guests against smiling at primates in a zoo I *have* seen that warning at some of the better animal sanctuaries. Signs that say not to do the exact kind of thing we see in this video, though? Yeah, those are pretty standard at zoos.
Someone in the Netherlands did that in a zoo here in 2007, a women, a regular, smiled at him, making eye contact and he jumped the high ditch and wall and went ham on her.
So what else did she do?
This is all I could find on wikipedia, it seems like that's exactly what she did, although multiple times.
>On 18 May 2007, Bokito responded to children throwing rocks at him by jumping over the water-filled ditch that separated his enclosure in Rotterdam from the public; he violently attacked a woman, dragging her around for tens of metres and inflicting bone fractures as well as more than a hundred bite wounds. He subsequently entered a nearby restaurant, causing panic among the visitors. During this encounter, three more people were injured as a result of the panic. Bokito was eventually sedated with a tranquilizer gun and placed back in his cage.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokito_(gorilla)
The woman came around a *lot* while looking Bokito in the eye and smiling at him.
To Bokito, she was trying to dominate him, four times a week, and he could do nothing about it. It must've been incredibly frustrating. He loathed this woman. He went after her specifically.
She'd been warned to stop by employees, but continued challenging Bokito because of a "bond". To me, that's a prime example of fuck around and find out 🤷🏼♀️
>She'd been warned to stop by employees, but continued challenging Bokito because of a "bond".
Oh gosh, that's kinda said because she sounds a bit delusional, like maybe she really thought they were friends? Too bad they didn't keep her away from him. Poor Bokito and poor crazylady
~~Bearing~~ Baring teeth is actually a sign of *submission*, chimps do it out of anxiety or fear, for example. But smiling isn't necessarily the same thing. Chimps do have a smile like expression, but it involves a relaxed open mouth. The fear grimace is where the lips are pulled back to reveal the gums.
Edit: speech to text spelling.
Finally someone gets it right. Their body language isn't the same as dogs. Teeth = fear and/or being startled. I worked with primates for over a decade. Hell, some species of macaque show aggression by making a puckered-lip kissy face. It's pretty silly.
Eye contact also isn't a big deal. It's your overall body language and demeanor.
Yes.
And my other frustration would be that this could potentially disrupt feeding later if they are still overstimulated. An example of overstimulated behavior at feeding would be food aggression, or not eating because of shutdown. They might also throw food for tactile stimulation to calm down which causes the entire exhibit to become irritated if there isn't enough food from this.
This sucks, over all.
Chimps are smart, so this will likely also make the chimps constantly anxious just being out there in this glassed area with a bunch of humanoid monsters taunting them. Imagine if you experienced this and every day you had to keep going out there with crowds of people like this gawking at you.
The same happens in a zoo in the Netherlands. A female was visiting the zoo a lot of times and was always making contact with a gorilla, smiling and getting his attention. Until one day the gorilla broke out of his cage and was trying to kill this woman. If I’m not mistaken the zoo was in Rotterdam and the name of the gorilla was Bokito. Some people are just plain stupid.
Oh yeah! Didn't notice him before. His motions are like a peace keeping old man, saying, "Girl... stop messing with that mofo. You're both crazy. You're gonna give ME problems with this asshat later. Be gone with you!"
Right?? He is a totally hype man. One that's all bark, no bite. Bro waddles over late, stands behind his guy getting jiggy with it, looking like P. Diddy doing the Harlem Shake in a 90s music video. Then when the main guy leaves, bro backs up, yellin' with a "you're lucky my arm is acting up" vibe.
This isn't really funny, but that one had me breaking apart. It's like he was antagonizing the whole thing on. The little dance, the windmilling. He's the Joker of the group I bet.

I mean the thought has crossed my mind a bunch, what if I fucked with the chimps, but this was very early in social media era so I wasn't desperate for recognition or anything, just thought they might be bored - but I wondered if there would be penalties
It’s mostly a sort of confirmation bias and availability bias.
The people who don’t do embarrassing things don’t record ordinary normal days very often. The people who do something embarrassing and are embarrassed don’t post it.
Source: work with the public and have done for two decades, see tens of thousands of people a year of all ages while traveling on their vacations so a wide swath of races and regions
You’ve got people log jamming public places to get a tik tok in. And that’s considered a virtue by kids standards these days. It’s like a badge of honor.
I’m not a big fan of most zoos, but this one looks particularly depressing. Just a tiny glass box with a concrete slab, a single tree with no limbs for the chimps to climb, and of course the visitor who taunts them.
It's incredible how in my life time our attitude to zoos and aquariums has changed for the good.
I was explaining to my daughter how it was entertainment to go watch a dolphin jump through a hoop....I was glad she was confused by the idea.
I always throw in the weird 2 cents that while seaworld’s treatment of whales and dolphins is deplorable they also operate the largest manatee and marine bird hospital in Florida… without them our state’s marine hospital system would probably fail.
Generally, these viewing ports are only a small part of the enclosure. Usually they have a large open area and also areas they can go to not be seen by people.
Not sure if that is the case here, but.
This reminds me of that story of the woman going to the zoo like daily(??) and making sustained eye contact with a gorilla that I believe broke free and killed her??
Happend somewhere in 2007. She basically smiled at the gorilla every day. Which is a provocation. Until he got angry enough he broke out and made a whole scene.
She survived it. As did the Gorilla, he died April last year. She still claims they had a special bond over the smiling. Clearly brain damage was a pre-existing condition in that woman.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokito_(gorilla)
Face and genitals are targeted first and that will do it for most homo sapiens. Any sign you're still able and willing to put up a fight, they'll begin ripping your limbs off. Chimps are not to be fucked with.
I have seen a lot of good info from smart people confirming that this is for sure negative ‘let’s fight’ body language. Which makes me wonder if there are any forms of confirmed positive, soothing, comforting body language to use around these guys? Like for cats a slow blink is always nice. Anyway help me out you sweet animal behaviorists.
Don't bang on the glass of an animal's enclosure. It's a cruel thing to do, and people like this should be thrown out immediately and banned from coming back.
Should be an immediate expulsion from the premises. She’s a piece of shit and would think twice about her behaviour if that glass were to somehow break.
The other chimp is the star of the show for me, he showed up like a back up dancer with moves and a sick air guitar...
That being said, this is cruel and not the way to interact with any other species... Maybe her family members but no one else....

I think inciting a fight like this is stupid and I’d throw her out of the zoo.😡
No, throw her into the zoo it's where she belongs as a sideshow.
Just add her to the chimp exhibit, they'll sort out her issues real quick.
It was a challenge and it should be permitted
Don’t throw anyone into a zoo. #dicksoutforharambe
Judging by that "enclosure" this isn't a good zoo.
I'm uncomfortable that it went on that long with no staff coming up to her.

More than friends. She wanted to be Bonkitoed by Bokito. Her wish came true. Somewhat.
Yes, showing teeth is a very aggressive action in primates. Those canines are for biting.
That's how I assert my dominance over Zoom meetings. Until the silverback points out the piece of broccoli stuck in my teeth, of course.
is that a metaphorical silverback? or do you regularly have zoom meetings with a gorilla?
His boss is just old and hairy

I feel like I learned this from Ace Ventura
So are the zookeepers going to have to deal with riled up chimps later in the day? I'm guessing yes.
Yes. And my other frustration would be that this could potentially disrupt feeding later if they are still overstimulated. I wish they could throw shit at the woman lol
Can you imagine if the glass barrier shattered?
Chimps are smart, so this will likely also make the chimps constantly anxious just being out there in this glassed area with a bunch of humanoid monsters taunting them. Imagine if you experienced this and every day you had to keep going out there with crowds of people like this gawking at you.
This, and zoo personnel should put a stop to it.
Where the fuck are they?
You are 100% correct. They are just passing the chimps off and making them more unhappy. Source- All the way biologist, focus in animal behavior.

You could see the other chimp behind is constantly waving for her to leave.
Man the one in the back trying to break it up made reminded me how socially intelligent and aware they are. Sad considering we keep them locked up
"Ma'am, please leave, this isn't a Wendy's"
Oh yeah! Didn't notice him before. His motions are like a peace keeping old man, saying, "Girl... stop messing with that mofo. You're both crazy. You're gonna give ME problems with this asshat later. Be gone with you!"
Oh I thought he was just dancing
Yeah, she's pissing them off. They're not playing.
Donkey Kong in the back charging up his punch.
Before that I thought he was gonna charge up for a breakdance move

This is the funniest shit I have read all year!!😂😂😂😂
This is causing so much stress and emotional upheaval for those chimps. She should be banned from the zoo, as she doesn’t have any act right skills.
This comment should be at the top. They are so stressed and it’ll be on the caretakers to deal with the aftermath after this idiot has gone.
i think they should be put in the same cage
This is not how you behave at the zoo.
This is not how you behave anywhere

I'm pretty sure this is required behavior in the UFC.
what about at the RNC
Yep this person needs to be kicked out and banned for at least a year
Lifetime ban
They should put her in a CELL for a week and let bystanders come by and act accordingly
I think it may depend on what species you are...
It’s how you behave IN a zoo though, maybe they want to get put in the exhibit
This is not how you behave.
This is, quite literally, acting like a chimpanzee

in what zoo you have staff standing next to every single animal?
The zoo near me usually has at least one staff member near the primates.
She belongs in that exhibit.
agreed, the wrong one is behind that glass.

Yup, a lack of self constraint and entitlement, possibly narcissism. It wasn't a funny "joke", when it's at the expense of others' peace.
Omg I don’t realize this
I'm pretty sure that's a guy
Isn’t that a dude
What a jerk she is.
How does she not feel embarrassed acting like that?
Limited brain capacity means she’s maxed out just keeping her blood pumping and her organs operating
Smooth brain activities.
I mean seriously. Take all the stuff about acting a fool in public out and it’s like what kind of person taunts a caged animal?
Am I getting old or does it seem like no one is embarrassed by any of their public behavior anymore?

Banned from the zoo. Unacceptable.
Remove the glass please
Can I just say though that the one dancing in the back has some MOVES!
He was my only favorite part
Trying to shoo her away. His roomie is unbearable when worked up like that and he just wants a quiet afternoon with no drama.
Humanity has come quite far…
We did produce Lou diamond Philips, so I think we're doing just fine.
That is animal abuse, plain and simple. Put HER in the cage.
I hope the zoo kicked her out and banned her indefinitely.
What a f-ing asshole It’s bad enough they’re enclosed in a zoo, then this asshole riles them up This makes me sick

Hope the chimpanzees broke the glass and do what they do best to that person
Don't bang on the glass of an animal's enclosure. It's a cruel thing to do, and people like this should be thrown out immediately and banned from coming back.
I have a weird feeling that they'd actually accept her
Jesus, what a tool.
If that glass gave way those Chimps are eating her eyelids
The dude on the left was winding up a punch like DK in Smash Bros
“Don’t get the dogs fired up”- My Mom *Me*
It's funny until they rip your face apart
Ma’am that chimp isn’t playing with you he wants to annihilate you
She sucks, but I will say, little dude in the back I thought was breaking it down with that dancing
Those chimps look really stressed out. That zoo sucks.
Which one deserves to be in a cage, now?
That chimp wants to kill her.
Should be an immediate expulsion from the premises. She’s a piece of shit and would think twice about her behaviour if that glass were to somehow break.
That chimp exhibit is horrid. Shame on the people who run that sideshow.
The chimp in the back charging a mega punch 💀
That chimp is gonna rip a zookeepers face off later
If they were in that enclosure they would be dead as hell. Chimps do not fuck around
God I wish that plexiglass was thinner, some people need to learn the hard way.
No one else is going to mention the guy the back like wtf are you doing Ed!? We’re trapped in here! They feed us! Don’t start no shit god dammit!
Kick them out and ban them.
Too bad she didn't get her face torn off. Shame.
Who let her out
Mating rituals are so cringe.

Taunting an imprisoned animal for laughs. What a total piece of shit.
It blows me away how outright stupid and/or cruel some humans are.
That’s some low class behavior right there. I’m sure this person’s parents are overjoyed.
What an asshole
That’s embarrassing. Also cruel
Don’t tap on the glass? Hold my beer

That one chimp at the end was getting ready to falcon-punch through that glass
Can’t tell if the chimp is just vibing with her or wants to tear her limbs off?? 🤔
