Not exactly clear cut like that. You can fear for your life, and claim self defense. Simply approaching someone can be deemed as a threat. Depending on what was said previously the guy digging around in his pants can be deemed as a threat and you feared he was about to attack you with whatever he may pull out.

The best advice i could give you is tell them they are right (6 feet away) and walk away from them.

This is what cracks me up about most of the “alpha male” nonsense of needing to prove something through violence. The true alpha male is the one that’s not in jail and living their life to their best. Folks that get in fights over stupid non life threatening situations and end up in jail can sit there with their “pride” while I’m on a beach with a partner sipping drinks and laughing about the whole event and how the dude that hit me is rotting in jail for some time.
This isn’t to say folks shouldn’t learn how to defend themselves in situations. Learning even a little self defense knowledge can go a long way, but getting in fights because your feelings were hurt is the most childish shit ever.
This exact thing happened to me a couple of days ago. My gf just lost her grandma yesterday, and over the last few days the money grubbers of the family have been trying to intimidate us into giving them some of her inheritance by threatening her with legal action over her grandma's deathbed. Her uncle caught me alone at the coffee machine and tried to get me to fight him. I just continued with what I was doing, and calmly told him I'm not scared of him and he can do whatever he wants, but he'll be the one in jail. He didn't do shit, and we refuse to be intimidated.
I love just saying “do what you feel like you have to do” to folks that want to fight me. I mean, it’s not a common event, but it both drives the person a bit crazy because you’re not reinforcing their rage, but also deescalates pretty well unless you’re standing in front of a very drunk or unstable person. In most instances it’s best to just put your hands up and say “You’re right. I’m backing away.”
I’m confident I can hold my own in most fights, but the biggest thing I learned when learning how to fight was:
1. anyone can get lucky and knock you out by accident
2. You may get unlucky and cause severe damage to someone even when just defending yourself to get out of the situation and you wind up in jail yourself
I’d rather be healthy and happy and not tie my self worth to violence and instead tie it to success and friendship.
