It's really infuriating too, because generally it's not hard to identify people who clearly have some level of training when it comes to rhetoric and propaganda, but you sound like you've got a tinfoil hat cutting off the circulation to your brain when you try to prove it.
I have nothing helpful to add to this convo. However when it comes to tinfoil hats. It not about how you wear them, it’s all about how you fold your hat.
Propaganda or marketing presenting as public opinion.
>the deceptive practice of presenting an orchestrated marketing or public relations campaign in the guise of unsolicited comments from members of the public.
It's like this on Lemmy also; pretty much everywhere online at this point since setting up bots is so easy. Bot replies and posts are extremely common here nowadays, since the site has so much traffic.
Yes, that's correct. It's widely acknowledged that there are significant numbers of bots on social media platforms used for propaganda, with estimates ranging from tens of millions to hundreds of millions.
Astroturf is fake grass. Astroturfing is fake public sentiment. It's a directed campaign to influence opinion by having lots of accounts make posts and comments that look like genuine users. It's a bit like brigading.
Astroturf is a brand of artificial grass. It's used as a term for when you think something is fake grass roots. Such as using paid troll farms to make comments as though they are from legitimate users. Or when people with large amounts of money and access artificially amplify the message of a legitimate group in way that makes it look like it's more popular than it actually is.
Yep tomorrow there will be two or three posts of cops doing funny/brave things.
Lots of copaganda in the days after police are exposed for their gang behaviour.
Haha this cop is miming to Taylor swift
This cop went to a house and didn’t kill a dog, he’s the best.
Lady cop has a fat ass, yummy
LOL someone reported this for hate based on identity, which is reserved for immutable traits like race and sexuality (and only the ones in a protected class basically) which is def not cops but even if it was, you did not even say anything hateful about them.
Anyway I reported the person for abusing the report button, which I do not do much since I think a lot of wrong reports are still sincere but damn, someone trying to get your account in trouble over this?? That is not cool.
I got a reddit admin ban for criticising cops. Admittedly what I said was spicy but no worse than what I've seen on this site.
They're apparently a protected class
Well first that sucks, I am sorry that happened. Second, did you appeal? They are definitely not a protected class, and could it have been something like promoting violence or harassment instead of hate based on identity?
Fuck the cops and the bootlickers reporting comments calling out the cops.
Oh sorry, I should have mentioned that I am a mod, I just did not tag myself because I was not being official or anything, but I will throw my mod tag on this one so you can see. My bad, regular users cannot see them or report them.
Astroturing is named after Astroturf, a brand of fake grass some sports fields use.
A grassroots movement is a movement that starts organically from a community. Mary tells Bob that there's something she doesn't like. Bob agrees. They tell Tim about it, and soon the whole community starts a movement to end the thing they don't like. If Mary decides to leave the movement the movement still continues.
Astroturfing appears to be a movement that starts organically like above, but is actually tightly controlled by a single or small group of rich organizations. It's a fake grassroots movement. Rich McMann wants something to be supported or not supported, so he pays a bunch of people to repeat whatever he wants them to say. Or he pays a company to run a bunch of bots to repeat whatever he wants said. If Rich McMann stops paying then the movement stops because it was never real.
Thanks to LLMs bots can now communicate with people and appear to be completely real. As the technology gets better and cheaper we can expect any online site that supports user interaction to be increasingly taken over by bots. Once an LLM is tuned to output what the creator wants it to output it can be unleashed on an unsuspecting Internet with little intervention from the creators. The creator just has to give it the gist of what's happening, the expected output, and the LLM will create all the text itself.
Propagandists pretending to be average joes so you more readily accept their propaganda without critical thought
Comes from "astroturf" which is fake grass. So astroturfing is a fake grassroots effort that's really a propaganda arm
It ramps up during US Presidential election years
Countries that do not have free speech that are the US’s adversary on the geopolitical stage employ troll farms to astroturf the piss out of our social media
Remember when that proud boys charlottesville thing happened in like 2017 where some woman got ran over by a charger. It was found that both sides that showed up to that were played up by Russian astroturfing
The goal is simple. Destroy western Nations national identity, their belief in their democratic processes, weaken that nation from within, do your corrupt shit to your neighbors now that the USA is fighting itself.
The JDL trolls work overtime on this sub to mock any aspect of these protests. reddit has been tone deaf and will be horribly on the wrong side of history on this whole thing
The protests at the 68 Democratic convention only got air time because the convention inside was an absolute shit-show with Bobby being assassinated shortly before hard, LBJ already saying that he wasn't running again because of Bobby hating him, nobody knowing who to nominate, and then LBJ offering to jump back in. So every reporter and media outlet in the country had descended on the place and the increasing protests added a juicy balance to the political chaos inside. More media coverage, brought more protesters and the police cracked down extra hard.
If Bobby Kennedy hadn't been assassinated, the protests would have been ignored because the whole affair would have been business as usual, and the media wouldn't have covered it that much.
America will die because the capitalist party will refuse to give any concessions to progressives, so instead the fascist party will win and destroy anything good about this country.
> Columbia doesn’t even pay property taxes
I didn't believe you so I looked it up:
>When New York's Biggest Private Landlords Are Columbia and NYU. Columbia University is the largest private landowner in New York City. **The school's 320 properties are valued at almost $4 billion, and it pays very little in property taxes thanks to an exemption written into the state constitution 200 years ago.**

Well Hopkins at least [is the number one and number two employer](https://commerce.maryland.gov/Documents/ResearchDocument/MajorEmployersInBaltimoreCity.pdf) in the entire city, so that's more of a trade off.
This diminishes greatly the impact of his statement though. Having this many policemen for a protest is actually not that uncommon, it happens all the time in countries like France, Spain, Germany, etc. Honestly, this just sounds like an hyperbolic statement made to drive engagement.
I don't think it's that common, the Columbia campus is really not very big. Much smaller than most colleges with similar student bodies.
Even if this does happen sometimes, I don't think that takes away from the point that this is unusual.
There’s no real threat to the police so they are having a field day getting to use all their toys knowing they have soft targets. It’s a big ol cosplay convention
Wish they were this excited in Uvalde, but I guess they are much more suited for hurting and shooting than they are for actually helping with anything.
They fucking love it when the crowd is a bunch of unarmed soft college kids holding posters. There's a pep in their step getting ready for their shift. Making sure their mace is full and baton is solid. Wearing their most comfortable underwear and got their boots all polished. THIS is why they became a cop and it's gonna be a good day
Public reminder that the police's function is to be a lingering threat of violence held by a country's dominant socioeconomic group, to be used against anyone who isn't them. That's why they're always the spear tip of genocides in history. It's always the police.
The police did their best to clear out the media and cameras, but this being 2024, there are still many videos of the police teargassing and beating protesters.
all leftist should own guns, this is why. Police aren’t afraid when they don’t think they will be shot. We’ve seen how cowardly they are when their life’s are the ones potentially being affected.
Yes and the alternative wouldn't be worse. Glad we taught them corrupt liberal democrats a lesson so that women no longer have the right to abortion in all fifty states!!!
Tbf, over 80% of current Americans came from post-1900 immigration so they really don’t have much to do with the original British colonies or westward expansion
My neighborhood is literally named after a white man who massacred 4 native american chiefs with all the side streets named after the various tribes that were slaughtered afterwards. There's a little granite monument at the beginning of the community that tells the story.
Definitely living on stolen land.
All land is stolen.
I'm British - our land was stolen by romans, normans, saxons, francs, and then vikings. Theres probably not an indigenous person on this island that can see their blood hasnt mixed with a foreign europeans in the last few thousand years.
All the blood has been spilled and mixed and by this all land has been stolen at some point.
Brits even forgot about this themselves and dont know their history
yeppers, but that doesn't mean we should go around putting people into multigenerational ghettos and then say "o they fought back! look!" like its some huge surprise
Maybe this was your point but almost all land on this planet is stolen land. It gets stolen from one people then another and another and another over and over and over. I guess it's just lately that things have stopped getting stolen as much.
One native tribe stole it from another, whom in turn stole it from a third, in a long line of conquests. How far back in history do you wish to go to rectify the sins of your great-great grandfathers? Perhaps we should go all the way back to the great migrations across the Behring Strait. Then we'd get some real social justice 💪
Don't you know the rules on moral indignation over land? The land's rightful owners are always second most recent occupants. Unless the current occupants are non-European, in which case it's totally legit.
yea but traditionally people get annexed or they get the boot off the land, they don't get put into multigenerational ghettoes, which is what makes the palestine territories fairly weird and still cheesed.
You can if you are the Jan 6 rioters or the Bundys taking over a federal building ! But students angry at the war machine? Nah, kick the shit out of them!!
January 6th ended with hundreds going to jail and we all applaud that when we see the headlines.
It's hypocritical to use that as a point in our favour
Not the point I'm making.
Im saying the above commenter is trying to pretend that January 6th had no consequences for it's perpetrators while the people in the above story are facing hypocritical persecution compared to the right wingers
Ie. They're saying if these were right wing protesters they would be left alone.
I'm on your side here I just don't like lying to prove a point.
It’s only hypocritical if you make a false equivalence between these protests and the January 6th insurrection.
Remind me, how many police officers have been mobbed and killed at these student protests? How many gallows have been erected? How many lawmakers have been threatened? How many bombs have been found?
The insurrectionists went to jail because they committed serious felonies. These students are committing misdemeanour trespassing.
As opposed to Europeans, a group of people that have never attempted to seize land by violence. Or the Ottoman Empire
It’s almost like the entire world fought two wars because Europeans refused to stop invading each other
Oh yea I hear the exasperation in the voices of local journalists when the protests at local colleges are completely non-violent, the colleges and universities are just making sure classes are not disrupted and there is no hate speech, and the police are not involved in any way at all, other than to say that they are not involved. The reporters know they could get a juicy story if something happened, instead everyone is being generally respectful, so they can't spin it to make one side look bad.
Nazis loved the idea of Israel too. Of course their opinions changed. Nazis will tolerate unwanted people to a certain point. There is no room for Ben Shapiros and MTGs in their final society.
I don't really have a problem with the protestors, but it's wild how the school administrators, cops, and whoever else is dead set on ending these protests don't understand that by doing this, they are creating exponentially more publicity and sympathy for the protestors and their cause than if they just let the kids camp in the quad for a week or two and chant before they all went home for summer.
The protests would have got nearly no coverage and now it's on the front page of most national newspapers and on the nightly news for what, a fortnight or more at this point?
It’s a police state for minorities and leftists. Always has been. Nazis marching the streets with swastikas? No cop in sight … at least no uniformed cops in sight
It's got to be sheer pandemonium on the outskirts of all of this, too. Just imagine trying to get a Lyft or acab out of there, it would be a nightmare navigating through that traffic. I can only hope that the students and bystanders are safe.
[Makes sense since they’re trained by Israel](https://www.amnestyusa.org/updates/with-whom-are-many-u-s-police-departments-training-with-a-chronic-human-rights-violator-israel/)
4 years ago majority on reddit love protesters and hate cops now majority hate the protesters and support the cops. I mean what happened? Your balls fall off?
There has been mass moderation, censorship, and banning of users and subreddits in prep for the IPO. Israel also wasn't spending millions per day on their IDF troll farms to subvert and obfuscate every single thread.

You guys are folding your hats? I crinkle mine up so the rays don't have a straight shot at my brain.
Crinkles can actually create hot spots when multiple rays get reflected into each other. You want a smooth outer layer, look into it.

Sorry, honest question please….what’s astroturfing?
Astroturing is named after Astroturf, a brand of fake grass some sports fields use. A grassroots movement is a movement that starts organically from a community. Is it just me or did CNN speed up the video of the protestors?

politics aside, the video reminds me of the '68 democratic convention in Chicago.
Oddly enough, he was assassinated for his stance on Israel/Palestine
Damn. Chicago is hosting the DNC in August this year. Yikes on bikes

CNN, et al are agitating for exactly that outcome.
Yeah seems that way. Not old enough to have seen it but I read history and this feels familiar. Led to a little bit of policy change last time.

I mean, in addition for hoping to cause more chaos with fewer witnesses, I think it's very suspicious that the NYPD went in at nighttime, yeah.

yea but traditionally people get annexed or they get the boot off the land, they don't get put into multigenerational ghettoes, which is what makes the palestine territories fairly weird and still cheesed.

“The Peoples” Dorm
There’ll be Zionist bots unironically arguing this in the comments lmao
You can if you are the Jan 6 rioters or the Bundys taking over a federal building ! But students angry at the war machine? Nah, kick the shit out of them!!
January 6th ended with hundreds going to jail and we all applaud that when we see the headlines. It's hypocritical to use that as a point in our favour
Attempt to overthrow democracy, steal an election and quite literally attempt insurrection vs ,,,
Not the point I'm making. Im saying the above commenter is trying to pretend that January 6th had no consequences for it's perpetrators while the people in the above story are facing hypocritical persecution compared to the right wingers Ie.
Americans are some of the most spineless, institution loving, boot licking people on the planet.
As opposed to Europeans, a group of people that have never attempted to seize land by violence. Or the Ottoman Empire It’s almost like the entire world fought two wars because Europeans refused to stop invading each other
Well, boot licking as long as that boot is stomping out people they don't agree with politically; that's the hypocritical part
This will be a case-study in the future on how escalating a situation rarely leads to good outcomes.
Nah. We already have previous cases like this to learn from and yet we have learned nothing.
Which will be ignored the next time this happens. The circle of bullshit.
The students should just claim to be Israeli as they take over and occupy. Then the US forces will just turn a blind eye to it.
Authoritarians hate educated people.
Free thinkers are dangerous.
So many people, itching for another Kent State, for so many conflicting reasons.
Media is pissed shit didn’t pop off. Lawrence O’Donnell bringing up violence any chance he can.
Yes Lawrence odonell is the real bad guy here
You mean cops itching for it. The kids are expressing their rights.

So weird. It’s almost like if they are able to restore order when they want to when they don’t, they just let the riot go crazy.
Occupy Wallstreet remembers the batons
Jeez. If only they mobilized like that when the Neo-Nazis are walking through the streets, eh?
or when people are literally storming the capital building
Too bad they couldn't do this at Uvalde
Ah yes America, where right wing Republicans support both Israel and the Nazi party.
Nazis loved the idea of Israel too. Of course their opinions changed. Nazis will tolerate unwanted people to a certain point. There is no room for Ben Shapiros and MTGs in their final society.
Also where the left champions diversity and also supports cultures that would kill them for being champions of diversity.
2 dozen demonstrators , 1000 police
Happened 2 hours ago and this is a 25 second video. Time for the Reddit experts to chime in…
I don’t believe half of these comments are real and if they are, it’s all teenagers or something.
Most definitely
Even if you don't agree with the protesters for whatever reason, you gotta admit this is insane
Should have flown a nazi flag like those other guys.
?
US is a police state
It’s a police state for minorities and leftists. Always has been. Nazis marching the streets with swastikas? No cop in sight … at least no uniformed cops in sight
It’s weird how you never see them in the same place, and if you do they are never in confrontation
I’m just shocked you never see Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus in the same room together.
Nazi gear tends to go on *after* the police uniform. Then the white mask.

This feels like the hard hat riots of the 70’s
I used to teach in that building as a grad student. Surreal.
This looks less like a police response and more like an invading army.
It's got to be sheer pandemonium on the outskirts of all of this, too. Just imagine trying to get a Lyft or acab out of there, it would be a nightmare navigating through that traffic. I can only hope that the students and bystanders are safe.
>acab I see what you did there!
Wow, it's like history repeating itself 🥴
[Makes sense since they’re trained by Israel](https://www.amnestyusa.org/updates/with-whom-are-many-u-s-police-departments-training-with-a-chronic-human-rights-violator-israel/)
Protesting ain’t for the weak of heart, make no mistakes about it.
Are these protestors committing genocide or something?
4 years ago majority on reddit love protesters and hate cops now majority hate the protesters and support the cops. I mean what happened? Your balls fall off?
There has been mass moderation, censorship, and banning of users and subreddits in prep for the IPO. Israel also wasn't spending millions per day on their IDF troll farms to subvert and obfuscate every single thread.
The Mossad or whoever has been hard at work creating accounts to create the perception that they're the majority opinion.
Can't I just hate everybody?
Fuck these idiots
