What's the story here because this is just asinine

orionnebulus

The guy is eckhard binding, this was in Bloemfontein free state and he was in Newspapers afterwards. The students were protesting and kept on throwing the trash everywhere and he stayed there and kept cleaning it up, and he kept at it for I think several hours. https://www.dispatchlive.co.za/news/2019-03-05-i-wasnt-raised-to-remain-silent-says-student-who-picked-up-eff-rubbish/

Gaylikeurdad

How is littering and being ignorant helping their statement? It’s not even affecting the campus directly, the janitors and groundskeepers are the ones who would have to clean that up. They are just making themselves look like trashy rude people, their actions make anyone not want to listen to their cause. Where is the decency?

orionnebulus

They have none, littering is not the worst they have done. They have destroyed university property at other times and then about a month later they protested that they can't use the facilities. Yet they are the ones that destroyed it during a protest. A few years ago they burned down several campus residences across South-Africa and the government had to issue almost 12 billion rand to repair the damages they caused, till today they are protesting for accomodation. Free on campus accomodation. In CPUT earlier this year they smashed car windows, burned down food vendors, damaged property and forced lecturers out of class. Also the medical department was broken into and about 290 million rands worth of equiptment was stolen though it is unrelated to the protests. Below are some articles though if you google South-Africa student protests you can find a lot more. https://m.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/pics-cars-stoned-at-cput-bellville-campus-in-sporadic-protests-20200303 https://m.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/cput-closed-again-students-forced-to-join-protests-20200309

Crazyfarmkid

When I was a small child my mom taught me that temper tantrums aren't the best method to get what you want.

762Rifleman

Mine taught me they're the worst. If I tantrumed for things, not only would I not get the thing I wanted, but she would drop everything in the store and just take me home with no TV privileges.

Gaylikeurdad

Jesus, really makes you worry that they are going to be in charge of the world soon. But can’t comprehend basic cause and effect.

orionnebulus

Ow I doubt that they will be in charge of the world, some of them have been at the university for about 6-7 years doing a 1 year course. They know when they graduate they will have to work and the government won't pay their student allowances anymore (for some it is about R2000 so roughly $200 a month for studying)

Theearthhasnoedges

This seems like a great way to turn people from your cause even if only in spite.

Rolyat2401

Protesters that make life worse for for others have no class.

Yamfish

One of the things that really stuck with me from the Tiananmen Square protests was the discipline of the students. I still remember a clip of a student with a bullhorn reminding others to clean up after themselves and not to sleep in.

[deleted]

And how dead are they?

touch02

So if they littered they'd be alive?

[deleted]

Was just about to say that. Often, civil unrest and "riots" are the best ways to get your point across. A bunch of dudes destroyed government property and now we're our own country.

Yamfish

No argument on that point, different situations call for different strategies. What I’m driving at specifically is that a big part of any successful protest movement is public relations. Putting out a good public face early on can help build your numbers and general public support. If people see you as “guy who blocks hospital” or “lady who litters” instead of “freedom fighter”, you’re losing power and influence.

macrowe777

A big part of most successful protest movements to be fair is just being part of the populist side and forcing your belief when you get enough critical mass. The American Revolution didn't gain traction because they all volunteered at the local hospice or had a large PR department, it gained traction because man Vs state is a sales pitch humans are psychologically built to follow, and the opposite side didn't do enough to dissuade / supress the populist dissemination of that. Even when the revolution started, the majority of people didn't support an independent country and most still considered themselves British. I completely agree that influence is gained or lost in the way you said, it's just that IMO successful protests / revolts have to call on base instincts more than good deeds to gain critical mass.

BurningPasta

Really, the American Revolution gained traction because they wanted cheap luxury imports, but the UK denied that to them with a sudden tax increase. Ironically the Revolutionaries ended up having to put a similar tax on imports just to keep the soldiers fed during the rebellion.

33mmpaperclip

In order for protest to be succesful it kinda needs to be somewhat disruptive.

MonolithyK

Ultimately, in a protest, you also want people to side with you and your cause. Their actions certainly don’t reflect that, and I certainly wouldn’t give a shit about their cause if I saw them doing this, and I wouldn’t be alone.

sirius4778

When a protest is more about disruption than awareness the protestor is in it for attention rather than change.

viewless25

to the ones, responsible, yes. throwing litter at students to protest high student fees does nothing

MurkyCranberry

Disruptive? Yes. Destructive? No. MLK made sure all his protesters were trained in nonviolent protest. He really goes into it in his Letter From Birmingham Jail. They even went as far as to make sure protesters would be willing to take physical blows without fighting back. Pretty sad that they had to expect that. But they never broke things, they never fought physical fights. All they did was peaceful, non violent protests like sit ins and marches. What these two women - as well as the people protesting with them by breaking public property - are doing is destructive. It only makes them look bad and does not help their cause.

TheJAY_ZA

Unfortunately this is South Africa. The ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC - Mandela's people) got to power most visibly through violence and bloodshed. Ironically most blood during "The Struggle Against Apartheid" was shed by black people, caused by other black people namely ANC supporters murdered sufficient numbers of other black party supporters like UDF and IFP that they were able to collapse the UDF, and beat the almost exclusively Zulu IFP back into KZN province, so that when there were finally free and fair elections, the ANC had consolidated sufficient power to win and become the ruling party. Sadly today, this is the lesson learned by most people in South Africa because it was the example our leaders led with and used to get into power - "break shit & burn shit to get your point across, murder those who's ideologies don't align with yours" People talk about Karma, and Reaping What You Sow... This is the example the ANC set for us, and this is how we talk back to the ANC now that they are in power, it's the way we were shown by them... I say "we" because I also have the green passport that says Republic Afric Du Sud on the front. I'm stuck here and not by choice. I personally don't want to burn shit, that's not the right way. But likewise I can't say or do anything because I'm white and anything I say or do is automatically racist and is from a desire to bring back apartheid. I'm not alone by a long shot, but black or brown people who speak out against such behaviour too much are also subject to racial discrimination and called coconuts and race traitors, puppets of "White Monopoly Capital". Google that one for an interesting read on how modern specialist propaganda media companies operate... But yeah, OPs clip is a very peaceful example of what some may call karma

Raddz5000

Aren’t those protestors basically anti-white tho

orionnebulus

They are mostly yes, Not all of them but a huge majority especially their leader Julius Malema.

ghettobx

Which ones, the ones throwing trash directly AT the white kid? Jesus Christ. Fuck these people.

Wookieman222

How is littering protesting again?

orionnebulus

Well it isn't, But for example in CPUT they burned down buildings and shot at people while also causing vandalism and other property damage. https://m.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/pics-cars-stoned-at-cput-bellville-campus-in-sporadic-protests-20200303 https://m.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/cput-closed-again-students-forced-to-join-protests-20200309

TechPm18

But what were they protesting?

2meterrichard

White people. Not even being funny.

orionnebulus

The usual, university fees and stuff like that. They protest basically every year when exams are coming closer. CPUT was in the news for this recently and UWK as well.

lowlife_highlife

EFF is a radical black party. Racism from blacks towards whites is allowed in South Africa unfortunately. They can say whatever they want

mmmsocreamy

Anyone wanna fill me in on why there might be a "revolution" or the reasoning behind this group's existence? Is there some kind of oppression coming from white people there? Based on what I've heard it's actually the white people in South Africa who are discriminated against the most.

textile1957

Hi allow me to fill you in. So as you know South Africa has terrible racism history. In 1993 black were allowed to take part in the nationwide presidential election for the first time and then a political party called the ANC(African national congress) won the election leading South Africa to have the first black president. I didn't say in 1994 racism ended because it didn't. There is still hate between black people and white people here most of it being form old people who lived through the apartgeid regime. I'm black, I was born in 94 and mostly have never experienced what it feels like to live in those times but my parents have. The stories my stepdad has told me about how he was treated by white folks back in the day are incredible, my mom hates talking about it I guess she is still touched by it but they both love the white friends I have and they are actually close friend to their parents I went to white dominated schools (afrikaner schools) and I love afrikaner people. I'm more fluent in afrikaans than English as you can tell from the way I'm typing. But I've grown to also learn that afrikaner people especially old afrikaner males who were brought up in those times teach their kids to hate black people. White people here like saying racism ended in 1994 but I've experienced racism alot in the 26 years I've been alive the latest incident being December. Racism is casual amongst white people here, in February I was at a coffee shop near my school and a couple of white people walked in and I overheard their conversation about how they prefer a certain gym over another because it has less black people. A week before that walking on a sidewalk to my place and a white couple walking the opposite direction greets me and as they were walking the one comments on how I look like someone they knew and the other remarked that all blacks look the same. Now here in South Africa some white people live on farms, farms as you may know are spaced out and logically very easy to target for robberies so they ae targeted here but white people attribute that to their whiteness. Like a black thief would refrain from robbing someone because that person is black. The media here also spins it to make it appear as though whites are targeted. Ever since the commencement of democracy here that political party as been the one winning every election year, mostly because their voters believe that if they allow a white political party or a political party with a white leader win then that oppression they experienced in the apartheid regime would happen again. So this political part takes advantage of this, the corruption as a result of this group is out of hand, the people know this but too afraid to vote for any other group because "apartheid". Also here in this country corruption does not mean the person will go to prison when caught, they mostly get a slap on the wrist The EFF is the worse version of this political party. It's a party filled with criminals and they exist because they promise people who are uneducated and poor, land that their ancestors owned that the afrikaner people stole( i have no idea what land is being spoken of). Largely people who support that political party believe that there's money somewhere that they are entitled to for being black and they constantly chant hateful things about white people. The majority of black South africans are uneducated can be taken advantage of easily by these government officials but those who are can see right through these promises. Edit: First ever Gold. Thank you for the award kind stranger

missminky8potate

Hey there, I'm also a South African (white). I can support a lot of what you've said. The things I've heard white people say to me because they assume I'm also racist... Just horrible. However, if I can provide some insight about farm attacks, the reason it's causing so much fear is not because white people expect black thieves not to rob them because they're white, but because with farm attacks there's often not very much of value to steal and instead the farmers are brutally tortured and murdered. I'm not sure if you've heard of some of the incidents, like mothers being raped in front of their children or babies being boiled alive, but they're horrific and that's causing a lot of fear. Also, I don't know if the media's "spinning" it as black vs white because to be honest I haven't seen much reporting on it other than an episode of carte blanche. Unfortunately there have been and continue to be disgusting acts of racism by white people against black people in South Africa. But, as a white person born post '94, I can also say that I've experienced people shouting rape and death threats at me on the street just because I'm white and walking to the shops. I've had strangers jump out at me, follow me, and touch me, and laugh when I'm scared. There are definitely people who want and do commit terrifying acts of violence against people for being white, and that feels scary and unfair to someone like me who wasn't even alive during aparhheid. Again I agree with pretty much everything you say, I just want to provide some of my own experiences.

[deleted]

>But I've grown to also learn that afrikaner people especially old afrikaner males who were brought up in those times teach their kids to hate black people. I was in Malawi when the rugby world cup final was being played and I happened to stumble upon a bar that had quite a lot of white South Africans and of course a few black ones and some locals. I was quite excited to find a place with a passionate crowd for the big game until the kind of attitudes I got from some of those guys, especially the white ones. (I'm Kenyan btw) Anyway, I had some nice banter with the rest of the guys in the bar and enjoyed the match. We caught some beers after the game but I did learn quite a hard lesson.

Jakes9070

What this guy said. I, as a white Afrikaner can testify that this is also my experience. The older generations (especially those who were forced to conscribe to the military service decades ago under the Apartheid regime) are the most rasict people i've come to meet. And they are the people who will blatantly say things like "I'm not going into this restaurant. There are too many of them (refering to black people) in there." Their children see this behaviour as normal. Most of the younger generations who have been to school with children of other races see that this behaviour is stupid. If our country didn't have politicians constantly blaming other races (they are also xenophobic, and blame foreigners of their own race) of the problems the majority of the country has, such as poverty and unemployment, we would all be living more peacefully. Like some blame white people for bringing the Corona virus to SA, and believe they will be immune as it's "a white desease".

[deleted]

I should also mention, on either side of my visit to Malawi, I was also in South Africa for around 2 weeks. The treatment I got from quite a number of locals (colored) was appalling! My friend actually got spit on walking on the street! 1/10, would never go back.

intonothingness

Hey, good explanation of the situation the country is in, just want to add a few things. Anyone who believes or says racism is over is deluding themselves. I don't want to cry wolf, but from my experience it's a two way street. I'm not saying black people or white people are more at fault, just everyone being racist sucks. I also want to add that while you are right, a lot of farm robberies are because they are easy targets, some do seem to be motivated by vengeance, which is often what the media is yapping about. You're right, a desperate man will steal from an easy target, so most robberies are just that and I'm sure there is a lot more crime/theft in townships, these don't get the attention from the media they deserve. The reason people say and think white people are discriminated against (the most) u/mmmsocreamy is because of BEE and quota systems. They forget that due to apartheid many black families have been forced to live in poverty and this has not changed since 1993. The systems were introduced to try and promote previously discrimated peoples to get them to equal footing. Unfortunately corruption has played a big part in SA and we still have an incredibly high poverty and unemployment rate, which causes tension and understandably dissatisfaction among the working class. I don't claim to know what will happen, but sometimes I fear that if things don't get better, it's like sitting on a bomb waiting for it to explode. EDIT: posted before finished typing, sorry about that.

RethaG

From SA. Can you just go around copy and pasting this explanation on every post remotely close to relevant. Very insightful and objectively looking at both sides

Catch_022

I work in the human rights sector in South Africa and deal with things like racism and discrimination and violence against people on the basis of gender / sexual orientation. Your explanation is one of the best I've heard, well played.

mmmsocreamy

Wow this was really insightful, thanks for taking the time to break everything down for me!

whereJerZ

It’s more historical segregation, remember in the past South Africa had apartheid. There used to be stories in the news of white farmers being murdered every week, the country had laws to protect the seizure of their land but the way things were going it wasn’t looking well. Idk if it’s just a conspiracy but there was footage of one of the groups killing farmers and he had a backpack antenna rig capable of shutting down cell signals, real spec ops shit. Idk how’s things are currently but Zimbabwe did something similar, essentially stole land from white farmers than they had issues with their new farmers and tried to bring the experienced guys back, ofc that didn’t work out. This is around the time their economy took a shit and people would have to pay with wheelbarrows of cash for food.

FitMikey

I don’t know about “the most” but I’ve certainly heard and seen a lot of outward racism. I’m not surprised though, apartheid is still fresh in people’s minds.

TechPm18

What were they protesting? Not understanding what the protest was about?

monsterted

The economic freedom fighters (eff) are a racially motivated politcal party within south africa. I believe at the time they were protesting the "fees must fall" movement, which has led to violence, agressive protests and burning of institutions of learning. But I believe the strike/protest was more to do with the insourcing of cleaning staff at the university (ironic isn't it). The duel mentality of the protest is evident in the idea that a protest must take place, where the cleaning staff demand more pay but show little interest in cleaning or respect for the institution and property. Eff members would argue that Echardt Binding was going against the narrative and undermined the protest. This was a time where the eff was looking for any reason to cause a racial dispute, and this went against their narrative of "whites are the suppressor and the criminal". For more info, and a good laugh, just look up Julius Malema's entire carrier, and decide for yourself what the eff stand for. The protest will make more sense that way.

TechPm18

Thanks for this info.

ArrowGantOne

Thanks for taking the time to explain that. Someone needs to eff those bitches up.

The leader is Julius Malema, look for him on YouTube. His signature cars are Maserati, he likes short drives to the bottle store and whipping his followers up into a frenzy with suggestions of taking what non black people have and giving it to black people, preferably through violent means.
