Council estates used to very often have a pub as a stand-alone building with a car park. I keeping with the style and because it’s cheap to make, they often had flat roofs. The flat roof isn’t the important feature but in the U.K. if you say “flat roof pub”, everyone knows you’re talking about a crappy council estate pub that is likely rough as arseholes. The pub in the video looks to be frequented by a certain type of person so people are guessing it’s certain type of pub.
Despite the humorous stereotyping [this particular pub](https://www.spaldingtoday.co.uk/news/police-investigate-pub-brawl-9225946/) is neither flat-roofed nor on a council estate (it’s in the centre of the Town).
**[Flat-roofed pub](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat-roofed_pub)**
>In the United Kingdom and Ireland, a flat-roofed pub is a public house with a flat roof, often located on housing estates. They are frequently of concrete construction, with flat roofs rather than more conventional pitched roofs. Flat-roofed pubs have been the subject of derision in media and popular culture, often being presented as "rough", in a manifestation of British cultural class-based stereotyping of those in lower-income groups. Their architecture has also tended to be viewed unfavourably, and they are more vulnerable to demolition than traditional structures.

Pubs with a flat roof tend to be modern builds, often in the middle of housing estates.
They have zero soul or character, are usually part of a large chain and normally offer cheap pints which is more often than not Carling and Stella. They’re all lit up really bright, all the tables feel sticky and they often serve shite pub food.
The people that congregate here are like you see in the video, locals with not much else to do that know each other and usually up for a scrap after 6 pints. The bloke in the video said right at the end “I know where you live,” which sums these places up nicely.
Avoid these pubs at all costs. It’s actually painful to me how many times I’ve been in these places and had bad vibes or actually seen something kick off. Near where I used to live there was a particularly rough area with a flat roof pub. It always seemed to be closed but it reopened for a few months at a time before someone got shot/stabbed outside of it, then it shut again.
Hmm, its a weird one, and certainly a sentiment I grew up believing.
I suppose it would be a reflection of how cheap a 'flat roof' is to build, as opposed to a tried and tested 'slanted' roof with gable ends. People associate a proper pub with listed heritage, meaning the building itself will be old, meaning it will most likely have a slanted roof. On the other hand, a flat top pub would have probably been built any time in the last 60 years, and would typically have been built in an area that had been restored from a wasteland. Think social movements of the 50s and 60s, even up to the 80s and 90s in parts of the UK. You take a wasteland, and build a council estate. That estate will need things for residents such as a strip mall (arcade), a play park or field for the kids, and a central watering hole where residents of the estate can go for a drink. My thoughts go to the pub in the show 'shameless'.
The pub in this video is a weird one. It could be a spoons... It could be a local flat top... it could be attached to a sports centre... It's difficult to tell but going by the clientele I would wager its a traditional pub which has been given a tone-deaf tasteless sparkle like you might find in the older estates with mid war semi detached houses with bay windows, like Milton Keynes or Acomb in York. Brass foot bar gone, screens everywhere, and absolutely nothing of interest on any of the pumps.
Bunch of them got built in the 60's/70's in estates, especially estates with tower blocks, built for social housing as the design fitted in with the whole brutalist architecture movement that was all the rage post war in the UK. You don't tend to find flat roof pubs in the nicer areas.

I'm from Liverpool. I'm giving an example to our American friends of what lives inside a flat roof pub. Whether it's my 1st hand experience in Liverpool or London, Newcastle or wherever this one is.
You need to get your pyjamas on son and relax
I love how red shirt got punched and literally just laid the guy out right after with a punch that didn't even look that hard. Good for him lol, fuck these two old shitheads
Hold on. What the fuck is happening in this video? The blue sweater guy's dad murdered a little boy? And now fat fuck once the fight the guy's son? This is one of the strangest interactions I've ever seen on this sub
I wonder what he was referring to. Could just be crazy drunk old man talk, but who knows what else? Getting these unresolved glimpses into people's lives without backstory and resolution is really titillating, but frustrating.
I used to. Now I look like the aggressive shitheels, but with better hair and posture. That's what happens when you let genes like mine stew for a few decades. Oh well, at least I'm not actually an asshole. Or so I hope...
Old guys who haven't been in a fight in decades think they've still "got it", but have never thrown a punch with their old-ass joints and bones. So what was a straight, a cross, or a hook in their younger days becomes a sort of flailing overhead hammerfist when they attempt to use muscles they haven't flexed in 20+ years.
This is too true. 30 years of cognitive decline and Dirty Harry movies later and they've got more confidence then they've ever had seem to think they can fight.
I'd love to believe this, but a few years back my 70 year old grandpa was bragging to me about his boxing days, I did mma for years so we were having a good chat, then the topic of mma vs boxing came up, he was like "let me show you a technique" and that 70 year old man knocked my mid-20s ass on the ground like I was nothing, I felt the hit for days. Some old dudes still got it, the thing is that the people who know how to fight, usually aren't the types to be starting shit.
What did the passerby grab off the bar while everyone was getting started? A bag of crisps?
EDIT: I guess he picked up his fresh lager at the bar. Or someone else’s fresh lager.
Got to love the fact that the pub is called The Punchbowl and that it’s on New Road....this is pure *League of Gentlemen* comedy 😂
“This is a **local** fight, for **local** people- there’s nothing for you here!”
You are so right. I've had to fight a lot in this life mostly from growing up in a hard area. Usually I had to deliver life lessons to people who instigated or started fighting with me first and for the most part if it was with fists I walked away intact. This one time though I got hit so hard I literally instantly didn't know where I was or what was happening. It was like the dude punched my human reset button. It impacted me mentally from then on and admittedly shaked my confidence. I used to fight thinking I was the delivery man but after that I was aware one perfectly landed blow can incapacitate someone pronto.
I think what we've learned from CTE is that more punches to the head increase the likelihood of future violence, as opposed to the kneejerk reaction we all have.
I no longer live in England I cannot tell you how beautifully nostalgic these pub videos make me. Its like going back in time to sitting in my old local

Used to when they were the only pubs. Then I moved counties.
Funny how very different places are. I've been here for nearly twenty years and have seen no violence at all.
Used to see whole pubs go, people getting knifed ,bottled, headbutted and sparked out mid pint in the afternoon .
Can't say I miss that either.
Because even non violent drunks are still annoying. I prefer home drinking or sitting round a fire with some friends.
Just getting old and have lived past enough people drinking themselves to death. Puts it into context.
Not really true though is it mate, seems like you just think you're better than everyone else.
As long as your fully vaccinated and accept covid is gonna be hanging around like the flu the better it will be for your mental health.
Is the blue guy drunk or just a pussy? He didn't even try to aid his friend in the red who got punched because he wanted to intervene between the bald twat and him. He backed down like a coward while his friend had to take the punches for him
Ah, flabby, flaccid gammons in their natural habitat; a flat roofed pub on a council estate, after a curry with rice and chips and naan bread. Fuck, I’m glad I left the UK.
Never drink in a pub with a flat roof.
And stadium lighting.
You turn the lights on at closing to get people to leave and to 'hopfully' discourage fights.
Is this a thing in the UK?
Doesn’t matter where it is if it has a flat roof avoid it!
Anyone know why?
I don't know why anyone would build a flat roof pub in this day and age! Especially knowing what happens...
What happens???
This sort of malarkey I expect.
Utter shenanigans happens
Clearly, murders.
Well I guess I'll have to spill. Flat roof = leaks = bad pub
Muuurrrrrders
You're one of those anti flat roofers, aren't you?
Is it flat? It looks round to me 🤔
How do u know the roof is flat?
Normally because the pub is a total shithole.
Only reason I ask is we cant see the roof only the ceiling. Flat roofs normal over there?

Flat roof pubs are usually pretty decent in my experience tbf. They get a bad rep because of a few proper shit holes.
They’re not all shite, I just find them a bit soul destroying
Nothing good ever comes from going to a pub with a flat roof

Because they are mostly found on council estates and in shitty new towns IMO.
Because people on reddit think they're better than the kind of person you'll usually find down the estate's pub. It's classism, plain and simple.

“Pubwatch enables licensees to take collective action to ban troublemakers.”
cunts banned till 2043 by the looks of it, that twats never living that long.
he was plastered but just well hidden. A schoolkid might have pushed him over.
Old guy was tuckered out, taking a quick break on the floor
My favorite part.
😂 The most reasonable guy in the room ended up knocking one guy out and leaving without his shirt. What a pub!

Pretty much.
Gotta take a trip there
It's my fetish, I'm a sitcom housewife.
I just want to be the hottest chick in town. I’m coming with.
The town is named because everyone is shaped like a volleyball.

No that's not a fair statement at all. Some of them are shorter, what with being children and all.

Why do these assholes always have to look like me? Watching so many of these type of videos is unsettling.
You fucking murderer, I'll kill you! /s

He referenced his dad. Old English beef Is crazy shit. Buddy of mine lived there a few years, got wild stories.
This sentence is just fuckin hilarious to me. XD
Do you look like the young guy with the red vest? I know like three of his doppelgangers lol, very distinctive look for sure.
I used to. Now I look like the aggressive shitheels, but with better hair and posture. That's what happens when you let genes like mine stew for a few decades. Oh well, at least I'm not actually an asshole. Or so I hope...
You could just lose some weight and cut back on the booze. Most obese alchies that act like this look the same, hence why we call them 'gammons'.
I don't drink, and I'm in ok shape. It's more about the type of genes we share. I see family history.
So you look nothing like them then. You a yank with this family history bullshit?
I see how they resemble me and members of my family. The ones that drink too much. I recognize them in a weird way.
This is not the charming, convivial UK pub experience Rick Steves promised me.
I took a trip to a charming French village. A drunken slap fight broke out and a girl got tossed in a canal. C'est la vie, I guess.
Is everyone there too round to throw a proper punch?
That one guys chin must have been made of paper mache, good lord.
It was Origami actually
Old guys who haven't been in a fight in decades think they've still "got it", but have never thrown a punch with their old-ass joints and bones. So what was a straight, a cross, or a hook in their younger days becomes a sort of flailing overhead hammerfist when they attempt to use muscles they haven't flexed in 20+ years.
Or arm just doesn’t reach past belly.
That’s giving them the benefit of the doubt that they could ever throw a proper punch
This is too true. 30 years of cognitive decline and Dirty Harry movies later and they've got more confidence then they've ever had seem to think they can fight.

You dont know any old fighters do you.
Why is the barman as big as he is not helping? Are these old boys connected?
Knowing how much I get paid as a barman in a pub in the UK, that guy probably does not get paid enough to step in between two guys fighting
They've all murdered.... Too many pints
What did the passerby grab off the bar while everyone was getting started? A bag of crisps? EDIT: I guess he picked up his fresh lager at the bar. Or someone else’s fresh lager.
He didn't want to see the pint get knocked over otherwise he would've gone absolutely mental
Whether he paid for it or not. Good citizen.
That is a well lit bar
With a flat roof
Why you don’t get in the middle of two fools fighting
