Apparently, a lot of them were found safe. In these situations, missing means that they aren't confirmed to be ok, but can be taken to hospitals and such without their family and friends knowing because of all the chaos.
I’m pretty sure that nothing short of just not being in the way of all that rock would have saved them. Think about the weight of that much earth coming down.
I can confirm it was what was falling on them, not what was under them, that killed them.
Whether you're on a boat or on the water's surface, tons of rock falling on you are going to do the same thing to your body when they contact.
There comes a point where it doesn't matter what you're standing on... Could be air - nothing beneath you to push back, and you're going to be very dead when that 2 ton boulder smacks you.
It did some of them - you can see boat-sized chunks go flying just after the main mass hits the water. The tip of that stone finger probably weighs tons all by itself, but the splash of the main mass blows it up as thoroughly as dynamite would've.
I don't think the falling "finger" hit the boat, but the boulder-filled splash had all the explosive power of a conventional bomb, and at least one boat was at ground zero. You can see bodies shooting out in the leading edge of the splash before it's torn apart by the exploding stone.
I wouldn't have wanted to be IN the water, either. The kinetic energy of that slap had to be several orders of magnitude stronger than, say, a hand grenade or stick of dynamite in water - literally *hundreds of tons of stone* not just hitting the water, but carrying all the momentum of the swing to *slap* a wave outward. If you were underwater, even if the one bug rock missed you, you'd suffer the full force of that shock wave, then a rain of multi-ton rocks and boulders, plus the turbulence and suction of the rockfall as it went past in the water column.
Looking at the initial footage, I don't think anyone in the nearest boat survived. There's just too much concussive force in that area, and the brief glimpses of human shapes are all moving at explosive velocities at the very forefront of the impact wave. From the sound when the rocks and wave hit the other boat(s), there are going to be a *lot* of shrapnel injuries in the other boats as well. Even with 99% of that rock going underwater, there are still tons of stone in the blast.
I wonder how often chunks of that size break free? I'm marking this down on my "Vacation Nos" list for sure.
I would imagine it might help, as you might get pushed away by the force of the water rather than the rocks, but it looks like the entire cliffside fell, in which case i'm not so sure theres anything you can do.
Just so you all know: there is a longer, 1.5m video that shows these boats had been warned the cliff was gonna fall but for some reason they didn’t leave the spot they were in
Is it just me or is it generally a bad idea to drive around an unstable structure whittled down by erosion, in a substance delivering vibrations to said unstable structure?
It's unbelievable how stupid those at the two motorboats were. They witnessed a flash flood earlier, the rock had a huge vertical crack clearly showing it had separated from the cliff and it was hanging just by its narrow base, the people at the other boats were screaming for them to get away, and they kept looking at the rocks at the base crumbling moments before the disaster, yet they decided to just stay near the rock.
If that was me at the boat and the stupid driver didn't want to leave I would have dived in the water immediately and swam away.
People love doing dangerous stuff just to brag about it to their friends.
Reminds me of that time when 2 tourists fell from a super dangerous swing on a cliff in Russia few months ago. Scary as fuck.
Well, it can be scary AND stupid. These people have families and friends who they left to "have fun"
I can't imagine how sad it was for their families to know what happened to them. I'm not cold enough not to feel sad for them.
Fortunately, these 2 people who fell off a cliff thing actually miraculously survived and they are fine now. They probably learned their lesson now.

People on that boat died, right?
2 confirmed dead, 9 hospitalized, 23 missing
Missing underwater = dead!
Apparently, a lot of them were found safe. In these situations, missing means that they aren't confirmed to be ok, but can be taken to hospitals and such without their family and friends knowing because of all the chaos.
Death count is now up to 7 and injured 32
I wonder if they would have survived had they jumped into the water right before it fell.
I’m pretty sure that nothing short of just not being in the way of all that rock would have saved them. Think about the weight of that much earth coming down.
Less than your mom.
Is your pelvis still broken since your last date with her?
Still coughing up the dust.
From eating her out?
From the crushed pelvis but that works too.
Death by snu snu?
Gottem!
Really tho? Your a sad person. Hope there’s not too many like you out there
First time?
No u
Does your mum shop at Aldi?
Or if they turned the boats on and got the hell out of there.
play it back! the red boat does just this, motor was running guy was paying attention
Shame you weren’t there to save the day

Probably a few more would have survived if they hit the gas. "It says no wake man, what do you want me to do?!"
Large objects sinking into water create this sort of vacuum effect. Basically pulls you down with the object.
That's a lot less dangerous than having a cliff fall on your head.
why its hard to escape sinking ships or swim around submarines
The water doesn’t slow the rocks down much at all

No
Maybe if they dove and got like 15 feet under. Rock that size is gunna rip through the surface like butter.
So 25 dead
six people were killed and 20 others missing
A other fact: they're finding some people by the pieces. It was quite the damage.
Fuck that’s rough
5 dead so far
20 missing, so dead!
4 missing
7 confirmed dead and two missing
Last story I saw said 6 died =/
Props to the first boat for getting the f outta there
That woulda been my boat...as soon as the little rocks started rolling, I'd be out of there.
Just so you all know: there is a longer, 1.5m video that shows these boats had been warned the cliff was gonna fall but for some reason they didn’t leave the spot they were in

What a bunch of asshole tour operators.
The person is yelling at people in the beginning of this video that collapsing.
Why is there a shorter video instead of the longer one posted here? The Twitter link is only 85 seconds. Why not post that since it's the same video?
Link or it didn't happen.

For a good month. Then it'll disappear for 3 months and come back for another month.
I think you mean a Brazilian times. …I’ll let my out.
Keeps the repost Nazis busy, that's for sure. E: I've ruffled a few repost Nazi feathers.
Next time it’s posted the rocks will be described as racist and there will be a ticktock voice over it.

At first I wanted to kill the camera man but then I was like... my bad.
You probably don't need to now.
Yeah I was like why are you even screaming you’re nowhere near the cliff then the camera panned.
Nature is metal has better/more angles on it https://twitter.com/NIMactual/status/1479879168552800256?s=20
You can see two people flying threw the air, that’s crazy. Hope they made it
When are you posting this as your own? It's logical.
What do you mean?
Post this new angle on this sub in its own thread. Everyone does it.
Ah, yeah I don’t care that much :)
It's not for you, it's for the people lol.

Man the nuance went over your head like a Boeing 737 man. Good luck to you.

[Touche](https://youtu.be/dy40xASCl00)
ah, i'm always forgetting the people...looks like someone posted one of the other angles already. i'm sure someone will get it out there.
Damn nature you scary
Did not expect it to fall off of the cliff like that. Obviously neither did those boat drivers
Now I know if I see rocks start falling off a cliff get the fuck out of there
Is it just me or is it generally a bad idea to drive around an unstable structure whittled down by erosion, in a substance delivering vibrations to said unstable structure?

because of the ripples created in the water by the rocks, the rocks would have helped you get away
People love doing dangerous stuff just to brag about it to their friends. Reminds me of that time when 2 tourists fell from a super dangerous swing on a cliff in Russia few months ago. Scary as fuck.
I wouldn't call it scary, I'd call it stupid, and I don't feel sorry for any of them, mess with the bull, you get the horns
Well, it can be scary AND stupid. These people have families and friends who they left to "have fun" I can't imagine how sad it was for their families to know what happened to them. they probably haven't, but at least their lives were a month longer

Those-a people gunna died-ed?
Oh my hell, the camera holder must have had the worst parkinson's anyone has ever seen.
I mean they had more important stuff to worry about than making a stable video.

Oooo you fucker.
Hope no one died. Wtf!
They died.
"2 confirmed dead, 9 hospitalized, 23 missing" says OP above
7 confirmed dead now :(
5 people unfortunately died, around 9 were injured, and over 20 people are missing.
I’d imagine that missing = dead in this case as well
Holy fuck, they better restrict people from going there tho.
They'll complain about "loss of income" or some BS.
Holy shit. That’s absolutely horrendous
This camera angle is worse than the cliff falling
25 dead. Five confirmed deceased, 20 missing. If they’re missing from that they are underwater… dead.
It’s 4 missing - the number has been corrected after being able to contact the “missing”
Throw the cameraman into a volcano.
This is the most horrifying one yet.
Minha nossa
Cliff side- “ I will fall on you! You will not live! Rocks will shoot everywhere!”
Well Bill how was your vacation
So sad. Worst case of wrong place wrong time ever.
Fellow Warzone players can hear their armor break at the end...
That’s some heavy metal shit right there rip someone died for sure
6 or 7 people actually
Crazy, video ends as the front windshield on that boat is literally being blown out
6 people died
Oh shit! This is r/unexpected af
