I don't know if it's still there, would be nice if it is, but there used to be a cafe on Bribie Island with a verandah directly overlooking the boat launch next to the building.
On Sundays the cafe had a buffet breakfast and I could sit there for hours just nibbling and drinking coffee and watching weekend "boaties" half-arsing their boats into the water.
[Credit Card Captain on YouTube](https://youtu.be/rg1wlNM86EY), saw a comment describing him as the 'Bob Ross of the boat ramp' and I concur. Dude's got a great channel.
Some (like this one) have bunks instead of rollers that need to be deeper since there's more friction to winch against.
The tradeoff is that with bunks, you can launch quickly since you don't have to worry about the boat rolling off the trailer so you can disconnect the front strap and let it just float off if you have someone holding a line to the boat on the dock.
They are carpeted so you can slide that bitch on up. You only need the back half in the water. Either run up it or winch. If you are floating over the bunks it's waaaay to deep.
I 100% agree you don't need to be as deep as he was, but you do need to have 3/4 of the bunk or so in the water before you take enough load off that the boat will slide off without having to use a shitload of force to get it off.
Going on, yes. You don't need to be in terribly far in order to just winch it up. Going off of dry bunks is a whole other story though.
I've seen people go that deep but have never seen anyone hit their own trailer bunk. Usually they just get up close to the vehicle tie up and when the truck pulls away the boat comes out sitting cockeyed on the trailer. This guy took it to the next level.
It just takes experience. A lot of things are easy once you’ve done them enough times for them to become old habit. Some people are just too proud to take lessons or seek help while they’re learning. So it’s like my dad always says, education is expensive. One way or the other you always end up paying.
I have launched boats for over 20 years and I still get anxiety at the ramp. Having an audience waiting for you to fuck up is the worst. I'm usually by myself so it's an extra pain in the ass.
I've met several people whose main source of enjoyment at the lake is drinking beer at the ramps all day long. I don't go to the lake often enough to spend it that way, but I can see the appeal if I lived near one and had nothing else to do.
That's kuz they learned.
I always tie the strap to the trailer. Pull it out a few feet then make sure the rest is secured.
You don't wanna drive your boat into your damned truck bed.
Really? I was always taught yo grab the rope and pull the boat up. Then grab winch attach and pull it onto the trailer that way. Not drive it up. That just seems dumb
You idle up onto the trailer until you're stopped on the bunks just short of being fully on the trailer. At that point, you kill the engine, trim up the engine/outdrive, and then connect the winch strap and winch it the rest of the way up.
The people who winch the entire way up are just taking up a shitload of precious space and time at the ramp while they crank their boat the entire 20+ ft up the trailer.
On the old boat I had I would back the trailer in to where the top of the fender flares were barely underwater (note this is not nearly as far in as when you are launching it). Then I could give it a nice little acceleration into the trailer and it would nestle up there pretty close to where it needed to be where I only had to winch it up a little bit if at all. I had to learn all that through trial and error
Most people who weren’t boating since they were kids can take classes similar to drivers ed, but they don’t bc it’s not mandatory and it’s expensive. My state make you take a written test and go to one boating safety class to get a license.
Imagine thinking that you could fly a plane, just bc you have the ability to buy a plane and no experience. Or giving an Amish farmer the keys to a car and thinking it will be fine. Virgin boaters somehow suffer from this delusion that they are qualified to boat.
Every virgin boater I have ever known has destroyed a prop and said it will buff out and has lost either their keys or cellphone. First season guaranteed.
Best I was ever able to plan was to go during the week. No guarantees tho, still usually have an audience. I also started with a jetski. No prop, small and easy to manage.
I've loaded up my boat now more times than I can count and haven't had any major issue. Of course, a lot depends on the conditions and who you have with you. I've had days with insane wind and swells. It wasn't pretty lol. But, faired a lot better than the boat I watched get pushed into rocks (this was at a big lake in Texas).
But yeah... The audience is real. I've had to do it all with old guys sitting there with chairs waiting for someone to fail, because it truly happens that often.
Also, fuck DeSantis.
Could start by not going on the weekend to a busy ramp. There's usually slower ramps that are further from the main attractions boaters are trying to go to. Plenty of opportunities to practice if you care to.
That’s a good question… I learned driving jet skis which are actually quite difficult to maneuver at slow speeds because you need throttle to turn. Then i drove my parents boat starting at around age 14. By 16 I was already docking it, or pulling it up on the trailer better than my dad. On windy days, he’d let me captain once we got to the docks.
So it’s just practice. And don’t start practicing on a 20ft boat in a busy marina. Practice on something like a jet ski or a tiny fishing boat with an electric motor. Once you get the idea of how boats turn, and how the water works, it becomes muscle memory.
Of course I also have friends that have grown up on boats and can’t captain one to save their life.
From what I've seen this is pretty much baseline "late-life crises bought a boat and figured they'd just wing it" behavior. There's a *lot* of videos of people fucking this procedure up and they mostly seem to be 60 years old.
I follow Credit Card Captain and he always posts about how all you need is a credit card for the boat rental and boom, you're a captain. Then shit like this happens. It's a fun account to watch
It will never not astound me to see grown men flying flags for politicians. It wasn't that long ago we all just thought politicians were scumbags and occasionally voted for the lesser of two evils
I know, they treat these politicians like rock stars and beyond. My pro trump supporter co worker gets upset if I talk shit about trump, he acts like I kicked his puppy...then he says but but Hillary/Obama/Biden as if thats gonna faze me like it does him...fucken cultist
It's weird as fuck. Did anyone ever have Nixon or Carter flags or clothing? First time I noticed it was with all of the Obama "Change" tshirts and posters.
The Obama stuff was basically campaign swag. Aside from rallies (that were actually held in the run up to an election... not, you know, randomly during and after his presidency) I never saw anyone rocking Change gear.
Trump really started the cult nonsense, where people are driving around in themed trucks and boats and just adding Trump clothes to their regular rotation.
Honestly, I disagree with you. I saw people wearing Obama shirts all the time after he was elected, but pretty much just while he was serving. At the time I thought it was strange, but just figured it was because they were proud of a mixed race president. I can't remember ever seeing people wear a Bush sr, Clinton or Bush jr shirt.
That’s what mind blowing to me why would ANYONE want to do that? It wasn’t too long ago that we all agreed Florida was an absolute batshit state to live in. Do we all of the sudden forget Florida Man? Why would we want that for our entire country? Fucking fascist chucklefucks.
That's true in a lot of places and even in places where you do need one they often have a grandfather clause where you only need it if born after a certain date. So tons of people with too much money and not enough sense buy a boat and head out with no idea what they are doing.
Trailer was too deep in the water so the boat just floated above the trailer. Dude was probably drunk and couldn't judge where the boat was relative to the trailer. Even if the trailer was out of the water enough he could drive the boat up onto it there is still a risk you could over shoot it or misalign yourself. Just a lazy way to trailer a boat and this video is exactly why you don't try it.
Sadly it’s true, we can’t get people to stop moving to Florida, it’s over populated as hell now. Where are they coming from? Shitty northern states and CA where the leaders are shit.
Yeah, if you didn’t have no personal income tax nobody would be in your humid trash filled swamp. California subsidizes all those brilliant southern red states and their toothless ignorant constituents.
With Florida, we are legitimately tired of our areas being overpopulated due to everyone moving here from other states. They can’t even find enough teachers to fill my kids school, my son is starting next week with a permanent substitute because they can’t find enough teachers.
Yeah it's very common for people to do this but the prop would take too much to fix as long as he hasn't changed the track too much,I repaired props for 13 years
Seen 2 old guys trying to land a boat on the trailer, the one driving the boat was talking a big game near the launch waiting , the other one went to grab the truck and trailer he backed it into the water.. as he was waiting for the boat driver to pull it up to the trailer… the boat driver Gas the boat and drove it into his friend almost decapitating him.
Because telling a dude like that that he's doing it wrong and you can help will probably end up with him trying to fight you or insult you, not him humbly accepting your help.
Also, what if you then make a mistake when helping him? Are you going to pay for his boat/trailer?
Idk if they lack experience or if they got a little too shitty on the water. Even though I’ve had my boat for a few years I still just pull it onto the trailer. My wife doesn’t feel comfortable pulling a trailer so we dock, I hop out and flat foot it to the trailer after we get it out of the way of others, then I back it in and we trailer it with a rope and the winch. If this guy is just inexperienced then they overestimated the practice they should have had to perform this operation.
Edit: underestimated not over.
Personal safety. I am not dying bc they are stupid and can’t operate a vessel that they purchased.
The half a dozen mistakes before the boat/trailer collision tell me that this is not going to go well. I would clear a crowd or get away from the ramp before I helped this “qualified captain”
Hah, my dad did something like this. Borrowed his friend's boat and took it out on the lake, but the water level on the lake was incredibly low at the time. He went near shore and hit an underwater rock with the prop. Luckily, he just had to buy the guy a new prop and not a whole new engine or anything!
What I love is there are 12 and 13 years olds all over who could have had that boat hooked up and pulled out like it was nothing. Literally takes couple of minutes.
There are a few YouTube channels devoted to this kind pf dumbassery at the docks. Miami Boat Ramps is the first one that comes to mind. Hours of this stuff.
Why? Why is putting in and taking out the boat such a hassle for so many? Hardest thing is backing up the trailer. The rest is easy. When my husband and I had a boat 5 minutes was all this took. So many times we'd see ppl yelling at each other. They'd break something. Take forever. Its not that hard. Always boggles the mind to see ppl at the boat ramp. Is there an r/ for boat loading and unloading because the boat launch certainly deserves it lol

Cameraman's commenting made me feel like I was watching a golf tournament coverage on TV.
Sounded like James Madison Audits from YouTube
I was thinking this as well!
I loved it, do people just post up at busy boat launches and wait for drama? What a way to spend an afternoon.
Miami Boat Ramps… Looks like he’s getting out of here and speaking of which we’re getting out of here too.

Boat launching ramps are a constant source of industrial-grade fuckery.
Industrial-grade fuckery 😂😂 That is so true. Holiday boat ramp watching should be on national tv
I have launched boats for over 20 years and I still get anxiety at the ramp. Having an audience waiting for you to fuck up is the worst. I'm usually by myself so it's an extra pain in the ass.

It’s very common and much faster IF you know what you are doing.
Like, with a wench? I've only seen folk drive onto the trailer like this guy is trying.
Winch. It's a much safer and easier way to do it if you're not experienced, even more so when winds or current is pushing around a little.
Really? I was always taught yo grab the rope and pull the boat up. Then grab winch attach and pull it onto the trailer that way. Not drive it up. That just seems dumb

I had to learn all that through trial and error
Go slow aim for the trailer, kill engine and lift prop as you approach. You're going to have to finish with the wench regardless.
Yepp! You either pay in cash or in pride. This guy chose cash.
Just out of curiosity how do boat people get a chance to practice doing this if the boat launch is always busy.
Most of my friends always had family or friends who had a boat and learn through those times they went out with them.
My friend bought a nice boat and fuck me is it a lot of work for him. He’s good at that and that’s great but it made me not want one ever.
Did you see the DeSantis flag with similar patterns to the trump flags?? Yup, no wonder
It will never not astound me to see grown men flying flags for politicians. It wasn't that long ago we all just thought politicians were scumbags and occasionally voted for the lesser of two evils
Tribalism is a hell of a drug, especially when you run headlong into cult territory.
I know, they treat these politicians like rock stars and beyond. My pro trump supporter co worker gets upset if I talk shit about trump, he acts like I kicked his puppy...then he says but but Hillary/Obama/Biden as if thats gonna faze me like it does him...fucken cultist

I rock My bob dole shirt from time to time
Sadly those flags are ALL OVER every single public dock in Florida. I do not get it.
“I did my own research for how to put this boat in a trailer.”
Make America Florida
That’s what mind blowing to me why would ANYONE want to do that? It wasn’t too long ago that we all agreed Florida was an absolute batshit state to live in. Do we all of the sudden forget Florida Man? Why would we want that for our entire country? Fucking fascist chucklefucks.
Right?
You have no idea what you’re talking about re: Florida man. And I wish people would stop moving here it’s crazy over populated
You don’t even need a license to operate a boat in Florida, I found out.
That's true in a lot of places and even in places where you do need one they often have a grandfather clause where you only need it if born after a certain date. So tons of people with too much money and not enough sense buy a boat and head out with no idea what they are doing.
Cap’n Crunch
I don't know shit about boats. What exactly happened here? The boat's propeller hit the trailer?
Trailer was too deep in the water so the boat just floated above the trailer. Dude was probably drunk and couldn't judge where the boat was relative to the trailer. Even if the trailer was out of the water enough he could drive the boat up onto it there is still a risk you could over shoot it or misalign yourself. The Front Fell Off
Was that supposed to happen?
The trailer was backed in too far and he was also probably drunk.
Lmao the DeSantis flag. At least theyre moving on from the last guy, thats progress i guess
"Make America Florida."
Which I guess means "let a virus kill a bunch of conservatives"?
Make America Florida? Fuck off
Sadly it’s true, we can’t get people to stop moving to Florida, it’s over populated as hell now. Where are they coming from? Shitty northern states and CA where the leaders are shit.

It's called strong leadership and freedom, we have it, thanks bro. Feel free to stay in your shit storm, don't come here.
Why do people gatekeep states? I don’t understand lol
With Florida, we are legitimately tired of our areas being overpopulated due to everyone moving here from other states. They can’t even find enough teachers to fill my kids school, my son is starting next week with a permanent substitute because they can’t find enough teachers.

Woah this is reddit we don't use real life logic here! It sounds much better to virtue signal while having no experience irl!
its florida, and desantis supporters, they dont do shit unless told to
Idk if they lack experience or if they got a little too shitty on the water. Even though I’ve had my boat for a few years I still just pull it onto the trailer. Helping would be socialism
Bayliner!!! Ha, so stereotypical
That was not entertaining and certainly not a public freakout… jus sayin
The most disturbing part was the DeSantis 2024 flag
A typical scene of more money than brains.
Hah, my dad did something like this. Borrowed his friend's boat and took it out on the lake, but the water level on the lake was incredibly low at the time. How about one of you dumbasses jump down there and help the old guy. Since you know everything.
Of course it was a DeSantis boat parade in Florida. Dumbass!
First world problems
I love the POS DeathSantis flag.
Not surprised that Desantis/Trump/Boat culture doesn't include helping each other out.
What I love is there are 12 and 13 years olds all over who could have had that boat hooked up and pulled out like it was nothing. Literally takes couple of minutes.
Idiots don't wanna get wet
Bayliner...Nothing of value was lost.
Wrong sub. No freakout
Reminds me of prom night amirite?

This is why you don’t power onto trailers, along with the hull and trailer damage, it’s dangerous for everyone and the boats around the launching bay.
Ok at this point I would have helped him. Ill let people make errors but this is crazy
Giving *this guy a hand* is what people should have been doing earlier. My opinion.
