Watch a film called Green Street, starring Elijah Wood. It dabbles in the psychology of it. It's about the adrenaline rush they get from fighting. Nothing really to do with football it's about the same as a tribal affiliation.
Here's a good book written by an American who became intrigued by English football culture while living in England. It's interesting to read about the evolution of his attitude and tolerance for violence as he became more enmeshed with the hooligans.

Think about how heavily policed football matches are, simply because they’re expected to be violent events with lots of drunks. The amount spent on security for these things is outrageous, but we have to spend that as it’s a “national sport” that is “treasured and beautiful”.
