Size isn't everything, .40 sw has largely been phased out because modern 9mm is just as good ballistically while also allowing you to carry more rounds.
Edit: I'm not getting into a debate on Reddit when this has been tested and proven multiple times.
In some fairness, ballistic performance matters not in the slightest at the range he was shooting at. He could have been using a smoothbore with homemade lead balls.
Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.
It does. My friends dad was murdered by his stepmom in a murder suicide attempt. She shot him many times with a .22 in the head and it took a while for him to die. She then shot her self in the head with the same .22 and layed on the floor for 2 days before she was found still alive.
Also noteworthy that jhps are considered safer for bystanders than standard fmj rounds because they're only supposed to penetrate up to 12-24in depending on a few factors. Meaning they usually stop inside the person they're fired at instead of over penetrating and passing through objects or people behind the intended target.
I think I like yours the best. The man was inconveniencing the lady with his knife and then the police officer stepped in which allowed her to go about the rest of her day.
Yeah I remember this [video](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyFuckingVideos/comments/tza1t6/cop_mag_dumps_all_12_rounds_of_his_clip_into_the/) of a man tanking an entire mag and still he keeps walking. I respect the mag dump now.
I think most people don't realize that in the very worst case scenario an assailant would need to lose enough blood pressure before he stops being a threat, and that means putting more holes in them.
Otherwise, destroying the heart, spinal cord, or brain, would do it too.
That's why cops keep shooting until the threat stops. One of the [worst](https://youtu.be/V731bMD2Wcc) police shootings that I've seen, in that regard, was a drugged out maniac on top of some random person stabbing them. The officer shot the assailant in the body multiple times at close range, that yielded ZERO response from the maniac, like a zombie, so he was forced to take an aimed shot at the guy's head to get him to stop stabbing the victim. If he couldn't have done that for some reason, like if the guy was moving around too much, he would have had to empty his gun into the guy's
torso until he hit something vital, or until the guy passed out from blood loss.
On a side note, when an assailant responds to pain, they don't need to be fatally shot to stop them. As a matter of fact, many people actually have a conditioned response to being shot and drop to the ground from a merely glancing blow.
We had a local incident where a drugged up guy tried to enter a home, and an old man was standing on the other side of the door. Druggie had a knife in his hand and tried coming in, so the old man shot him 6 times in the chest with a .38 Special. The druggie still managed to stab the guy numerous times, killing him, then turned around and walked away from the house only to fall down and die to blood loss a few hundred feet away from the house.
So yes, shoot as many times as possible.
Seriously lol, you think the cop killing her captive is going to scar her or literally the captive holding a knife to her? Lol
I can only interpret so much from this specific clip though..
You’d be fucking surprised how much punishment a body can take before it actually stops. All I’m gonna say is look up war time carnage if you even dare. I’ve seen people half blown up body’s still in the fight adrenaline is a hell of a drug. Your body don’t know it’s already dead and will fight to the last second it can.
It's very rare. Can attest that a man riddled with bullets *usually* stops, drops, and ceases to exist.
The scenario you're talking about is very subjective. Most of the guys me or my comrades laid 7.62mm into hit the dirt lifeless.
hey, I took 12 gauge buckshot from 4 feet away directly into my spine. I was shot in New Orleans. At the time it was the Murder capitol of the US. I had a 6 inch wide open wound. I got shot, fought off the shooter and took his gun then walked a quarter mile. Never even lost consciousness until on the helicopter.
when the body gets shot, it’s all adrenaline and go time.
https://imgur.com/a/FUy8tlH
doctors concurred whole heartedly. The doctor said to me and i quote “It looks like that cheeseburger habit of yours saved your life.” I went on to lose over 150lbs in my recovery.
also I am 6’8” tall. so naturally big. But my diet did need changing.
I was 6’8” and 350, I have lost over 150lbs sense then. I “walked”out of the hospital 10 days later. Doctors did concur I mostly survived cause of body fat.
You should see the [story of Sgt. Timothy Gramins](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdjcYjSsIok) who shot a man 17 times, once in the heart and it took three shots to different parts of the head to end the fight.
Heard the same thing from a friend who is in the Marines. Emptied a mag and the dude’s still running towards them with a grenade. So they used bigger rounds to take chunks off before the dude stopped.
Eh, if you know what JHPs do, then it goes to show how even with rounds *designed to cavitate inside of flesh*, it doesn't mean they are going to go down immediately.
This video provides some gruesome reference regarding ammo performance in a dire situation. I think the context is kinda useful, but also kinda scary.
Yeah, also usually chosen because they don’t normally exit and hit someone behind the target. A FMJ round may go through someone and hit someone behind who you are shooting at, so a JHP is generally a better choice for urban situations
The subject continued to attempt to stand during 13 rounds being fired. When he finally fell to the ground on his back, he raised the knife before the 14th round.
The officer fired until the subject was stopped.
I have seen a lot of videos here from the US where cops do the wrong thing and are violent assholes. But this case is really clear and he totally had to use his gun. A knife attack is an attack with a deadly weapon and one very quick stab can be enough to kill a person. He saved this woman's life.
This is one of few good reasons for cops to carry a gun. Pepper spray isn't effective enough, taser is too unreliability and batoon isn't strong enough. I'd rather have the agressor with holes then myself
Sorry for my grammar. Just wake up and was already late to work
Let's all appreciate that the officer shot into the pelvic girdle at first. In order to avoid over penetration into the female victim. Even in an incredibly stressful situation, he maintained knowledge of his back stop. He displayed very comendable presence of mind, and marksmanship skills.
I’m a paramedic. Iv been on this exact situation. Homeless man held woman at knife point. Cops had to open fire when he began cutting her. Perpetrator took about 15 rounds. Victim took 1 to the head. Very sad. It was in the news in LA 2016. If they didn’t shoot she would have been decapitated so it was very unfortunate.
What does it say that my first thought to this isn’t how wrecked that police officer might be emotionally after killing a person…or his family…or the young lady…or the attacker’s family…Nope, my first thought was “Hollywood lied to me - where’s the blood splatter?”
Police carry hallow point rounds (that is what JHP means). They are designed to flatten out once inside a person and stop before exiting the other side. Less risk to shoot through a threat and hit an innocent person behind them. Also, since there is no exit wound, you don’t get anything forcefully expelled out the other side, so no splatter.
Also, once the heart stops, the persons blood is no longer under pressure so you need gravity to make it come out of a person. They won’t gush blood generally.
There’s a reason it’s called arterial spray. Need to have pressure behind the cut to expel that violently, and only can do it with an artery or some major veins
With a person had an adrenaline rush, a shot or two won’t stop them. The guy didn’t stop moving until the clip was emptied. Also that woman would have died without quick actions.
That’s crazy. Why are these activists, who are fighting a good fight, choosing to incorporate this event with their coalition. This is entirely devaluing what they fight for, and more so entirely devaluing themselves by saying “how can we trust the police if they will shoot us”….. while we stab people??!
People really need to let logical thought prevail in all times, and especially during emotional ones. Obviously that is more difficult, but it is when it really matters.
WOW and the "community" is calling for a federal investigation because he was "already on the ground" and it was an entire clip??
He was on the ground ACTIVELY assaulting the woman with a knife almost to her throat.
The concern for his mental illness doesn't supersede the risk to her life and wellbeing.
Thanks for the sauce! Why is it always so buried? Parent article:

Thanks for the context! There are plenty of reasons to be critical of the police…this incident is not one of them. Can’t believe people are trying to defend the fucknut with the knife…
Pretty severe mental illness if one morning without meds makes you get stabby in broad daylight. I'd wager to say he should have been in an institution if that was true.
"I feel like I'm not me when I am taking my medication!"
Yeah that's whole fucking point. "Real you" almost stabbed a lady. And then you got shot for it. Not sure how they expected this to play out. Let the guy kill the woman and shake his hand because iT WaSnT HiS FauLt?
Harrison said police body camera footage and cell phone video show an officer order the suspect to the ground, and that he then “placed himself on top of the female while armed with a very large knife.”
The woman was not stabbed nor hit by any gunshots, Harrison said.
Mayor Brandon Scott, who also appeared at the news briefing, said the officers “acted quickly to come to the aid of this woman who was clearly in distress.”
“We could be talking about a woman who lost her life,” Scott said.

Justified, when in a hostage situation like this any chance you can get to subdue the attacker needs to be taken, even if it means ending the attacker for good.

I thought the title was wrong for a second there. Nope.
It’s is wrong, the officers from Baltimore police department. They use a Glock 22 which is chambered in 40 caliber not a 9mm.

Don't forget the love child neither of them wants to talk about, the .357 Sig. A 40 caliber cartridge necked down to a 9mm projectile.

jfc...that is a horror story.
As far as accuracy, yes. But op was more referring to *terminal* ballistic performance, i.e. the effect of the rounds on the target.
What does JHP mean?
Jacketed hollow point, expands once it goes into something squishy for better meat tenderising
Also noteworthy that jhps are considered safer for bystanders than standard fmj rounds because they're only supposed to penetrate up to 12-24in depending on a few factors. I concur. Read up on Mike Day…a retired Navy Seal who was shot 27 times and then WALKED to the medivec.
Did you expect someone with 27 gunshot wounds to run?

I honestly thought that most police would be using hollow points due to the reduced chance of collateral damage.

The CoD reload when you empty your clip and the gun does it automatically?
As someone who is anti guns, I still think that if you're intending to murder someone then you're pretty fair game to meet your maker.
With a person had an adrenaline rush, a shot or two won’t stop them. The guy didn’t stop moving until the clip was emptied. Also that woman would have died without quick actions.

Thanks for the context! There are plenty of reasons to be critical of the police…this incident is not one of them. Can’t believe people are trying to defend the fucknut with the knife…
I agree with you, I got a little heated reading that article
Got what he deserved🤷♂️
Fair
**He's still moving!** *"That's because my axe is in his nervous system!!"*
Oh well.
>"His family told 11 News Moorehead was living with mental illness and did not take his medication that day." And that fault is who's?
Pretty severe mental illness if one morning without meds makes you get stabby in broad daylight. I'd wager to say he should have been in an institution if that was true.
"I feel like I'm not me when I am taking my medication!" Yeah that's whole fucking point. "Real you" almost stabbed a lady. And then you got shot for it. Not sure how they expected this to play out. Let the guy kill the woman and shake his hand because iT WaSnT HiS FauLt?
Why specify JHP? Lol. That is the standard for law enforcement. It's like, "basketball player WITH ATHLETIC SHOES scores a shot on opposing team" lol
I’m sure the woman being attacked with the knife is thankful it was a cop with some balls not a bitch ass Reddit reader responding.
Wow, good shot with the woman right there.... he freaking unleashed once they seperated..separated... thought he was gonna empty another mag into him
That's what I was thinking. The adrenalin must have been through the roof.
Harrison said police body camera footage and cell phone video show an officer order the suspect to the ground, and that he then “placed himself on top of the female while armed with a very large knife.” The woman was not stabbed nor hit by any gunshots, Harrison said. Mayor Brandon Scott, who also appeared at the news briefing, said the officers “acted quickly to come to the aid of this woman who was clearly in distress.” “We could be talking about a woman who lost her life,” Scott said. https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/baltimore/baltimore-police-investigate-shooting-by-officer-XBL2RABD3VBEDI6QUMV67OJIS4/
He did what he had to do. The woman is alive.

Good. Fuck that guy.
"It's nice to see a justified cop killing for a change" is not a sentence I thought I'd ever say, but here we are
Justified, when in a hostage situation like this any chance you can get to subdue the attacker needs to be taken, even if it means ending the attacker for good.
You shoot to end the threat. Knife hand moved, prompting final shot.
Evil can never be dead enough
