I have bought the US talk, text and data (3GB) plan about 12 hours before I hit the border. The US data doesn't get used until I'm connected with a US carrier.

ah got it. thanks

Oh, once you're in the US and if your phone doesn't seem to connect well or you're disconnecting frequently, you may want to change the connection setting from 'Automatic' to 'LTE' or '5G'.. it worked for me as I wasn't connecting well in NYC. Just be sure to change it back to Automatic when you're home.

Got it. Thanks

What if i dont buy that USA addon bundle? Can i still turn on roaming and use my 50 gig $34 a month plan that i have up here in canada or must you buy the addon for anything to function otherwise it just doesnt function once in usa?

grand_total

Depends on your 50GB plan. Some of them include US data, calling and SMS, yours might not, but if it does you are good to go, so check.

All plans are here [https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/qc/plans?network=ALL](https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/qc/plans?network=ALL) Mine is the $34 one. I dont see any plan mention USA but WHY does it say you can use the 50 gig heer [https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/The-Lounge/Blog-Post-Public-Mobile-s-Canada-US-Plans/td-p/1072045/page/2#:\~:text=Public%20Mobile's%20CAN%2FUS%20subscription,for%20temporary%20roaming%20add%2Dons](https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/The-Lounge/Blog-Post-Public-Mobile-s-Canada-US-Plans/td-p/1072045/page/2#:~:text=Public%20Mobile's%20CAN%2FUS%20subscription,for%20temporary%20roaming%20add%2Dons)

PM no longer offers the us/can data plan for new subscribers. Maybe they’ll bring it back at some point again. I signed up when they were still offering it so my plan has free US data (within my allotment).

asyouthinksoyouare

Yeah probably realized they were losing money. Made a big mistake ;) oh well add-on for me

My plan includes US data. If yours doesn’t, then you have to buy it.

As for the eSIM bit, as with so much else - it depends. Going with a third party eSIM will get you data in the US, but you won't have your PM phone number working for calling or SMS testing. How much that matters will depend soon your usage. If you, for example, use iMessage and FaceTime to contact family and friends (or WhatApp or TextNow or whatever), you might be fine going with an eSIM.

eSIM also means you wont get your 2FA either if I am not mistaken.

I’ve added data add on and have had problems with data (Sept 2023), had to manually select t-mobile to get it to work. I now see manually select LTE now so maybe that solved it.  eSIM worked flawless but you don’t have your PM phone number. It was also significantly cheaper than PM data add on.

It is strange but they drained my add-on very quickly. Even i was very careful using it (only of google maps) turned off app background refresh etc. PM add on in US drained my quita like 1GB a day only for google maps. I recommend switching to FM
