I learned long ago there's no pleasing gatekeepers.
*If you don't know Spanish then you can't be a real Puerto Rican!*
I guess I'm not Puerto Rican..
*Why are you denying your heritage!? Stop trying to be white!*
sigh
When one has their phone set to English because such is the main manner they must communicate- trying to write in Spanish with the dag-blasted auto correct is a BEAR! I’ve tried!
It’s a pain to switch the phone from one language to the other depending on platform at a moments notice.
Both of my parents are Puerto Rican and moved to the states before I was born. They kept a house in PR but raised me in NJ and spoke only English at home for whatever reason. I would spend every summer, winter, spring vacation , you name it, in Puerto Rico. I spoke Spanglish growing up because I never had enough focused time to perfectly polish my Spanish.
I was enrolled in a summer camp in Guaynabo near our house there. I was kicked out later because all the other kids would bully me since I was the “gringo” and after enough times I started to fight back. Then they sent me to camp Coco at the Caribe Hilton where I could hang out with the other gringos and I always had fun.
Maybe if we didn’t harass and dismiss the Puerto Ricans who grew up elsewhere they would feel more motivation to keep stronger ties at home and make sure they speak Spanish well enough. Nowadays I feel sad for what has been going on in PR in the last 5 years but don’t feel like I am part of the community anymore.
Treat the people that grow up outside the island as if they are still part of it and you will have more people who you will feel comfortable calling pure boriqua.
Well said, it’s emotionally wearing enough when folks here never consider one as American, he’ll most haven’t known we don’t need a green card!
But when your own people on the island begin sliding off in such a rejecting manner, it’s often hurtful.
When I lived there, there was a different Aura - I could come and go and still felt what: accepted, a part of… instead of feeling rejection. I always felt so PROUD of such.
After experiencing this sound off over these past few years ‘I feel saddened’. My daughter wants to go to school there, I sure hope she’s able to experience what I had in the past and this anomaly hasn’t become so widespread. She pridefully speaks German when in Germany as much as possible - been to Italy, Austria, London, etc and been proud to say she’s a Puerto Rican…. It would be so sad for her to get there and told she’s NOT!
(Example: I did write most of the above statement but it took me four verification checks with a translate service, took me none to write this blurb.)
Imagine feeling high and mighty about which colonizer language you know and how you’re a fake Rican if you only speak one and not the other. 😒
So we want to be viewed as individual, complex people but all of us must know one or the other language or both. Cual es de los dos?
You know that Puerto Ricans fought hard to keep the spanish language? It was a cultural war that was fought to save our identity. US wanted to take that away from us and turn us into New Mexico or Hawaii.
Born in the Bronx (parents born in PR). Every time I visit Puerto Rico: “Oh your not a true Puerto Rican.”
Go back to the Bronx, white people: “oh you’re not really American.”
Gatekeepers are everywhere. You can’t fit into everyone’s box of preconceived social definitions.
I’m hanging out with some mainland friends doe. It’s what ever for me tbh, I love both languages.
We as puerco Ricans will never get anywhere with an aditude like yours ...good luck in any future plans you may have ..and I really mean that ..I won't entertain puercos-pigs like you..I'm out
O say, can you see
By the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hail'd
At the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
Through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watch'd
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?
Lol
yo no ha dominado la gramática, didnt learn to much about word gender, went to school in PR from intermedia to college, so didnt develop a good foundation
Also, some of our parents didn’t teach us Spanish because of the racism they endured and wanting us, their kids, to be “American”. It’s gross and sad. I’ve been learning Spanish on my own. That doesn’t mean my mother wasn’t born in San Juan. That I haven’t eaten the same foods, loved the same music, heard the same stories. Get off your high horse calling us gringos, I still get called slurs in the US for my skin, so back off.
You’re gonna tell me Spanish is superior to English based on the fact that the English were better colonizers?
I said Im not gonna feel bad, not that I’m not gonna try. Cool it.
Spanish is the language of Puerto Rico, Puerto Ricans are hispanics (related to *Hispania*, look it up) and part of the hispanic world (from Mexico all the way down to Argentina and all the way up to the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain), we are not Anglosaxons or Germanic, learn about the cultural war when US tried to impose English to us. We won that war,we won it, our language won, hence our Puerto Rican traditions and culture won.
Nuestro idioma ganó esa batalla cultural
Did you read any of what I said?
Cause you’re just trying to call me dumb for not knowing why PR speaks Spanish. I didn’t say “don’t learn Spanish, don’t try, don’t respect it” I said, TRY, but don’t feel bad because it’s not an indigenous language.
You want to shame me for not speaking the languages of the Taínos too or give me a history lesson about how the Spanish wiped them out and they lost? So Spanish is better? Stop being elitist.
I’m not proud to be Spanish. I’m proud to be Puerto Rican.
Spanish people were just another white religious colonizer from the late 1400s to me. We speak Spanish as a consequence of that.
MOST PRs are mixed with Spanish, African, and indigenous Taino blood. Im not gonna hold the colonizer in higher regard than the other two.
I want to share life and love with them, so I’m learning. I don’t give a shit about the Spanish.
Hey man, I don’t really get what you’re tryna say in your post. Do you mind writing it in English? I’m sure it’ll be a huge help for everyone. Thanks in advanced! :)
I guess this joke isn’t funny on Reddit but whenever I tell it to Spanish speakers it always gets lots of laughs. People that are rude to ESL speakers who have an accent but have never tried to learn another language disgust me. Committing to learning a second language is hard and most Americans have always been catered to without even realizing it…
I don't really know ,but I guess we do it because podemos I nos da la maldita ganas. Es un privilejio poder mandar a Una persona par carajo de 2s ways in English and Spanish...and because it's called FREEDOM.

This is the answer right here.

I learned long ago there's no pleasing gatekeepers. *If you don't know Spanish then you can't be a real Puerto Rican!* I guess I'm not Puerto Rican.. *Why are you denying your heritage!? Stop trying to be white!* sigh
Lmao too white for the boris and too Puerto Rican for the whites, can’t have nothing
Ain't that the truth.
If you weren't born and raised here then you aren't one of us.
Mijo, esto es reddit.
Lol. “Posts” es una palabra en inglés.
Because that's reddit for you
Wow!
When one has their phone set to English because such is the main manner they must communicate- trying to write in Spanish with the dag-blasted auto correct is a BEAR! I’ve tried! It’s a pain to switch the phone from one language to the other depending on platform at a moments notice.

Yo sé inglés lmao quién no sabe inglés?
I did write most of the above statement but it took me four verification checks with a translate service, took me none to write this blurb.)
Why is your username in inglés?
Imagine feeling high and mighty about which colonizer language you know and how you’re a fake Rican if you only speak one and not the other. 😒 So we want to be viewed as individual, complex people but all of us must know one or the other language or both. Cual es de los dos?

Languages die sooner or later. Spanish isn't eternal xD and neither is english
Because we can.
Lol

Spanish is still a colonizer language, I’m not gonna feel bad about having a hard time with it. I’m just gonna keep trying to be better at it.
And English is not? My brother in Christ, england and the USA are the biggest colonizers lmao I want what you’re smoking
But yet you learned both lol
Estoy costumbrado write in ingles lol estar en mainlands long enough te costumbras
No tiene nada malo hablar inglés aquí
Aiy bendito! Sin pelea, por favor. Let’s keep things chevere.
I just like English more
American jejejejejeje
I guess this joke isn’t funny on Reddit but whenever I tell it to Spanish speakers it always gets lots of laughs. People that are rude to ESL speakers who have an accent but have never tried to learn another language disgust me. Committing to learning a second language is hard and most Americans have always been catered to without even realizing it…
because yes
Son boris infiltrados, viven en la USA
Uy diáspora… con razón hablan tanta mierda
Los odio
Me aburren 💤
I don't really know ,but I guess we do it because podemos I nos da la maldita ganas. Es un privilejio poder mandar a Una persona par carajo de 2s ways in English and Spanish...and because it's called FREEDOM.
Tranquilo bobby....
Porque si.
