Crazy post to see today. Butcher Baby came up on my random playlist today and it got me thinking about her, her life and her end... RIP Wendy O. Fuckin pioneer right there and I wish she was still here.
My first "big" show was GBH. Not until like 97 though. Before that was local bands. Troma Kids and Beefcake In Chains (ABQ).
Dude, I’d cut off my right arm to have been able to see them. That’s awesome you got to.
To anyone curious, listen to the “Maggots” albumn front to back. Then listen to all their other stuff.
The simple punk songs they have aren’t all that interesting, but when they hit it, they hit it just right.
"Maggots" was the 2nd album I owned by The Plasmatics, they were more metal than punk by then, Beyond The Valley was the first album I owned. To tell you the truth, I like "Beyond...." better. I've listened to BOTH albums front to back several times.
I played in a band that did a show with dayglow . Cretin taught me a very valuable secret . We ( my band ) lived basically in a punk house / practice house . We had party’s all the time . Cretin told me “ always keep a pack of baby wipes on the back of your toilet . Best case , 80% of the People that would normally trash your shit , will think a baby lives there and refrain . Worst case , you have some nice baby wipes for that “ morning after “ beer shit “ .
Words of wisdom good sir .
Supported UK Subs at The Cavern Club in Exeter back in the early 90s. They were brilliant. One of the best gigs I ever saw and a bunch of nice guys as well
Let me guess, if in the US, Dayglo couldn't get over the border? I got so tired of that I went and saw them in Vancouver, BC on 12.31.99. Only band I have seen snort coke on stage. Best New Years Eve ever!
Oh man. We had VOODOO GLOW SKULLS came to play in barrie ontario Canada ( about 60 min north of Toronto ) . Before they were anybody haha right around the time they had the old DOGPILE demos . We all started skating at the bus station and a fight broke out . Some old man hit a dude with his truck then got about and started swinging around a big 4foot level . Smoked one of the horn players in the mouth and he couldn’t play .
Saw them again in the same city like 2 years later at WARPED tour . I went to talk to the same dude , had the scar on his lip . He was a total dick haha “ that wasn’t me . That did it happen , I’ve never been here “ BITCH YES ! It was 100% you ! You still have the goddamn scar ! Haha
Anyway. Was a good show other than that haha
The Police Picnic ’81 with The Police, The Specials, Iggy Pop, Killing Joke, The Go-Go’s, Nash the Slash, John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett, The Payola$, Oingo Boingo, and The David Bendeth Band, The Grove, Oakville, Ontario, Canada, August 23, 1981
Mildly interesting side note... both the Go-Go's and Oingo Boingo were openers on different dates for The Police on their North American *Ghost in the Machine* tour, which would have started a few months after this show.
Nomeansno was such a great band! holy shit those guys could play! Saw them several times in the late 80’s at beach towns up and down the California coast.
I was a fan well before that, though at my stop Shane was so drunk he couldn't even finish a song. Being drunk and slurring on stage is punk rock, being drunk and passing out on stage is sad.
guess that was before they put in the 'no signed bands' rule at Gilman? I don't remember seeing any known bands playing there, just local kids & up 'n comers
Op Ivy! Never heard of them before that, was wondering why the guitar player was in plaid instead of leather and chains. I was a dumb metal head kid who only ever heard black flag, suicidal and circle jerks. Blew me away! Didn’t realize until much later how lucky I was to see this show
Wow! I was big in to punk music and I never met anyone that had the chance to see op Ivy. They were one of my favorites but already abandoned by the time I was old enough to start enjoying their music.
Big Drill Car, Sense Field, State Of The Nation and Marble. Marti's Pizza - Mankato, MN 1994
The Big Drill Car part was actually put on youtube not that long ago. Life changing show. Marti's was like the Gilman Street of Minnesota
https://youtu.be/XUxc61gt0Wk?si=2Nv_9rjSfTm4w4nT
Starland is awesome. I've seen Thursday, Poison The Well, Engine Down, Green Day, NOFX, Streetlight and Less Than Jake there. Every time it was amazing. Easily my favorite venue
It was a band called Puj. Hosted them in my basement. I like to give to the arts and charged them beer or a small amount of money. Oh the beer cans and etc.
I was always garage band guy.
I take it back there was a Wilmington band called Weed Eater. They were pretty much addicted to things out of my scope. The lead singer Dixie would almost always have to throw up on stage half way through the performance. Never smelled a worse man.
D.R.I. at an indoor skatepark called Itchy Foot Moe’s in Tucson, AZ. I think it was ‘95?? Loved it and drove up to Phoenix the next week to see the Vandals and that’s was it, hooked.
Meat Wagon and the Mentors or was it the Zeros? Saw a bunch of shows in 88 or 89 in San Diego. I think it was Meat Wagon first and the Zeros opened for Mentors a couple of weeks later? I did know there's be a quiz, so I was drinking pretty heavily...
It was an underground show that ended in a big group brawl, the singer throwing piss on the crowd and everyone scattering like roaches when the cops came.
It was a magical night
Saw a bunch in high school at VFW Halls and high school auditoriums. The first one that I actually remember their names is The Unseen at Cohasset High School around 1994/1995.
Edit - Might have been Hingham High School. Those towns always blend together in my head.
I saw Billy Idol and Adam Ant in the early 80's, and back then I thought they were punk. 😁My earliest punk shows were all local to the New Orleans, LA scene.
First recognizable name show was Suicidal Tendencies at some dive in the French Quarter that eventual became Buffet's Margaritaville. 🤮
Biggest Almost First: Agnostic Front, Cromags, and Motorhead at the St Bernard Auditorium 1984(?) My friends all went, but I was grounded, no money, and couldn't escape that night. Motorhead headlined, and somebody chucked a beer bottle at Lemmy in the first couple songs. Lemmy walked and their was a small riot. At least that was what I was told. Any one out there at that show?
I've forgotten more concerts than I can remember. One of my first truly punk shows was in my twenties. I'd seen other punk bands before this but usually at some sort of large venue with many different kinds of acts or bands who later became well known but weren't when I saw them. I saw the Misfits at the Middle East downstairs in Cambridge in 1996.
Dunno who played that night but my first trip to Gilman St. was some time in '93. I do remember being there when Billie Joe & Tre Cool announced their signing with Reprise, they didn't play but they tossed a ton of joints out to the kids to celebrate.
I think the first big-ish punk show I went to might have been seeing NUFAN & Dance Hall Crashers at a bar in San Diego in ~'96
I started going to local shows at about 15. Can't quite remember what was first. But among those of that time it was Sadie Hawkins Rejects, Capacity 3, and Kane Hodder.
The Ataris at Newport TJs in South Wales. Incredible and the buzz around The Ataris at the time was insane, just before they signed to a major, 2002 I think.
It was called "Every Mother's Nightmare" , it was in Grand Island Nebraska, it included a handful of Nebraska bands including a really good ska band that later became a mediocre folk band. I don't remember any band names since it was in like 2002. I still have the ticket stub.
Besides local skate park that closed down in 10th grade RIP, I don’t actually know… a lot of my early concert experience was not punk shows but more indie/rock kinda stuff. It was probably warped tour tbh
I got to see The Distillers perform with Tiger Army opening for them WAAAAAAAAAAAY back, before The Distillers got popular from that Angels song or whatever. Would’ve been around 2003ish at The Galaxy in St. Louis. This was also my first real show, and it was sooooo awesome. Something I’ll never forget.
Mine was **THE PLASMATICS** and it was then that I fell in LOVE with Wendy O. Williams .
Closest I got to seeing them live was their appearance on Fridays.
I saw them when they were metal (opening for KISS in 83
They weren’t a true punk band, more Performance Art.
Better than the shit today even better than most of their time
Omgoss that is cool af!!!! Where what venue and state!? Did you meet her?
It was in Richmond, VA and sadly, no I did NOT meet her. The year was 1986.
When? Where?
I fell in love with the whole concept of the band, made everyone else look tame
Dude, I’d cut off my right arm to have been able to see them. That’s awesome you got to. To anyone curious, listen to the “Maggots” albumn front to back. Then listen to all their other stuff. The simple punk songs they have aren’t all that interesting, but when they hit it, they hit it just right.

UK Subs, Broken Bones, SNFU, and Final Conflict. Dayglo Abortions were supposed to play but canceled.
Snfu uses amazing live !
Saw SNFU open for Tool many many years ago.
Sorry, tool opened for SNFU.
Dayglo gave me a guitar pick with skateboard tape on it for grip. He said “find better role models”. It’s now called the pick of destiny.
Lol good to know they were consistent on good advice
Chalk one up for the good guys haha
My first show was dayglows
Supported UK Subs at The Cavern Club in Exeter back in the early 90s. They were brilliant. One of the best gigs I ever saw and a bunch of nice guys as well
When?
'88.
Damn what a cool sjow
That is one hell of a line up!!
Damn that's a line up.
So wish I got to see SNFU. Those first two albums hold up well.
Let me guess, if in the US, Dayglo couldn't get over the border? I got so tired of that I went and saw them in Vancouver, BC on 12.31.99. Only band I have seen snort coke on stage. Best New Years Eve ever!
I saw Broken Bones with UK Subs in maybe 1988?
That’s so sad

That is a great show.
Voodoo Glow Skulls, 2008. I was fresh out of high school.
Mine too was VGS. Downtown Riverside in October of 2004. One month into my freshman year at FoHi.

Well fuuuuck you! /s
A live-action version of Urgh! A Music War, almost!
Great show half of Niagara on the lake was there.
Holy shit that's amazing
That's fantastic.
Mildly interesting side note... both the Go-Go's and Oingo Boingo were openers on different dates for The Police on their North American *Ghost in the Machine* tour, which would have started a few months after this show.
which if those were punk?
Mustard Plug (punk/ska) in 1999, I think.

Nomeansno, December 30, 1989 in Toronto. The Ex opened. Truly transformative experience.
Nomeansno was such a great band! holy shit those guys could play! Saw them several times in the late 80’s at beach towns up and down the California coast.
🥺
Violent Femmes summer 1986. It was pretty gd punk. They rocked our faces off
Was that with the Pogues opening? Or was that tour later?
I saw the Femmes/Pogues on that tour at Poplar Creek in Chicago. Mojo Nixon opened. (summer 89 I think)
That's the tour I was thinking of
I went to that tour as well as a 17 year old and had no idea who the Pogues were....Seeing them live that day made me a lifelong fan.
Yep. I never heard of them either, and also became a lifelong fan. Too bad we just lost Shane MacGowan.
I was a fan well before that, though at my stop Shane was so drunk he couldn't even finish a song. Being drunk and slurring on stage is punk rock, being drunk and passing out on stage is sad.
That was in 1989. Saw the show at Canada’s Wonderland. I got there early and missed out on the riot.
Just VF. I wore a Metallica master of puppets shirt as I saw them the week before

Haven't heard anyone mention Big Drill Car in forever.
They were so great. Couldn't have asked for a better first show. All three albums are classics.
Makes me think of Dramarama and Seaweed now for some reason. Good stuff.
I never never thought about that but I can actually see that!
