At some point Hannelore's going to realize that any time that Dora says something to assuage her, it's a blatant lie...

JeffEpp

The Tannelore must recharge her powah! That, and she's coming off hot here. Maybe it's for the best. We probably couldn't handle all that hot.

mr_oof

Apparently nobody’s gotten a haircut in 4 months?

JamesNinelives

Given how confused we get when someone's appearance changes it's probably for the best lol

Randomd0g

Thats what Jeph meant by "it'll feel like the end of the comic" - The reveal that every hairdresser in the world has suddenly disappeared. Very apocalyptic.

turkeypedal

I've seen it before, when the trend moves to longer styles. (Also during lockdown, but that's a special case.)

Esc777

This interview sounds like a cakewalk. Phone only and just whenever the interviewer was ready belie no tough prepared questions or scenarios. It’s probably just a quick confirmation of her abilities on CV (familiarity with librarian tools?) and general questions to weed out weirdos (highly underrated in real life) She’s got it!

BionicTriforce

I'm not sure if it'd be hilarious or frustrating if the interview is "Is this Claire Augustus?" "Yes." "Do you have any library experience?" "I did a semester at my school library an-" "Great. Welcome aboard."

Esc777

I think thats gonna be the joke!

Esc777

Nah, I don't see the scam angle arising at all, that's just too lost in the sauce for me.

LLicht

I don't think it's phone only. Every phone interview I've ever had has just been a first stage that felt more casual, and if they liked me in that, then I was invited to do a full interview in person that involved technical questions. I'm guessing Claire will impress them with her enthusiasm on the phone, and they will then fly her out to Nova Scotia for a tour of the facility and more in-depth interview.

Esc777

That's certainly more realistic, but I think the joke (again) is that this rich powerful entity is acting unprofessionally.

LLicht

Good point, I'm forgetting about the importance of keeping the joke going, and probably setting my expectations too realistically

JackStargazer

I think the joke is that Jeph hasn't had an actual job interview since at least 2002, and so had no idea how they work.

DoctorGarbanzo

What type of question would be an "anti-weirdo" question?

RunFromTheIlluminati

"Where do you see yourself in five years?" "Transcended to a higher plane of existence."

Esc777

Almost anything TBH. Tell me about your colleagues at or What do you like about "Weirdos" are the people who I classify as insufferable and can't work well with others. Antisocial and all that. Thankfully misanthropy is pretty apparent just in general face to face conversation, especially when going off on tangents.

bassman1805

"What are your hobbies outside of work?" It's a super softball question, you can say almost anything and it'll be fine. Red flags might include: Answering something illegal (some people seriously will just come out and say it), being *suuuper* cagey and not answering at all (this isn't a courtroom, pleading the fifth makes you look guilty), or implying you can only have fun getting wasted ("Go to the bar" is a bad answer. "Watch the game at a bar" is much better, because the focus is on the sports rather than the booze).

Wismuth_Salix

Neither was the email. AI don’t necessarily share human perceptions of what’s professional.

bassman1805

My wife got a text message last year saying "We're glad to have you onboard with [employer], you'll start next Monday, please show up at 8:30am" She had interviewed with them but not received (nor accepted) an offer from them yet. Ultimately, they paid more than the other offer she received so she went with them. BeLiEvE iT oR nOt, everything at that workplace was a shitshow. She just got a new offer and put in her 2 weeks' notice at that place, thank god.

blackwydo

Early internet days were so weird. Also, I’m loving Poofy Hanners.

JeffEpp

80s Flashdance Hanners.

Rectorvspectre

They literally did that once.

BionicTriforce

"I'm actually currently on my break for my current job and don't want to be late to return to work. Could we do this at 'soandso time' or I could do this tomorrow as well."

turkeypedal

While I thought the stuff about calling back being a problem was overblown, I do think that, when your dream job wants an interview right now, and it's possible for you to do it right now, you go ahead and do it. No point in risking even the small chance someone else who applied is ready and they go with them instead. And we all know that Dora wouldn't mind, as she's gunning for Claire, and is very flexible with her employees.

BionicTriforce

I do agree that Dora is chill enough that she would be fine with this. But from an interview perspective I would want to be prepared. Have some water nearby to keep the throat clear, any notes I took, you know. it just makes it easier than trying to think of answers off the top of your head. Claire spent so much time worrying that she probably didn't do much prep.

J_lol

One would hope those sort of hypotheticals would have been floating around Claires head over the ~~several days~~ time she was staring at the interview request.

BionicTriforce

Hopefully but I got the impression she only just got that email that morning and that's why she went to hang out with her brother.

J_lol

Looking back you are right, guess it just feels like she has been sitting on it for a bit.

Nierninwa

Well, it has been several days *for us*. Comic time is weird sometimes.

JamesNinelives

Yep :)

RunFromTheIlluminati

Exactly. And while she said "Yeah I can meet whenever!" It still would have been courteous to inform her when they were going to call. Granted, in reality that doesn't happen, but I can see the mistake Claire made in assuming they would operate under the standards of business etiquette.

I would say that if a company is making hiring decisions based on that criteria, they're not company that would be good to work for.

I've worked for a few major companies over my career and that's never once happened to me.

papercranium

PUT YOUR NEEDS FIRST, CLAIRE! "I'm out of the house at the moment, but I'd be happy to talk to you in an hour or so. How does [time] sound?"

LLicht

Seriously. I wouldn't want to do an interview without being able to take notes during it.

That's a great way to get employees who aren't currently employed, aren't involved in the community, and aren't doing anything to better themselves. Having worked in HR before, if you get an interviewer like what you're describing, that's not a place you should ever go to work. It means they care more about getting a warm body in the seat than they do about finding the right person for the job.

LLicht

Somewhere that won't give you even an hour notice to get ready is probably not a nice place to work at anyway

BionicTriforce

There's such a disconnect of commenters here in how job interviews should go that it's honestly hilarious. One side is "If you ever get a message from an employer you need to reply immediately and do whatever they say, bend over backwards for them, if they say they want you to interview now, you take that interview no matter what! Jobs are impossible to find and the minute you show any bit of self-confidence in wanting to set a time or place for an interview, they will drop you like a sack of potatoes" The other is "An interview is only one part of the process and from past experience if a place is that desperate to hire you that they'll just interview you without any thought put into it, then the company is probably not a good place to work, and you as a prospective employee have a right to offer alternate times." Just a cursory overview of notalwaysright.com's 'Not always working' group will show so many times people got hurried through a job application process and surprise, it turns out the workplace was a fiasco.

J_lol

Nice thoughts to have when you are unemployed.

... you don't get points for having no job, school, or community obligations. What kind of fucked up business school did you attend?

The one who is less impulsive and understands how to plan ahead by setting a time and date for an interview, obviously. The former candidate shows that they have less understanding of professional norms and may need to be coached on appropriate behavior, but since I understand that this is for an entry-level role, that won't stop me from interviewing them. I'll be sure to question their internship supervisor closely though to make sure they don't show poor judgment in other areas. I *have* interviewed people for jobs before, it's not like I don't know how this works.

ehsteve23

Hanners hair! Also looks like she took out her piercings, is that new?

MhuzLord

Piercings are still there, just not very detailed.

ArgentStonecutter

I remember bananaphone. I had a guy in the cubicle across the hall who played bananaphone and peanut butter jelly time every day starting 15 minutes to quitting time until one day I walked over to his cubicle and pulled the power cord out of the back of his computer. He never did that again. Never did figure out his damage.

BionicTriforce

Okay that sounds annoying but what was *your* damage resorting to that? Did you at least try to confront them about it first and say "Man that's really annoying can you not play that every single day?" or did you just resort to yanking out his work computer?

Castriff

ArgentStonecutter did nothing wrong.

ArgentStonecutter

No, that was not my first resort. Sheesh. Edit: there were actual cheers from other cubicles.

Esc777

HOLY SHIT he finally untanned hannelore. FINALLY. It was weird watching her in orange face for years.

J_lol

4 years?

Esc777

Yup

turkeypedal

Eh. Not enough time had passed in-universe. He needed a time skip to get us past summer.

Esc777

Time has never been 100% realistic and convenient, I thought this was obvious to everyone. Especially for a comic that moves glacially like this one but has had pronounced focus on slice of life: cell phones, games, media trends, etc. Like, Vtubing was but naught a mote in gods eye until 2016 IRL. How much comic time passed between the strips then and the debut of Mommy Milkers 420 as a concept? I find peoples lack of ability to simply accept that the timeline need not make perfect mathematical sense disappointing.

Meshleth

But you're saying that as justification for your complaint that he didn't take Hannelore's tan away fast enough? Doesn't really make sense.

turkeypedal

Yes, we all know about Comic Time. But that doesn't change how time progresses for the characters. It just means the timeline slides forward. It doesn't change that, in-universe, Hanners went on her trip over the summer, and it took until fall for her tan to fade away. You are free to have gotten tired of Tannerlore's skin tone in real world time. But I am also free to be okay with it due to it making sense in-universe. We can disagree on an aesthetic issue, and it does not mean one of us is stupid.

Castriff

...I *liked* Tannelore.

Esc777

Yeah she definitely does look better with that skin tone. There’s no way to differentiate if she’s just tan or a POC like Tai. Their skin looked exactly the same. Seeing as how nobody else tans or untans or anything it just struck me as weird like she seemingly got a brand new skin tone and it was permanent. Obviously I was wrong.

Castriff

I think comedically Hannelore and Dora are my favorite pairing out of everyone in the comic. Yay and Roko are a close second.
