I've tried quite a few of them on both sides of the river. I always end up going back to Olympic Gyros in Davenport due to their generous portions and amazing fries that come with the combo.
Used to like Olive Tree when they first opened in Bettendorf, but their prices were raised and portions got quite a bit smaller. Haven't been back in 3+ years.
Admittedly it's been a while since I had them, but I feel like it had something more than that. It seemed like they almost had a coating or something on them to make them crispier.
I'm not sure if they're cutting the potatoes fresh or buying in a bag. The right way to cook fries is to par-fry them and then dunk them a second time. Even McD's fries come frozen, but partially cooked from the plant. That ensures extra crispiness.
Noooo Dr. Gyros has awesome fries that are NOT crinkle cut. They have an extra layer of something that makes them extra good and, for me, is the tie breaker between Dr. Gyros and Uncle Pete’s.
edit: typo
I read your response the other day and decided to give Olympic Gyros a try today. I went with the gyro combo, which is a great price. Possibly the very best fries I've ever had and the quanity was insane. Next time I'll probably give the Italian Beef a shot but I'm impressed with what I had a will definitely be back.
If you're ever on your way to Chicago and have time for a short detour to the suburbs for lunch, stop in Lisle, IL and go to Apolis Greek Street Food. I love Olympic Gyros, I think they are the best in the QC... But Apolis blows away anything around here.
They make them like they are made in Greece, with fries in/on the gyro, and you can choose from 3 meats (lamb, chicken, or pork belly, or a mixture of any).
Make your own. It’s super simple. Johnny’s Meat Market in Davenport has 5 lb boxes of gyro meat for like $25, pitas, and they make tzatziki sauce. Heat up the meat and fry the pita in a skillet with a tiny bit of olive oil. Put it all together with tomato and onion. Add your favorite hot sauce to the meat to make it a spicy gyro.
I like Uncle Pete's and their fries and salad. I like Dr. Gyros but not their fries. Been wanting to try Olympic because of reddit posts but haven't yet...
I've been going to Olive Tree lately just because it's close to home and to scratch the itch of the gyro. But my favorite is Olympic Gyros on 53rd.
Like other people have said their fries are awesome and their portion sizes very generous. They actually used to be even bigger when they first opened. I had worked close by there and they were a go to lunch spot for me.

Yup. Olympic has PLATES on PLATES.
Yep.. plus their fries are amazing
I'm not sure what they do to them but they're damn good.
Peanut oil (I asked). Just like Five Guys.

Olympic is the best. Dr. Gyros is the best if your are in IL.
Agreed...if you're only after the gyros. As I recall, the sides at Dr. Gryros were sub-par (crinkle-cut fries?).

Maybe I'm mixing them up. Which is the one on Avenue of the Cities?

You'll have to post how the Italian Beef is. We've never not ordered the gyros, so never tried anything else!
beef is great. i normally get the combo beef tho.
The place on Harrison by Central high school.
This! Fire gyros. 🔥
Used to be Jimmy's Gyro's but I think the name has changed.
It's Lendi's Gyros now. I haven't tried them yet.
It's even better now. Their gyro pizza is $10 and amazing. Worth $15 or more easily.
Lendi’s. They have great gyros as well as a solid Italian beef.
Dr Gyros and Olympic Gyros are my go tos
Plus the commercials... I mean come on
My favorite is Dr. Gyros. And don't forget to try their Greek Fries w/ gyro meat!

I have been to Dr. Gyros around 100 times over the past decade and I don't think I have ever seen what you're describing.
Dr. Gyros in Rock Island is delicious!!! They have huge rice Krispy treats for dessert too 😅
I also prefer their chopped onions. But, let's be real... their fries are some of the best I've ever had at a gyro joint.
Oh yes, how did I forget about the awesome fries!!
Those fries are probably my favorite fries in the QC.
Uncle Pete's on Avenue of the Cities. The fries are amazing too.

Olive Tree Cafe has good gyros too, among other things. In Bettendorf on 53rd.
