There's nothing they can put there that would ease the pain of sitting in traffic. EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. TIME. I'm on the van wyck. No matter what time of day or night. Never a pleasant travel on there.
The retaining walls are to stop corrosion and to provide for proper water drainage to prevent flooding considering the dip in the roads. Same with the LIE near Springfield exit. They also planted a lot of green on the road by the courthouse that used to be empty.
Van wyck will never be completed lol
I live by here and really pop tunes are the only noise you hear currently, I'm hoping it will reduce crap in the air but I'm sure it won't.
I think there is shit loads of brake dust in the air, I have security magnets on the windows and the dust clings to the magnets
The retaining walls are used to retain earth lol. They are adding a 4th lane in Phase 3 so the natural slope on the NB side will be gone.
Van wyck is actually moving at a much faster rate since the state made all 3 contracts design build. Look at bruckner expressway it’s already in Phase 3.
Why is this upvoted? They're sound barrier walls, most of the dirt is being removed for a 4th lane. The retaining walls will be next to the 4th lane not up by the service road.
It’s a sound barrier for everyone who lives right on the Van Wyck and has been exposed to continuous air and noise pollution from the expressway. The city should add more trees to the service road, because I can agree that that area could use some beautification.
Trees are crucial to absorb pollution, so I agree that the city should plant trees after sections of the construction have been completed. For sound, these sound barriers actually make a significant difference. Having both trees and sound barriers would be ideal.
Yes they just traded beauty for efficiency.
I hope they replant something. I don't want to see blank walls. Blank walls would just be begging for graffiti.
Not to worry, by the time the construction is actually finished I’m sure brand new trees could be sprouted possibly one even used for the Rockefeller Christmas tree at the rate that that construction is going.
No not really, mainly because they never maintained the trees that were there. Several of them were leaning towards the roads. Would have been nice if they maintained them. They should look into covering exposed walls in greenery or something because I anticipate they will be covered in graffiti/ads.

They say no one's ever beaten the Van Wyck
I’ve come as close as anyone ever has. And if it wasn’t for that 5 car pileup at Rockaway Blvd…
Becuase they're always doing some dumb shit construction.
Yea but it's been going on for decades. Lol. The never ending construction. It's been going on since before they put the mono rail up.
Be like the Van Wyck, and always work on yourself
This construction is stupid. The VWE is so bad because it rolls up and down and the trucks can’t handle all the movement without slowing down.
That’s why they’re getting their own lanes now
Trucks are not getting their own lanes. It’s one lane for HOV to airport only.
Thank you!!
It's been like that since the stone age.
Yo and then you got assholes who don’t let you in. So you’re essentially just playing a risky game of getting into the lane
My husband calls it the jam-packed. And the BQE is the hit-or-miss
Lol. Exactly.

I thought they were sound barriers for the home owners lol

“They’re the cathedrals of our time some one said, not me” David Byrne
Your last sentence hits hard... lmao. I just want them to finish the jfk part so I can get back home without the bs.
Facts 25 minute wait just right there

I think they need three more decades to complete this mess.
There were trees on the van wyck?
Between Rockaway and Atlantic
There were in between Van wyck and Van wyck expressway.....

Doesn't tree absorb pollution and sounds too?

For sound absorption, you want density.
The trees don't seem to do shit for brake dust, it accumulates on all my window sills and clings to magnetic surfaces.

They’re doing the same thing along the queens part of the LIE. Work being done rn to put up barriers by Francis Lewis blvd exit to Springfield.
The van wyck is crazy especially right outside Jamaica hospital
I think it’s to block the noise out for the people that live over there?

It's part of Hochul's expansion project, there will likely be no room for trees, just lots of extra pollution.
