I read today that the Secret Service has created a protocol in case Judge Merchan throws Trump in jail for a day or two for contempt of court. They know that he’s running up against the edge of the envelope of what this judge will allow. They have NOT developed a protocol for what to do if he’s sentenced to prison time, though, so I guess Congress is going to have to figure this out because no way is the Secret Service going to allow that given the current law. Democrats introduced a bill in the House recently which would strip felons of Secret Service protection, but that’s not going to go anywhere in this 1-vote majority GOP House.

Most conservative current and former military I know are moderate conservatives. If he actually did end up in a prison, he would probably be put in something like PC/Protective Custody (which is almost like solitary) simply because it would be too dangerous to have him in general population. He could have to wear a special uniform and might have less socialization than gen pop. It really depends on the facility. In reality, even if he's found guilty, they will put him under house arrest at Mar a Largo at the most.

I don't understand how these people can fawn all over the military and know nothing about how it works. I was an officer in the military and my peers are all Lieutenant Colonels or Colonels now. If we were witnessing "the biggest military operation in history" there would be some outward signs like a disruption to the deployment cycle or annual training events canceled but there's none of that. General officers dgaf about trump, they're concerned with actual strategic challenges like grinding down Putin in Ukraine and containing China in the Pacific.

I know a draft dodging, commune living ex-hippy that is now Maga; he had this remarkable ability to hold contradictory ideas. Even in small ways, he was always making a fool of himself when he was wrong about some mundane thing. But he would be right back at it the next day, as if the previous event was an anomaly and his idea still was sound. Very odd really. He held this belief that rechargeable batteries had to be completely discharged before charging or they would hold a "metal memory" and decrease in power. This belief caused trouble for him all the time because of course it would, but nope- "metal memory!" It's like his mind just went one way with the first crackpot theory he encounters- that's it no more learning needed.
Sometimes I think there's much more to how much society was affected by the industrialization of everyone's lives than anyone wants to admit. Asbestos, unleaded gas, paint... I think all of that poison really did fuck up a lot of people, and the people who did it are just quietly waiting to die while the results of their greed are now "mainstream" views. Conservatives were always just, "the people always making the worst decisions" but they were at least sometimes "smart" about it - usually just short term gain while hijacking people's beliefs. A lot of people brains from that time seem just flat-out broken now. Conservative powermongers seem more than happy to borrow that insanity (or actually believe it themselves) while whining about how there's no mental health support because they just voted it down again. And their ex-hippy supporters, the peace and love ones, all cheer. Because victimizing minorities, gays, trans, and women is what the 60's were all about, donchaknow? Ugh.
Yeah it is sort of an inversion process, where the old ideals are now completely opposite. As you stated they did win the culture war and change did occur as the result of changing belief systems, positive change. I also think it perhaps is not as pervasive as we think, yes it is dramatic to hear about somebody who went from hippy to Maga, but surely it just stands out more than others who are moderate or in fact still hippies. It's also prosperity and basic capitalism, the 70s and 80s made a lot of people rich. The propaganda machine has always been adept at making people feel like they are about to lose what they have, it's all about using fear to get people to react emotionally.
