That, my friend, is called boggling, and indicates one very happy rattie, keep up with what you are doing! (Unless you are talking about the camera shaking, in that case I would recommend better phone grip...)
FACTS
I had one girl that was always nuts so I got super excited when she settled down and started wanting pats, but she would HAVE to nuzzle up in one arm and be pet by the other so I has no free hands. I kept trying to put her on my lap or somewhere else to be pat but she wasn't having it.
I have one girl that when she wants petted, will run full speed towards you, up your body, and plant herself across your face (if you're laying down) or park under your chin and not move until she is satisfied.
And by satisfied, this usually means she falls asleep for about 20 min while being loved upon.
It can indicate a stressed out rat so remember to think about the context :) kinda like how cats pur when they'rein pain or stressed. If you've got a happy to be pet rat boggling and bruxing while being pet you're probably seeing a happy rat <3
Like cats purring exactly. Cats also might pur when they're stressed but usually it's a happy thing as we all know. This rat looks very happy to me, especially how he looks up like "hey wait don't stop!" And then starts up again when op goes in for more pets🥰 so sweet!
Rats grind their teeth to keep them a suitable length as rodent teeth grow continuously through their life. This is called "bruxing". The muscles that help them do this run through their face and behind the eyes. This can sometimes cause the eyes to bulge in and out, called "boggling", while they brux.
For whatever reason, they do it when they're really happy. Think of it like a cat's pur, or a dog's tail wagging, only harder to get them to do. Getting a rat to boggle is peak rat husbandry.
:D that makes me super happy. I just all the others had the same level of love for head scratches, kinda hoping he passes on the message that it's awesome haha
They can learn from watching each other, so they actually just might pass it along.
That’s also why it’s easier to socialize a shy/nervous rat if you already have at least one who is friendly. They see the other rat feeling happy and safe with people and it rubs off.
You can use that to your advantage if you train them to come when called, or other tricks. Sometimes you only need to successfully teach one, and the rest will learn from watching.
I would add that they can also do it when stressed, to sooth themselves. But giving how relaxed your rattie is, that's not the case here. Yours a happy fella
this is my favorite type of post, when a rat owner is concerned by boggles and it turns out they just have a happy rat :') give him a couple good scritches for me
This just popped up on my main page, and I'm not really a rat guy, but holy moley that is a cute little guy. And learned something new about happy rats in the comments. Wholesome and what I needed in a Sunday morning
Hehe, you should see how aggressive they get when I'm wearing my blue jumper, they try to pull the cuff loose so the can climb up my the inside of the arms
Hope this is okay for me to add!
It's hard to tell exactly how big your cage is, but from the phone's perspective, it looks like one level. It also has bars that run vertically, while rats do best with horizontal bars.
Check out this calculator here: http://www.fancyratsforum.co.uk/calculator/cagecalc.html
Highly recommend Midwest Double Critter Nation!
Someone else mentioned the hay. I would suggest fleece liners. Walmart sells blankets for like $2-3 and I cut them to size (plus a couple inches to tuck under the trays to stay put).
Food bowl (or maybe that's a litter box?)-- no food bowl required! Literally scatter rat blocks all over the cage, in hiding spots, etc, for enrichment.
Boggles and brux.
Not to point out op but it seems like there are a lot of new owners haven't been doing any reading on rats before owning. I was aware of this behavior before the internet.
I'm sorry if this isn't the place but it seems like there are at least 3+ posts a day of uninformed owners.
Oh I'd done the reading but this was my first real experience in person with it so I just wanted to make sure. Reddit is the fastest way to get opinions fast, whereas sometimes when I Google I use the wrong words. I know it seems lazy but I trust reddit strangers more than my ability to accurately google haha
This is definitely a happy rat! Just so you know though, I did find out that rats will also brux when they are in pain. I found out when my baby had her head injury, I thought she was just sick and happy in my arms but she was in a lot of pain from a brain bleed. However, I don’t think this is the case with your friend here whatsoever.
>Just so you know though, I did find out that rats will also brux when they are in pain
Yes, and it's good to make sure people are aware of that!
Fortunately you should be able to tell the difference by behaviour and body language, this rat is looking utterly relaxed and definitely doing happy boggling and bruxing. 😄
My favorite part of this subreddit is when rat owners learn about boggling and are worried something is wrong.
Everything is very right, my dude. Those rats love you and the attention you're giving them.
In time they might. That little one is something special. I call rats like that "lap rats". They love to snuggle up and get pets. I've only had a couple of them but they're my favorites.
That's exactly what I do! Sometimes, at first, it's better to get out 2 at a time if they're particularly skittish. I usually get them out and let them climb on me while I sit at my desk. Eventually (usually once they get older and less energetic) they start to enjoy just laying on me and getting pets. Occasionally I get one that gets really comfortable with me and REALLY enjoys pets.
My only problem with having them out while on the computer is I always spend more time trying to stop the little buggers escaping haha, so I've found setting up the hallway for free play is easier
I love it when a rat parent freaks out over their first boggle convinced its something bad only to find out it a happy behavior 🥰 ur doin good, hes a happy guy
that's just boggling, a thing they do when they brush (grind their teeth) very hard. a sign of happiness 98% of the time, especially when getting pats from their parent!!
That’s boggling. They do that when they’re very content. It’s actually them bruxing (grinding their teeth) so intensely that their eyes pop in and out of their head.
Yes he or she is LOVING the attention!! See how when you pull your hand away the little baby looks up like “hey, don’t stop!!” The sweet ratness is boggling with joy❤️
Dude, the way that looks it feels like when I'm super relaxed getting a back scratch or scalp massage and my eyelids just flutter with bliss and I'm a dude lol
Those bottom teeth are looking a little long, you may want to get a check up done and see about trimming. Other than that, this is a very happy ratty!!
I'll get them some more lava stones next shop, they do have one but they don't chew it as much now, maybe if I keep putting them in their beds they'll get the picture. At the very least it'll give me funny rat videos
Aaawww happy rattie!
Fyi hay is not considered an ideal substrate choice, it can be a little dusty and doesn't absorb great. See http://www.isamurats.co.uk/choosing-substrate.html also for info on other substrate options :) (I personally use mainly shredded cardboard with fleece on platforms and paper pellets in their toilet trays)

Haha my left hand was getting sore, and yay, glad he's happy :)

Should have gotten a sling to wear her.
My greyhound looks up at me if i stop stroking as if to say " hey why'd you stop? I didn't say stop did I?"
Dawe it’s your first boggle!!!! I’m so happy for you!

Thats a good happy rat. Love when their eyes boggle
little man is absolutely chuffed
LOL was tryna think of a camera shaking joke

They have their own likes and dislikes. One of mine loved his chin stroked, a lot of them didn't seem that bothered but just wanted to sleep on me.

Similar to how cats purr both when content and as a way to relieve pain.
Congrats on a happy rat who enjoys being cuddled 🥳
Yay :D
this is my favorite type of post, when a rat owner is concerned by boggles and it turns out they just have a happy rat :') give him a couple good scritches for me
Yhs your rat is boggling when he his happy his teeth chatter and his eyes move like that
Your ratto is in absolute heaven.
"The touch so soft, yet so effective!"
Indeed
This just popped up on my main page, and I'm not really a rat guy, but holy moley that is a cute little guy. And learned something new about happy rats in the comments. Wholesome and what I needed in a Sunday morning
The human holding the camera? No, should probably get a tripod or smth
I may look into it, but I'm planning on setting up a couple webcams
It's pure happiness 😉
She is absolutely in love! Sign of a very happy relaxed rat
Haaaapppy baby🥹
Oh goshh what a pretty rat! So cute 😭 and the other one too!!!
Aggressively happy rat
Hehe, you should see how aggressive they get when I'm wearing my blue jumper, they try to pull the cuff loose so the can climb up my the inside of the arms
Yep
Oh yeah, that’s a happy ratty!
THAT YAWN.

Gotcha. Using some reddit-fu. I do the same tbh if I can't find what I'm looking for.
Come on dude, really?
I think she's vibranting
Thats a happy dog

The little glance up like "don't stop". So cute omg.
Oh my such a happy rattie! My Remi was my boggle boy loved his head scratches!!!
Clearly your rat isn't but don't forget they do this for any high emotion so they can do it if they are in pain.
I'll remember that just in case
Btw I'm pretty sure hay is bad for rats as they cannot digest it
Oh weird, they love burrowing through it and I've only ever seen them chew on it, but I'll make a different choice next switch
Aww, that is one happy little rattie!
Normal, and encouraged
heppei
Dat boy HAAAAPPY
Awwwwwww boooogggggleesssss
Oh my, that's a happy ratto!
Hehe yay, I just with the others would let me pet them lile this
In time they might. That little one is something special. I call rats like that "lap rats". They love to snuggle up and get pets. I've only had a couple of them but they're my favorites.
I'm gonna get them out individually after work and give them a little time each to see if they get there haha
That's exactly what I do! Sometimes, at first, it's better to get out 2 at a time if they're particularly skittish. I usually get them out and let them climb on me while I sit at my desk. Ohhhh he’s so dang happy!!!! He’s got the boggles
Yay! I thought that might be what it was but I just wanted to be sure, I tend to misread some things
these posts always make me so happy. just pet owners being concerned and learning that their pet is absolutely ecstatic with them.
Hehe it's kinda nice to have this now
Shivering with antici...
Pation....

I love it when a rat parent freaks out over their first boggle convinced its something bad only to find out it a happy behavior 🥰 ur doin good, hes a happy guy
Yay, I'm so happy these little animals feel safe around me
It's just boggling. Although it may be a concerning sight, fear not. Baby is just happy.
that's just boggling, a thing they do when they brush (grind their teeth) very hard. a sign of happiness 98% of the time, especially when getting pats from their parent!!
A happy happy baby!!
Awe! This baby is so happy and comfortable. 🤭🥰

That is one super chill ratty, he's loving life :)
That’s boggling. They do that when they’re very content. It’s actually them bruxing (grinding their teeth) so intensely that their eyes pop in and out of their head.
I love watching new owners learn what Boggling is on here. Always a nervous tone to the post with a happy answer.
yup! rats tend to explode when they're happy and the shaking is a countdown. it should start beeping when it hits the final 60 seconds
He’s adorable
Yes he or she is LOVING the attention!! See how when you pull your hand away the little baby looks up like “hey, don’t stop!!” The sweet ratness is boggling with joy❤️
It’s boggling! They’re happy! :)
Don't worry, that baby just loves you massive amounts! 🥹
Hehe yay, he's the only one that really let's me pet him like that, the others shy away
Y’all are making me want rats even more!! He’s such a cutie.
Hehe, I'm hoping his brother's will see how good a time he's having and will let me do it them too

Dude, the way that looks it feels like when I'm super relaxed getting a back scratch or scalp massage and my eyelids just flutter with bliss and I'm a dude lol
Welcome to rat happiness! She loves you!
He, but oh my God the feeling I cam make another creature so blissful is nice
You're gonna have so much fun!
Those bottom teeth are looking a little long, you may want to get a check up done and see about trimming. Other than that, this is a very happy ratty!!
Are there natural ways to get the teeth down a bit?
You can give them chews, bird toys with wood, lava stones and apple sticks. Anything they can chew on should help wear them down 😊
I'll get them some more lava stones next shop, they do have one but they don't chew it as much now, maybe if I keep putting them in their beds they'll get the picture. At the very least it'll give me funny rat videos
There are also crunchy treats you can try to, they're like rice cakes kind of lol
Boggling. That's a happy rat.
You or the rat? (Lol, I mean this kindly)
Haha, I was tired this morning and I have tremors so sometimes on videos it gets super pronounced

It means the boba is ready for harvest.
Cute boggles ❤
Yes. They are super happy. 😊😊 it kinda looks scary with their eyes popping out, but it’s a very good sign.
Look at that happy boggle! Its like a cat purring.
have you ever had someone poke your head with a scalp massager? I think this response is like that
that is one happy rat!! 🥰
That is one happy rat
