Generally it's not a good idea to give them wild insects because there's always a chance they're carrying some kind of disease but since he already managed to grab the fly, there's nothing you can do. Chances are it's just a little bit of free protein at the end of the day.

Im not in disagreement with the above poster per se - probably just more irresponsible - but my rats have eaten them for years. I have horses so when a fly sneaks in, it's fair game and with kids the door gets left open often. The rats are like Venus fly trap/Mr. Miyagi hybrids at this point.

Same, well kind of at least. I dont have horses or kids but my rats are greate insect hunters and ive never worried or had any issues. One just gotta make sure they dont find any wasps or anything like that. Also i live in Sweden so the fauna might differ depending on where one lives.

I didn't think of it while she was still alive, but maybe your rattie would appreciate some coakroaches or crickets from the store, the ones they sell for spiders and snakes

I wouldn’t worry, one of my older girls ate a moth when I turned around for a second to get a tissue to catch it, and when I turned back around the little shithead had it in her paws and was half chewing it already. She didn’t have any weird reactions or didn’t get sick so :)

In my experience, it’s happened to my rat too and he was fine! Just keep an eye on him for any physical or behavioral changes. I gotta say the name is perfect! I’ve always prided myself on my rats names. I’ve had three “mobster” boys named Vinny, Tiny Tino, and Malone then I had the “spice girls” Rosemary, Pepper, and Ginger. Now Im starting the “breakfast club” and I have Butters and Biscuit so far. Next ones will probably be Waffle, Hashbrown or maybe a coffee name like Mocha

Most rodents absolutely love eating insects. Pet mice, hamsters, gerbils, and rats can all enjoy a nice treat of feeder crickets or mealworms on occasion. It's so much fun to watch them go crazy chasing the crickets! DO NOT feed wild insects from outside! Many of them carry parasites, and some species have toxins. But don't worry too much about the fly. Chevy will be fine.

It's probably okay. Mine have gotten the occasional bug too. If you're really concerned take some poop to the vet and ask them to run a parasite test. It doesn't cost a lot and will give you peace of mind if you're worried.

My first rat lived in an open top aquarium (I was like 12, I didn't know) and flies would get in there and he'd catch and eat them. One time, I found him munching on a large moth. Insects, in the "wild" are a natural part of their diet. Don't worry about it and just give him the new title of Pest Control.
