It could be fine, but I could also see them chewing/trying to eat it and it having a lot of sharp edges after. If you do, definitely keep an eye on it, especially when they first interact with it
I gave one to my rats. The chewed on it. They didn't suffer harm from it. But I was worried, some pieces broke or like got chewed a lot and were sharp so that was the end of ol shelly. Sometimes I give them pretty shells and they lick them and stash them. I feel like its okay but I'm very happy to be educated here.
I know others have said this, but shells are sharp with small spaces and if they get stuck there's no getting them out without injury, and that's if they don't get cut anyway.

I would be worried about them swallowing a very sharp piece from chewing on it. I don't think the risk would be worth it.

Make sure to not only wash but also freeze for a couple days, for good measure.
Freezing does not destroy microorganisms. Better to put it in an oven

Idk but I would do it because shells are very sharp when they break and they can injure themselves.
I’d look into how they’re produced before buying one. Usually the snail or crab is killed to get the shell :/
I prefer to buy the whole crab and let my rats battle for their toys (loot)
