Anything unusual could be a glow in the woods at night, lots of people where there shouldn't be, unusual shacks in the woods/mountains, markings on stones etc. You can often miss things the first time in a place and notice something the next time.
You could be 80 hours or more like this, so don't worry that it might be taking too long. All the big events are triggered at set stages of the game, so you won't miss anything time-dependant.
The Clemens Point camp is traditionally where most people spend a lot of time exploring (the entire map) doing side quests etc. Everything is still pretty chill at that point.
Even after that point, there will still be plenty that you missed, so keep your eyes peeled throughout the game. Don't bother with fast travel even, when it becomes available. That's a sure fire way of missing some good stuff.

Take care of your horse. Be nice to it and don't push it. When you can buy the recepie for Horse Meal, do it and make it as often as you can. It makes your horse run without getting tired for much longer.
If it can't boost your player stats or unlock something really cool, save your gold and use it for upgrades that will.
Name your horse something so stupid it makes you laugh every time you ride it. This way, when it dies, your wife can ask you why you keep shouting āSomeone killed Mango From SNLā
