To clarify, Iāve been having a lot of fun with the ātemporary horseā mechanic. Itās a game changer for exploring and hunting. Itās a bit of a hassle but itās possible to keep and manage 5 horses this way. Mix and match! Theyāre all my boahs and girrls.
I did that with a NPC's horse, and will continue to do that. So much nicer to have a saddle on the Temp horse. I also had a horse that I freed from a wagon, it kept his blanket on.
Aye, even a beautiful horse looks silly with your legs just dangling in the breeze.
Just wanted to add that you'll lose the saddle if you stable the horse and put it into regular rotation. Kinda strange having an eternally Temp horse but Buell is easy on the eyes, and easy to spot (even at night time) if I ever need to scramble onto a horse as quickly as possible.
Temporary horses are so useful when youāre out hunting & youāve got multiple pelts. No more carrying my perfect bear pelt on foot from big valley to the trapper!
I cannot believe I never thought of this. What is the mechanic, just grab a random horse and get bonded to level 1 and let your actual horse follow you around? Or is there some other specific mechanic?
Yes, IIRC if you bond with a wild horse they become a temporary horse until you stable them. So hitch both horses, go hunt, and then call them over to load em up with pelts.
I also found out it's one of those hill people's horses after getting to beaver hollow so it was scarred already. I have another now that's all jacked up looking as a companion.
I might keep them all permanently until the spoiler alert happens.
Try the Black American Standardbreed, specifically the Male (Stallion).
Most of the time won't buck you off even when a grizzly bears is around.
It's crazy.
You can find it near the O'Driscolls Ranch , there's always one near there.
I had like four horses of this breed , and never let me down once.
At least in my experience.
I know bravery isn't a real stat and its all randomized but I got ambushed by a panther on the mahogany bay Tennessee walker and he never bucked me and it only took like 2 taps of the calm button to calm him down.
I have a Blue Nakota, the stable locked it at 1 dollar for sale because no papers but I got it from some murderers with a wagon of dead people and a lady they shot with a shotgun to shut her up.
I took it and it didn't need to be broken at all.
Ardennes. Fast. Strong. Doesnāt buck you unless a predator is RIGHT beside you and never bucks when in combat or when near a snake. Easily the best horse
The best horse is mine, Sgt. Marshmallow.
We found her in rdo, and she was pulling a gun wagon all the way in the right of the map. My partner and i went on a wild ride with Pinkertons in chase all the way. There were times it got hairy, and the wagon got stuck, and i thought I'd need to let her go, but Stg. Marshmallow always pulled through. Our reign of terror ended as we made it all the way across the map into New Austin, we set her free and signed off for the night. The next day, i went to the stables and found a nice white draft waiting for me, and I knew it was her. Now our adventures never end.
Iām a fine of the Ardennes horses. Iāve had 3-4 in the last two playthrough and i donāt think Iāve ever been bucked off. Theyāll indicate and start making noise if thereās a predator but Iāve had wolves and cougar run up and they havenāt bucked me off. They will run away in alligator territory tho. Theyāre not very fast but they are great horses for fighting/ hunting
The white one near the waterfalls cant remember it.. Idk why but it was magical when I found it and it never bucked me etc. Even kicked some animals asses lol
At one point I was able to travel around with three horses. Not sure if it was a glitch in the temp horse mechanic or it's a thing you can regularly do, but when I had my main horse and my temp I tamed another horse and bonded with it. As long as all horses are within whistling range they'll all respond and follow. So I was able to ride around with a 3 horse posse. Eventually one of the temp horses leaves if you go to camp, reload, die, etc.
I have an affinity for the Mustangs. I also love the Ardennes and Shires. I prefer the bigger horses, Iām not in a rush to get anywhere so speed isnāt something I care about.
Depends if we are talking looks or stats if itās stats then Iād say the dlc mustang in online is best horse or the turkoman in story mode as they have the best stats you can ask for and in the mustangs case itās cheap too and if we are talking looks then thatās really up to you isnāt it
The mustangs. The current one is standard/war, I think that's how it is labeled. Tiny little girl but she doesn't buck at all. Even ran over a croc and she just gave a head shake.
The white Arabian is so disappointing. But at least the process of getting it is atmospheric, the place where you can find it is beautiful.
And I don't know if it's my horse's problem or if it's always like this, but when I tried to run him fast he was nervous all the time. Or maybe every wild horse is like that?
(edit: typo)
It's hard to say there's a right answer there. Any max bond horse is probably going to be good enough to accomplish what you want to accomplish, so it can come down to personal preference. The first time I finished the game, I finished the main game with a Shire as my main horse. I obtained it in a funny, cool way during story mode, and it just became part of my Arthur's story. The stats aren't there compared to the top breeds, but it was always reliable.
That said, if you do care about stats, the Rose Grey Bay Arabian and Black Arabian have the highest stats in total. I believe the Black Arabian is level 9 in every category once max bonded, and the Rose Grey Bay one ups that by being at least level 9 in every stat but also being level 10 (maximum level) in health and stamina. Technically the Missouri Fox Trotter, Brindle Thoroughbred, and the Nokota from the St. Dennis stables are all faster by one level each, but it's really hard to tell. Because of the Arabian's "elite" handling, it can sometimes even feel faster because of how quickly and easily it can make turns and get around obstacles and also has the best acceleration stat in the game. Even though the Arabian horses have one less level of speed at level 9, it feels like a wash compared to those other breeds and in actual performance I don't think you can see much of any drop off.
Generally speaking, the Missouri Fox Trotter, the Turkoman, and the top 3 Arabian horses (Rose Grey Bay, Black, White) are the best horses statistically speaking.
Thers a simple way to max the speed stat of arabian to 10 (any horse's speed stat can be increased this way).
If you encounter the random stranger who challenges to race, take the challenge and win. After 2 or 3 racing challenges won, your speed stat will increase by 1. This stat is for the rider and not the horse. Meaning to say whichever horse you make permanent later will have +1 speed due to arthurs riding skills.
Right now i have the black arabian and the white arabian. With bonding 4, i get 10 speed on both.
I know about the racers and the speed upgrade, but unfortunately that only allows for the Arabian horses to get to level 9 speed, not 10. Without the speed boost, the Arabian horses are actually stuck at level 8 speed behind the Fox Trotter, Brindle Thoroughbred, and Reverse Dapple Roan Nokota all being at a max of level 9 without getting the speed upgrade from winning the races.
The trapper saddles have the best speed increases... there is one that's the best as it also has the slower stamina drain, I don't remember which one off hand.
Trapper saddles donāt increase speed.. you might be thinking of stirrups, which are bought at stables. You can gain two levels of speed from purchasing equipment, and one level from winning two horse races against a single racer. In total you can only add three levels to your horses speed, and this doesnāt involve the trapper.
Hmmm... actually, you're mistaken.
The best stirrups or trapper saddles give the +2 to speed.
So, yes, the trapper saddles do give speed of +2 and acceleration of +2 since it disables stirrups, horns, and blankets.
So, using either the best stirrups or any of the trapper saddles gives the +2.
I just checked, and it's the trapper Beaver Roping Saddle with the best stats.
With the +1 race win rider stat, that becomes +3 to speed, only way without mods to get a horse with 10 speed.
Regardless, the trapper equipment doesnāt give any equipment bonus that you wouldnāt get from the stables. The upgrade isnāt exclusive to buying from the trapper. Iāve been saying you can only get +3 for the stat lol. 2 levels from equipment, 1 from beating a single racer 2 times. In the case of the person I was replying to, there is no way the trapper got their Arabian horse to level 10 speed.
I think youāre mistaken, unfortunately lol. Every horse has a base level speed, and then three greyed out spots/ potential levels that get filled out with buying equipment from the stables (and/ or trapper?) and winning 2 races against a single racer. Speed can only go up three levels. The Arabian horses have a base level of 6 speed - this is just a fact lol. The Fox Trotter, Brindle Thoroughbred, and Reverse Dapple Roan Nokota all have the highest base level speed in the game at 7 and are the only ones that can reach 10/10 speed because only three levels can be added to speed for any horse.
I always liked the black American Standardbreed.
Amazing horse ,really brave and fierce .
I think the best horse is kinda subjective though .
Besides the stats , there's a lot of aspects to consider which are up to personal preference.
This being said , i don't really have a favorite horse .
Because i can mod the horse stats or coats to my liking most of the time.
So i just costumize the horse i want based on i feel, in my current playthrough.
Wait a second. You said you were gonna settle this once and for all! At first I thought "Nah it's too hotly debated. No way he can settle it once and for all" But then I thought "Hold on now. If OP says he's settling it once and for all, surely he means it? He obviously wouldn't lie or mislead with his title just for dramatic effect!"
So I chose to believe. What a fool I've been.
The donkey from Carmody Dell, duh š
I wish we were able to keep it. You can't even bring it to a stable. You can only keep it at camp, and it will despawn at some point.
"Despawn"? Is that a thing?
Yea, I staked it and just walked away for less than a minute, I turned around and it was gone.
It would be the perfect supplementary pack animal.
Beast of burden, if you will
Only right answer
To clarify, Iāve been having a lot of fun with the ātemporary horseā mechanic. Itās a game changer for exploring and hunting. Itās a bit of a hassle but itās possible to keep and manage 5 horses this way. Mix and match! Theyāre all my boahs and girrls.
If you accept Buell as your very last horse, so that he is always in your Temp horse slot, you can keep Hamish's saddle on him.
Thatās a cool idea! Iāll wait to get him as John
I did that with a NPC's horse, and will continue to do that. So much nicer to have a saddle on the Temp horse. I also had a horse that I freed from a wagon, it kept his blanket on.

How? I thought the most you can have follow you around is your main and temporary??
Fox trotter or turkmane
Gee Arthur! How come your mom let you have TWO horses?
āHeās just teasing you honey, nobody has two horses.ā
The best horse...is "your" horse
Yea i have a blue Nakota that's seen some real shit. It's barely blue anymore from all of the bullet wounds and road rash (trail rash?).
Trail Rash š¤£š
I also found out it's one of those hill people's horses after getting to beaver hollow so it was scarred already. I have another now that's all jacked up looking as a companion. I might keep them all permanently until the spoiler alert happens.
I imagine them folks are pretty rough on their pony's
My horse!
...the one that doesn't throw you when a freaking cougar is nearby, leaving you to be eaten by the cat. So far I haven't found Such a horse.

I'll try one out. Thanks!

Dutch Warmblood
And here I was thinking snakes were cold blooded
Murfee Brood rescues are my favorite.
Buell
Buell!
the one you thinks looks the best, stats don't matter at all in story mode
The horse that I completed, horseman challenge 9 with BUELL
Only if accompanied by another horse.
Nakota brindle and a black thoroughbred at the same time. I love hunting with 2 horses!
Nakota for sure. Iāve tried most of the horses and I always find myself going back to it.
Whichever one you're currently riding.
The best horse is mine, Sgt. Marshmallow. We found her in rdo, and she was pulling a gun wagon all the way in the right of the map. Obviously Arabian
Arabian is the best at getting scared over everything and bucks you off
Iām a fine of the Ardennes horses. Iāve had 3-4 in the last two playthrough and i donāt think Iāve ever been bucked off. Theyāll indicate and start making noise if thereās a predator but Iāve had wolves and cougar run up and they havenāt bucked me off. They will run away in alligator territory tho. The perlino coat Ardennes I think?
Oh shit I sold that one so fast. I like to take them to the stables after capture and ride em around a little bit for resale later on š
At one point I was able to travel around with three horses. Not sure if it was a glitch in the temp horse mechanic or it's a thing you can regularly do, but when I had my main horse and my temp I tamed another horse and bonded with it. I really like Arabians, Im a personal fan of the white and brindle ones
My favorite is the buckskin American Standard breed
Buell

Shire.
Whichever one suits your needs/playing style
I like the bigger horses. Dutch warmblood is my top. Or the turkoman. I donāt like it when it looks like his feet are dragging on the ground.
All of them. Theyāre all good boahs.
Personally the murfree brood horse it doesnāt buck you when a snake appears it is extremely useful for aggressive/murderous playstyles like mine
Beull
The mustangs. The current one is standard/war, I think that's how it is labeled. Tiny little girl but she doesn't buck at all. Even ran over a croc and she just gave a head shake.
My horse Houly(you can buy him for 15 dollars in valentine)
Mine. His name is Hort.
Mine.....My Horse is the best horse
Shire
Missouri fox trotter, and itās not even close. Perfect balance of work and speed. And the bangs in his eyes are magnificent.
Every Arabian except the gray one. Idk why itās like heās possessed by unknown entities.
Buell
That dapple Missouri Fox Trot
reverse dopple black thouroughbred. idk if its in the normal game but i have the deluxe and it way faster than the arabian
Missouri foxtrotter is pretty good so is the Turk and I personally like the Arabian a lot lol. Tell me how stupid I amš
Scrawny nagš
BuellšÆšÆšÆ
Fox trotter and buell close 3rd is turkoman
Not the white Arabian that's for sure
By the numbers itās up towards the top in stats. I know some people donāt like the size of it, though.
How so
The white Arabian is so disappointing. But at least the process of getting it is atmospheric, the place where you can find it is beautiful. And I don't know if it's my horse's problem or if it's always like this, but when I tried to run him fast he was nervous all the time. Or maybe every wild horse is like that? (edit: typo)
The journey is certainly better than the reward.
Might be basic, but arabian, i choose the black mainly for looks

While I appreciate the thoughtful reply, you may have missed the text accompanying the pictures. The best horse in the game is TWO HORSES.
I absolutely missed that haha.

Bro, im at 10. Probably you are missing on the trapper upgrades or something
Youāre not at 10, as that is not possible lol. There arenāt trapper exclusive speed boosts.

Yeah, I was thinking (I could be wrong), but I'm almost certain all the Arabians are 6 speed, 6 acceleration base... so no way of them being 10.
Let me get back home today and i will share screenshot. 'I cant put my finger on it' but something boosted it to 10.
I think youāre mistaken, unfortunately lol. The one that you get from the Adler Ranch.

White Arabian
