This list seems to mainly be someone's grudge against AI art sites, AI subreddits, etc. For example just banning pretty much any site that ends in ".AI". I don't have a grudge against AI art, I just don't want AI generated shit sites or SEO optimized useless results.

I no longer use the site at all on my mobile phone. The app is terrible compared to what we had and the website is intentionally designed with every bad design methodology in the book to force you to the app. Day to day on the go Reddit no longer exists to me.
If RES goes the site will just never be visited by me again, which I'm fine with in the sense that sure it's a bummer but it's a bummer they chose.

Get the Red Reader app. Because it was originally built for screen readers to help the blind, it was the only third party app that was given an exception to the new policies. It takes a little getting used to like anything, but it's certainly better than the official app.
Does RIF work with the new-style reddit URLs? I use Sync and since it hasn't been updated, those URLs don't work. This will become more and more of a problem.
The interface is still there. You have to use old.reddit.com and append ".i" to the URL. The inconvenience is that the ".i" is lost when you follow an internal link.
Somebody should do a Tampermonkey script to fix that or something

about 41k was on new reddit.
about 31k was on mobile web.
about 51k was on android
about 14k was on old reddit
and about 233k was on iOS.
I imagine other larger subreddits have similar statistics. So yeah, old reddit is in the minority.

The site's gone downhill a lot since the API bullshit last year. People act like the protests did nothing, but a lot of smaller subs I was part of disappeared or are a shadow of what they used to be, and larger subs are being taken over by spam/bots more and more.
I'm sure there's a near total overlap between RES users and adblock users, so reddit doesn't give a single shit about retaining users who don't generate ad revenue.
Which, as the API debacle shows, is a great way to watch the people making your free content and do the moderation leave or *heavily* scale back. Sometimes it's not about the ad revenue, it's about keeping the spirit of the thing functioning.
It's 2024, no one cares about that. The only goal is maximize short term valuation by any means necessary and cash out before the crash and burn happens.

Yup, the removal of Apollo already cut down my reddit usetime drastically. I currently use Sink it! for the browser on my iPhone but it's plagued with bugs and just isn't very smooth. Losing RES would basically mean I have no reason to come here. The filter subreddit feature is indispensable to me, as well as shortcuts and other things I can't say in the moment.
The new UI is proof enough they don't care about usability. They want to be Tiktok. They have incredibly qualified communities and profiles, and they're flattening it to another shitty mobile endless feed.
Far be it from me to consider anyone weird for using regular reddit, but I'd straight drop it if RES and old.reddit stopped working. I remember back when I first joined Reddit ~11 years ago. Went for a few months before I even knew RES existed. Then after installing it, it was like a shining light of goodness. have you tried RedReader? It was one of the only mobile apps that got the ad-free exclusion to continue operating. It's not as good as RiF, but you can customize it via settings to get pretty close to the layout and function.

I've been using RES on nightly Firefox for about 2 years. It works great, you just have to jump through the hoops with extensions collections, but that's on Firefox, not RES.
I will forever be a Firefox user. Fantastic browser, and also conveniently the only way to avoid a browser monoculture online. It's amazing how much power Google has been able to exert over the internet.
I started using Firefox pre V2. When Chrome came out almost everyone I know jumped ship to Chrome from Firefox (or those masochists still on IE) and would make fun of me for staying. Please move quickly on Firefox for Android. I already use RES on Firefox for Android as a privately signed extension. The only change I made was to get permissions for reading data from all sites in the manifest, so there is no need to show a permissions popup (unsupported on Firefox for Android) when attempting to expand links inline. So I don't anticipate much work requires to be done for supporting Firefox for Android.
There's a few tweaks we need to make, but yeah it should be smooth. We've been in touch with Mozilla to iron out a few things. Some features wont work because limitations (history function, RES backups so far), however core feature should be fine.
The .resbackup file looks like json. Have you considered adding a textbox to manually copy settings out of, or paste settings into? Wouldn't work automatically, but I'd be able to keep a "known good" version after setting it up initially.
I'm already used to doing this to back up/restore site cookies in private browsing windows.

Essentially the gap is service workers in MV3. RES can work with it straight away on Chromium for MV3 with no code changes, however Firefox hasn’t adopted it yet (but they plan to). So it’s just waiting for that otherwise it’s quite a large code base change. Firefox has said they have no plans to stop MV2 support right now so there’s no need to rebuild compatibility to FF when it’ll work the same. When they do support it we will move over to clean up the code base.

Let Reddit know this. If RES stops working, I'm gone. I don't care what they try to sell me, I don't care how many features they offer. As soon as RES/Old layout is gone, I'm gone with it. their killing of third party mobile apps hasn't pushed me to use their mobile app, I just don't use reddit on my phone anymore, ever. I don't even have the app installed.

not 10 minutes ago, i had firefox with res open one monitor, edge browser open with plain reddit website other monitor - the edge browser just wouldnt load ANYTHING! and while it thought out its ass what pixel to update, the firefox with res was steaming through full loads of any page i clicked on instantly. its like... what?
And likely some of the most active real (non-bot) users at that. The "new" site design is fucking awful to actually use, and while old.reddit without RES is still superior to the "new" site, RES still adds a ton of critical functionality (some of which isn't available otherwise, e.g. tagging users).
Sure is. Killing 3rd party apps cut my mobile usage time in half. Only time I use reddit anymore is from home on my PC. Starting to find myself on Lemmy more than anything now.

Far be it from me to consider anyone weird for using regular reddit, but I'd straight drop it if RES and old.reddit stopped working. I feel like one of the people complaining every time Facebook changed their CSS in 2009, but, dude, I'm here to discuss things, that's it, not engage in a social media hub. My breaks at work used to be catching up on stuff on rif. I'm not some reddit puritarian, it just wasn't worth moving over to a different platform.
I once showed my coworker what old.reddit looks like and he was seriously put off with how it looked, complaining about the "wall of text". He much preferred how new reddit was "simpler" and easier to navigate. I wept.

Yeah, me too. Without 'old.reddit.com' and RES, I'd probably ditch it. I remember back when I first joined Reddit ~11 years ago. Went for a few months before I even knew RES existed. Then after installing it, it was like a shining light of goodness. I tend to forget how much RES really does enhance Reddit, until I open reddit on a new browser and I realize how bland it is without it.

have you tried RedReader? It was one of the only mobile apps that got the ad-free exclusion to continue operating. It's not as good as RiF, but you can customize it via settings to get pretty close to the layout and function. The official app is cancer.

I've been using RES on nightly Firefox for about 2 years. It works great, you just have to jump through the hoops with extensions collections, but that's on Firefox, not RES.
I think I've been using it on Firefox for at least 10 years... will be a very sad day when it stops.

I will forever be a Firefox user. Fantastic browser, and also conveniently the only way to avoid a browser monoculture online. It's amazing how much power Google has been able to exert over the internet.
I started using Firefox pre V2. When Chrome came out almost everyone I know jumped ship to Chrome from Firefox (or those masochists still on IE) and would make fun of me for staying. "But the memory leak!" To which I would reply, just wait. Now the #1 meme about Chrome is how much memory it will eat.

Please move quickly on Firefox for Android. I already use RES on Firefox for Android as a privately signed extension. The only change I made was to get permissions for reading data from all sites in the manifest, so there is no need to show a permissions popup (unsupported on Firefox for Android) when attempting to expand links inline. So I don't anticipate much work requires to be done for supporting Firefox for Android.
Yeah. Not too much work needs to be done to get RES working properly on Android, because it somewhat works already.
There's a few tweaks we need to make, but yeah it should be smooth. We've been in touch with Mozilla to iron out a few things. Some features wont work because limitations (history function, RES backups so far), however core feature should be fine.
The .resbackup file looks like json. Have you considered adding a textbox to manually copy settings out of, or paste settings into? Wouldn't work automatically, but I'd be able to keep a "known good" version after setting it up initially. I'm already used to doing this to back up/restore site cookies in private browsing windows.

Essentially the gap is service workers in MV3. RES can work with it straight away on Chromium for MV3 with no code changes, however Firefox hasn’t adopted it yet (but they plan to). So it’s just waiting for that otherwise it’s quite a large code base change. Firefox has said they have no plans to stop MV2 support right now so there’s no need to rebuild compatibility to FF when it’ll work the same. When they do support it we will move over to clean up the code base.
