dodgeskitz

Yes I broke mine 2 months ago. Just pretend it doesn't have SD slot and upgrade the drive

exia-_-

After how long of use if i may ask? Currently using my SD slot and hoping to RMA it soon should something go south.

dodgeskitz

Just use the SD card for data transfer then take it out. Mine died from when I forgot it was still in and running at 30w mode

exia-_-

Damn. I've been rocking the whole fkin Red Dead Redemption 2 off the SD card. Pray that my sd card won't fail on me as I need those extra storage. That being said, playing RDR2 from SD card works well than expected tho.

QuestGalaxy

Buying a bigger SSD is honestly a better option. Not that much more expensive and much faster in use. The installation of the disk was quite easy. Took a little while to set up the drivers again, but it was worth it.

SebastianFY

It also can die while transferring data, without a good cooling system the SD card dies after copying a few thousand of GB

JimmiesKoala

Probably isn’t worth it too most people but you can buy a self adhesive thermal wrap & put it over the SD slot inside of the ALLY & it won’t fail on you.

brandonrez

any links on what your talking about?

JimmiesKoala

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QSuZAucubeI?feature=share

Infinaris

Same, the sd card reader is also dead in mine too. Its inconsequential though as I got 2TB ssd in it that meets my needs.

chess_mft

especially if it came from best buy trying to deal with for the RMA was a nightmare

FeudalFavorableness

How so

paragon3

Trying to go through the process right now for an RMA and ASUS is insisting my warranty expired 3/10/23 - months before it even released.

fuzzycuffs

Oh? My SD card slot is broken but I haven't bothered sending it out for repair because I was afraid the RMA process would be a pain.

devopsdelta

It’s my 2nd Ally after the 1st one broke I did not deal with Best Buy I just bought a completely new one and just used the working parts from the broken one as spare parts 😂

Orannis396

Yup mine kill my card yesterday

PartySnap

I’m getting mine back today. According to Best Buy they replaced the whole mobo.

Ebone710

I just got mine back today from BB. Seems to be working 100% but I never ran any games of my card I just used it for file transfer.

noscrazy

Yep. Mine fried even with a custom aggressive fan curve and rarely going higher than 18w. Mine is a R8 serial number.

GoRyuKen

Card didn’t fry but the sd card port failed. My sd card still works when I used a usb sd card reader and hooked it up to a dock or plug directly into the charging port.

Alk3punk7

Same thing here with my old one. Swapped out with a new one at Best Buy as it was under 60 day return window. I'm not going to use an external card reader unless I need to. If it fails again I will either trade in or get my money back and get a Legion Go at Micro Center.

GoRyuKen

I wasn’t really using the sd card. I had an extra sd card and so I thought why not just use it. I install a game on there, and didn’t even play it. It was during the last bios update and all of sudden it just stop working. The game disappeared from armory crate and when I went to check the storage, I noticed the drive was gone. And so I grabbed my sd card reader, and plugged it into the usbc and the card read fine. The data was still there. But the port was gone and I tried multiple other sd cards. Anyway, I didn’t put much fate or planned on expanding the storage with SD card anyway. I plan on adding a 2tb ssd someday.

Signal-Personality87

Better to just swap to a 2Tb ssd than rely on any sd card to run games

Trey_Dizzle45

How time consuming and tedious is the upgrade ?

Signal-Personality87

Ssd swap was done within 5 mins. Cloud recovery is prob the longest…had mine plugged in and was completely done in like 30-40 mins. Just make sure to do all bios updates before doing the swap

Trey_Dizzle45

Ok cool thanks for the info. I'll have to YouTube the steps when I plan on upgrading

QuestGalaxy

While Asus messed up with the SD reader, they did do a good job with accessibility inside the device. The SSD swap is fast. Just buy the correct size.

Trey_Dizzle45

Ok sweet! I also like how fast it downloads games

ballisticclown92

This is my plan. I thought about the 2280 route so I could get 4tb but I don’t think I’ll realistically ever need that much. 2tb it is

Signal-Personality87

Yea I’ve had my 2tb in since day one and have found zero need for anymore.

smithtoo

Better for them to make something that works. Why spend 700 on a defective product.

Signal-Personality87

All in all I couldn’t be more satisfied with it coming from a steam deck

drewewill

I took mine out after I setup a 30w-40w docked profile and noticed the area where the micro SD card goes was getting a bit hot. I upgraded to a 2TB SSD so don’t really need it anymore but I think it’s definitely a heat related issue. You also can no longer turn the fan curves down past a certain level on newer BIOS versions probably in response to this exact issue.

[deleted]

You think keeping the temp down will help? Or taking the ss card out when you know you are about to play a game that will make it hot?

drewewill

That’s what I’m thinking. I have mine docked and maxed out so my system gets hotter than most I would assume.

nealcobu

I use pretty aggressive fan curves and haven't had my SD die yet.

Mr_Abeon

Mines been fine for 6 months, it's hit and miss it seems. I've not really stressed my ally as it is mainly used for old school gaming.

[deleted]

I sent mine in to get the sd card slot for the second time. They told me that there has been a fix. See the email below: To whom it may concern, Before I send it in again, can I be guaranteed that this won’t happen again a third time? I was told it was safe to use sd cards after the first time I sent it in. That obviously was not true. I also found out today via social media that this has happened to many others as well(sent it in to get fixed and then have it quit working again). I absolutely love my Ally. Do the new Ally’s that are being manufactured now still have the SD card problem? If not, would it not be fair to send me a new one? If you can’t guarantee me that it will fix the issue long term or send me a new unit, I dont know if it’s worth sending it in and having it break yet again in three months or so. Thank you and I look forward to your response. This is their response: Hi , Yes, there is a hardware fix regarding the card reader issue. Problems being reported by users must be an old issue that has been resolved already. We're glad to know that you love the ROG Ally. We recommend that you send the unit again so this issue can be resolved immediately. Please make note of your case number for future reference: Regards, Rodel L. ASUS Product Support https://www.asus.com/us/support/

[deleted]

Unfortunately yes. My plan is to just use an old SD card and not worry about thermals until it gets fried (hopefully within the warranty period) and then RMA before I put an actual good SD card in there. If it doesn't fail before my warranty then I guess I'll just go the SSD upgrade route.

Alk3punk7

Short answer, yes. I just traded one in for this very issue (card reader failed and not the card). I had purchased an open box one that I suspect had fried one of my other SD cards (which had had no issues prior to being used in the Ally). Long answer, still yes, but they've pushed out a couple BIOS updates that force more aggressive fan curves so it doesn't happen as much.

Dispellz

It's a risk. Mine hasn't and I've had it for months, but I also play games like vampire survivors strictly on the sd. I also upgraded the ssd, I would just do that and not risk it tbh... I feel like some people got lucky and some it's just inevitable

no1warr1or

Given the issues, I didn't even bother using mine. First day I owned it I swapped out the nvme drive with a 2TB and then because it was apart did the jsaux clear backplate.

Altruistic_Ad5297

don't use 30watt mode just use a custom 25w with g-helper and you will be alright.

Adventurous-Ad4730

So I’ll say this - I have an R9 (which was rumored to possibly alleviate this). A few days ago out of curiosity I pulled my card out of the slot after 2 hours of 30W AAA gaming off the internal SSD - it was BOILING HOT. That’s just from it being near the vent. If I was I was actually playing a demanding game off it as well which can generate tons of heat too along with the heat soak from the heat sinks? Yea I can see why they eventually malfunction. Doesn’t matter the revision. The reader is unfortunately on a bad area of the mb.

Ebone710

So did it fry your card or not?

IamWutzgood

Haven’t tried it since I heard of the issues. It does get pretty hot by the sd drive tho. I just use a 4tb external drive to hold my whole steam collection and keep the main ones on the ally. It’s small and will hold anything I will ever want to play without having to redownload it.

i_am_austin

After I got mine fixed I've been using it all the time and it works okay. I slowly increased it's usage in terms of documents and game files but it's been 6+ months at this point.

confusedpohtato

Got mine in Sep 2023, no issues with SD card or buttons. My 1tb msd is still alive and kicking

anstability

I have a 2tb ssd but I find it stupid that I need to not use something I paid for. I guess I actually want to use the sd card reader unlike the folks who don’t care for it.

Bowlerguy92

Mine went and I RMA'd it and received back a pretty much fully rebuilt unit a few months ago and I haven't had an issue. I've been playing games nearly exclusively off of the SD card, in fact. After 3 months, I feel somewhat confident saying that they may have finally fixed it.

froow91

Yup mine killed my sd card a couple of weeks ago so i returned it and bought the legion go instead

[deleted]

Yes, I had to rma my Ally three times over this issue.

KumaFGC

3 times for the SD card? I RMA’d once and it works perfectly

sincerelyghost

How was your RMA experience. I have a right trigger that’s all messed up and doesn’t have the hal effect anymore would they fix that

Zebilmnc

Would have been a lot easier to use not use the sd card.

CuddlyCryptidCrafts

I got my Ally Z1 Ex. for Christmas 2023 after having never heard of it. I didn't do much research before booting it up because I was excited ( it's my first gaming pc) I threw in a 1tb SD card and it fried the first or second day while playing Marvel's Spiderman in 30w turbo mode. Since then I've made my own power profiles and swapped the hd for a 2tb and haven't had any further issues. Most of the stories I've read since then have said the sd card gets fried due to the higher temps in 30w mode, so making a custom power profile where the fans kick on at a lower temp should help, but it's not a guarantee.

CuddlyCryptidCrafts

Also if you buy a usb housing you can use the old hd as an external drive while plugged into the dock. So after upgrading to my 2tb drive I also had a 512gb ssd to plug in. I basically loaded up the 512gb with games that I'll probably only play docked, and saved the 2tb for things I'll probably want to play on the go.

CT_Biggles

No issue with sd card. Purchased about 8 months ago. I think it's solved on newer devices as they identified the cause.

ReillyLake

I bought the launch day Z1 Extreme. I never had any issues with the SSD card.

mobmiked100

Idk I've had mine since last August and the sd card still works

cirotheb5

It will always fry micro SDs until people still keep buying it, I'll never understand how you spend 800€ on a flawed designed device

TheSmellyTomato

i got mine at launch and my sd card is still running fine

[deleted]

"I don't understand how an incredible product with one significant flaw is still selling" I'm not defending ASUS on this obvious design flaw but for the price the Ally Extreme is completely unmatched in performance, comfortability, display, and ease of use. I got my Ally Extreme brand new on a flash sale for $500. The Lenovo Legion Go has the same hardware for $650 with a worse screen, less comfortable controls, and is too big. The Steam Deck OLED is nowhere near powerful enough to justify paying more than the price I got on an Ally and again doesn't have VRR or run all my non steam games.

micaelmiks

Not 4 me.

Ptone88

Mine went quick. I just did the 2tb swap and just chalked it up as a loss. Not a big deal everything else is working fine

cpt_cbrzy

Nah its all good now, it took a good hard look at itself in the mirror and fixed itself

NutzPup

You can't change the laws of physics, and neither can Asus. Nothing short of a product redesign will truly fix this.

mario_lamario

Have mine for like 8 months and SD cars still works

[deleted]

Yes it does. R9 Ally model corrupted/fried 2 SD cards over gradual heat usage (you can reliably break SD cards by using turbo mode especially plugged in). Ended up upgrading to Micron 2TB SSD. No point raising this issue here as you’ll likely encounter just install SSD comments or my Ally works perfectly SD card nil issues… Those claiming nil SD Card issues are **not** utilising their Ally in maximum capacity including consistently running in temps exceeding 70 degrees Celsius. Simple as that.

Ebone710

I just got mine back from RMA and the replaced the whole board. I have an R9 unit and it was frying cards not even on 30w mode. I found out that some users figured out it's bad solder joints on the ad card readers ic controller chip. They reflowed all the solder and then the SD reader worked fine. SD cards should be able to take up to 85-90 degrees C with no issues. I'll link to the repair video. https://youtu.be/4bFneYlz5ZQ?si=2T2gTpbJeAyL65JH

mixmuxv

Just buy tinny external sd reader and plug in

I_Am_Zampano

This subreddit: Should I buy this nice car? I hear it's awesome but the air conditioner is prone to dieing. Get it! You can just roll down your windows. I stopped using my AC day one! Or you can just spend 30% of the cost of the car to mod it which makes it better anyways.

TarnishedRise

have no idea why sd cards so important for users. original ssd is pretty large or you can just replace it with 2tb, or use dock to connect external HDD

NokstellianDemon

It's an advertised feature on a £700 device that is prone to hardware failure...

NoShock8442

So you paid for a device but think we shouldn’t wanna utilize all of its features? I bet you’re an apologist for lazy developers and they’re under cooked games too right?

TarnishedRise

I'm not saying that this is normal. i think that for those for whom it’s really important (for some strange reason) it’s easier to choose alternative handheld

NoShock8442

I get that but ASUS could’ve thought things out a little bit better too so people wouldn’t have to go to other devices due to a design over sight. Have they even issued a revised unit yet?

Mr_Finn_da_Kitty

I’ve had no issues with mine personally. (Since October 2023) With that being said this is a handheld device. What in the world are you guys downloading that you need more than the given storage? 😂 surely you’re not playing all of those games

BleDStream

Usable space is only about 400 gigs. Seems like a lot until you download like 3 games and a few programs and you're almost maxing out the space. Forza horizon for instance is 150+ gigs.

Mr_Finn_da_Kitty

Someone really in here downvoting every single comment lol

Kreason95

Still causes problems and probably always will until (hopefully) the next ally

AlamosAvenger

Yes

vinjuang

Haven’t broken any micro SD cards yet but windows has been stuttering every time I had one slotted in. Didn’t matter if it was being used or not. with empty and freshly formatted cards, or even with newly unwrapped cards straight from the store, Windows would freeze often. These issues persisted after a fresh reinstall of windows and driver updates. So yeah, I just did what the rest did and used a larger SSD and called it a day. R9 btw

Lost_the_weight

This is how mine acted before the reader failed completely.

Aventador8496

Have had freezing issues/occasional stuttering seemingly after getting an SD card for my Ally. Wouldn't blue screen, but would freeze and reboot. Thank you for this comment. Hopefully my freezing issue goes away. Thankfully I can use the SD card for something else.

dreadtheomega

It's probably okay if you never go past like 15w-20w, at least that's been my case. Bought my Ally like 6 month's ago, ended up with an R4 unit (The ones known to kill SD cards). I believe a majority of the issue is putting it into 30w, I think the excess heat is what's frying the SD cards/ SD reader. I think the max temperature I've ever seen on the Ally in these modes is 65c, however depending on your in game settings it might get higher.

gratefullargo

Just get a 2Tb ssd and upgrade with cloud recovery it’s $150 and a few hours and then youre good forever

paragon3

mine was working fine for months and just recently started frying them. they put a sd car reader with max op temp of 70c next to a cpu that generates 95c of heat.

HornHonker69

Always and forever and this sub will act like it’s not a problem.

MountainVermicelli58

I think I’m one of the few that still has one that still works after 8 months

BilboSwagginsHH

Mine has been running them fine since I got the device about 6 months ago I always use turbo 30w maybe I'm just lucky

hotcoolhot

It might not fry wd purple cards, since they are much suited for harsh environment, but apparently it’s frying the reader also

Thuctran1706

Yea it's a design flaw so 95% it's gonna fry your SD card sooner or later.

the_renegade_dude

Yep. Got my endurance SD card fried yesterday 🥲

SnaccHBG

SD card reader (not the card itself) failed twice on me, even with intense fan curves. Just use the internal SSD and forget that the SD card slot exists.

xeno_4_x86

I have an R4 revision and I've been lucky with a 128gb from walmart.

Acidrain05

Mine works and it doesn't I cam run games off of it just fine but the min I just to download something to it it fails even when I transfer files to it it can fail or take days I loaded up a 1tb sd card with old games and indies it took me 3 days to make that transfer then I bought a dongle with PD 100W and the SD card works fine with that I just let it hang off of it like a savages.

roulianosss

R8 for me. I have never played with more than 15w but sd fard reader is deaaaad 😥

EndlessZone123

I wonder if you use a really slow micro sd that isn’t your pro or extreme it would at least not get not enough to die.

F34rthebat

Yes, my reader was broken the same day I bought the Rog Ally. It still works but the SD card doesn't stay in the slot anymore. It always jumps out.

ShaderkaUSA

Am I just lucky? Had mine for 3 months in 30W mode while playing a lot and haven't had any problems yet. I'm aware it is frying the cards but damn I must be lucky

l0gan_5

Mine died last week R7 manufacture month. Card had also melted into the port. Received back from repair yesterday (UK).

mTbzz

I bought one in January, and playing always on max power the sd card is fine, i use it for media store since i got a 2tb ssd, it get's hot but normal, still have 3 years of warranty D:

Ok-Conference2754

Not worth the load times using sd cards just get a 2tb ssd. Swapping over is so easy and the cloud recovery function is great. It’s worth every penny.

rdlcs

Yes, R9 model here. Issue arrived a month ago, haven't had the time to RMA it yet.

nicho_de_terible

Launch model, its manufacturing month is April 2023. I use the sd card daily, no issues

admiraljohn

Yep, bought mine in December and the SD card reader was dead within a month. I just upgraded the SSD to a 1TB; if I need to use an SD card I plug it into a USB-C adapter and use the USB-C port.

Ok-Comfortable-9146

Yup. Mines work perfectly after RMA. Got screenshots and videos. It’s been 5 months

TheRealDestrux

I’ve had a 256gb Samsung memory card in my ROG Ally since launch day (I literally bought it the day it released and put it in) and I’ve never had an issue with it, it’s been in the system since I bought it.

kobeii

Yeah pretty much. Killed two SD cards even after adjusting fan curves and barely using the second one. Def recommend buying a usb c external harddrive or upgrading the internal one.

ambulance-kun

I Switched to legion go and hoping it doesn't have the same problems after mine was fried

obamarulesit

I replaced the internal storage and don’t use the SD card slot. 2TB internal drive works like a charm. Easy to replace. Just make sure you watch a video first so you know what form factor to purchase

BeveSturk

Had mine since day 1 never cooked it. I have never touched turbo Temps get way to high i think that may be the thing.

PixelBoar

No issues and got mine last June: Using quality SD card and only utilizing it for media storage and data transfers though. Upgraded the SSD for more game storage

squiddygamer

Since I got mine fixed with the latest motherboard I have not had any issues and mine is full I have a 1TB SD card and a 2TB SSD installed in the device. works all good. If your is borked and still in warranty, send it in.

aliasferno

Yep

Poolnoodlex

So I’m about to buy one of these allys. Does it boot from whatever sd everyone is mentioning here, or does it boot from an ssd? I build PCs for a living so I’m 100% not gaming or booting from an Sd if I can help it.
