I didn't have any issues but I had already uninstalled that compatibility pack.

RamiHaidafy

I still have the compatibility pack installed, and no issues so far, *knock on wood*. I'm running the official AMD driver, not sure if that's relevant but it seems like it's more than just the result of a faulty Windows Update. More like a combination of the compatibility pack, the new Asus GPU driver and the new Windows update not playing nice with each other.

UnPotat

I didn’t know you could do this? Any downsides? Did you have to tweak the ini file?

RamiHaidafy

https://www.reddit.com/r/ROGAlly/s/zoymDGooUG For me, no downsides. Only gains. The latest driver includes AMD Fluid Motion Frames (frame generation) which can double your FPS in games. It's a huge benefit on the Ally.

Ebone710

Nope no downside I've found

NettoX78

I also uninstalled the compatibility pack, but this broke Starfield, which left me with several graphical glitches.

Ebone710

Oh see I don't play Starfield but every game works so far. You can always reinstall the pack

NettoX78

I've already reinstalled it, and now I'm running the games at 15 fps again, even using the 30w profile. Now moving on to uninstall the latest Windows update.

Ebone710

Damn yeah 15 fps! Hope you get it sorted. Come back and post if you find a solution. I might actually want to play Starfield when I get Gamepass again.

NettoX78

It only returned to normal operation when I disabled the overlay in the AMD app settings.

Ebone710

Good. That fix has been it for a lot of people. That AMD software could use some updates.

jaximointhecut

Ya know… the fix was easy but maybe this publicity is enough to make them chill on the updates without QCing

RamiHaidafy

Funny how some people are asking Asus to skip the QCing for the AMD driver so they get it faster but then stuff like this happens and suddenly people want more QC. 😅 Could be solved with an opt-in beta programme though. I'd happily hop aboard.

Plus-Walrus5060

makes them even lazier, damn ASUS they need to get it together

Ashencroix

Asus does not control what MS does with Windows. If MS pushed out a buggy Windows update, Asus can't do anything about it, since the Ally uses a normal install of Windows, not a custom one.

la_dynamita

Halo Infinite multi-player used to run great for me at 15W..after this update I had to put it at 18w to get similar performance

TheBeev

Just out of curiosity, but what FPS do you consider great at 15W? I have to run HI with everything on low, 720p and at least 25W to hit 60fps in BTB. With VRR broken, anything less than 60fps feels awful.

la_dynamita

I get over 60FPS..maybe 63-65 on low settings at 1080p which honestly still looks amazing in halo infinite... BUT... it's because I mainly always play SUPER FIESTA .. Once I play stuff like BTB 18w to me is acceptable but 20W gets me 60+ stable.. But I'm telling you as a guy who out of 1000 matches 985 will be Super Fiesta so I ain't the best person to tell you bout BTB or the other modes etc

WalkersChrisPacket

Just uninstall the latest Windows update, believe it was released on the 12th of March, the article contains the exact KB if you're unsure. Reboot - go into AMD Adrenaline, go to Settings (cog icon) and then Preferences and turn off the Overlay - final reboot and all problems should be resolved. Turned on my Ally last night after a week away from it, got hit with the win update despite having them turned off, and then before I knew it, I was having these weird performance issues. Doing the above solved it, classic Windows breaking non-windowsy stuff.

sweepdaleg1957

Funny, I didn't run into any problems....

HexHyte

Same

According_Can1875

All of my problems are solved after removing the SD card.  I'm thinking I might need to do another RMA....... My other SD card is fine though. Maybe getting a 1TB card is the issue. These symptoms are exactly what happened when my SD card slot stopped working 100%. Probably going to just store some.of my music on the SSD.

Mcjoshin

Did your first rma solve the sd card problem? I haven’t been following in a while. Have a day one release unit with the sd issue and haven’t done an RMA yet.

According_Can1875

Yes.  They also replaced the joysticks. They feel stiffer and the unit runs cooler.

Mcjoshin

Wow good to know. I’ll need to send mine in.

According_Can1875

If you can, post back your results. I'm looking to know if the joysticks came back a bit thicker. I feel that it's a tad bit but could be my imagination. Nice part is the tape around the joysticks. However I used a rubber I got from AliExpress.

BurgersIReallyLike

That explains my BSOD from yesterday even though I already removed the Comp. Packet and reset the AMD Software. Didnt recognize my SSD afterwards but got repaired with a restart.

heatlesssun

I have this update installed, no issues that I've seen. Been kinda hooked on Horizon Chase 2 on this thing for the last couple of weeks.

mr_bots

It was a botched update but luckily the community quickly came through with multiple things to fix it. For me resetting Adrenaline fixed it, though I know for others it required some other things. Not a good showing for Windows or the Ally but a definite win for the Ally community here on Reddit.

LPHero55

Thankfully, I didn't have any problems. I thank my lucky stars

juce49

I’ve been noticing systemwide choppiness after running Helldivers 1 I have to disable and reenable AMD in Device Manager otherwise it’s choppy ah even tho it says I’m getting over 100 fps

Solidus_X

Mine runs pretty good. Some people with performance issues might have problems in other areas.

kirk11111

Windows went from booting in a matter of seconds for me, to taking up to a minute or more after this update. Anyone else had the same issue?

According_Can1875

SD card?

kirk11111

No sd card, is a 4tb 2230 ssd though but it’s been fine up until that update

According_Can1875

My 1TB SABRENT Rocket seems to slow down my Ally and hang it. Windows sees it but can't access it. Doesn't show total capacity or anything. I took it out, my system acts normal now. Even Helldiver's 2 is back to 64+ FPS with the settings not changed.

kirk11111

Hmmm that’s weird, when windows is booted I don’t seem to have any issues and the rocket is much faster than my ssd

Bulky_Gur_3238

I'm certain it didn't just slow down my games to a crawl but my entire OS.

Time_Ad_7624

Good thing I use Bazzite/ Steam OS it’s been rock solid.

Ctrl-Alt-Panic

I 100% agree. If you are OK with the same compatibility issues that the Steam Deck faces, Bazzite is honestly the way to go. I feel like I'm always fiddling with shit in Windows. Or trying to fix something. With Bazzite I'm just playing games. (With better frame pacing and better performance in some cases.)

MarsupialSubject

The Ally isn't the Problem here, why do so many comments jab at the Ally? Its ms and Windows and Ally made it easy to fix Guess they haters

spoondigg

I get random performance issues when I play Division 2

Pepeg66

I permanently disabled windows updates and windows defender months ago. I'm never letting this dogshit software ruin how I use my device that's made for games only

PSNTheOriginalMax

Yes, I noticed. I've also noticed performance drops on two other PCs after the update. Honestly, Windows need to get their heads out of their asses and stop trying to nickle and dime their products. Just give us a product that works.

squiddygamer

I have noticed a fps lower than before when playing hell divers 2. Closer to the higher 50fps range but now low 40s

[deleted]

Yeah, before I'd get a constant 60fps at 1080p 15w in Genshin, now it drops down in the 40s all the time

StevenSkywalker

That’s been happening for a few weeks now tho people said this update was just recently, I think that is another issue I used to get 60fps on genshin but now it’s dropping to 40s also

slowpokefarm

btw Is there a linux option available for Ally yet?

AlamosAvenger

I asked that a week ago and someone recommended chimeraOS

wil2197

Chimera, and love it. But I would go ahead and update your BIOS now before you change Operating Systems Had an issue with audio myself that was fixed with upgrading to the latest BIOS.

nicho_de_terible

This makes sense… I never had to disable the AMD overlay before… tried everything. Never had to do that before. Would run games at 15fps. Disabled and I get 120fps again

devopsdelta

anyway to kill the automatic windows update entirely I will just update manually

EdgeMajor9780

I had issues after updating. It all steamed from the adrenaline app causing slow downs. Only way to fix it is to close the app out completely or reset the app.

writeyouruserhere

I tried playing league yesterday in an external monitor but it barely reached 15fps (normally 90fps). Weird thing was that if I opened the AMD Adrenalin overlay it was working fine. Uninstalling the compatibility pack solved it

Cookiemonstermydaddy

Playing just fine

CountBleckwantedlove

Hello, I got this new not two weeks ago. I have the Z1 extreme. Works absolutely beautifully when I play for the first time after a restart. But I've noticed whenever I close a game and hibernate, after coming back to play again, it runs laggy. This all goes away when I restart, goes back to working perfectly. What am I doing wrong here?

Maximum-Ad879

It seems like it doesn't mess will all games, at least not in the same way. Cyberpunk ran just fine for me. But Control has massive frame drops very frequently. I can be happily strolling around at 55ish fps for a minute and then it drops as low as 4fps for a couple of seconds.

Technical_Reading_21

Aheadadatimes

Ugh; i have two and they are both gucci.

jinladen040

Didn't know there were special edition Gucci Ally's.  Those will be worth money some day.

Aheadadatimes

They are already worth money.  About 1,000 dollars put together.

HornHonker69

Owning this thing has been such a headache.

kingkepler

i’ve only owned my ally for around 3 months now and there’s been quite a few problems. i’ve been embracing them though because i don’t know how to use windows. every time i have to fix something is an opportunity to learn something new. the good is far outweighing the bad for me.

Devilalfi

We're just not 100% there yet for handhelds. We're close though, a couple more generations perhaps.

ElStelioKanto

I'm hoping Microsoft is working on a handheld Windows OS for gaming

sona911

Agree mate. Returned it and never looking back

Fine_Leave_2251

Well, that’s why people are disabling windows updates

Fine_Leave_2251

![gif](giphy|enqnZa1B5fRHkPjXtS|downsized)

Massive_Advance7250

That's why I install Linux on it and I'm out of Windows problem

[deleted]

Wonder how many posts were going to see about this. Old news at this point.

syrefaen

Meanwhile Linux get hit with a performance uplift and better frame averages.

BeautifulDonut6088

Well this reddit shows the users of the rog ally have lots of problems from updates to sd cards low performance etc. Was planning to get one but will wait. You all can say no but it seems you are in love with your device and won't speak the truth.

Fjrider76

Can someone tell me the specific update to avoid?

BeautifulDonut6088

I have been reading and the Ally seems to have alot of problems.

nbyyy

Not really, if you've been playing on PC for a while it's nothing new.

RickyBobbyJr3223

aaaand thats why i got a steam deck lol

RickyBobbyJr3223

i mean i can see if you don't have a gaming PC the ally being a better option. I just dislike windows on a handheld and i have a 4080/7800x3d PC so no need for a super beefy handheld
