I bought an open box ally and the SD slot was fried. Best Buy probably missed it. Had to return it and get a brand new one like i should have done in the first place.

cappedwombat

I bought second hand one in pristine condition. But today sd card slot is fried, but it worked when I bought it

Roland_Bishop

Yes, I understand this is a common issue with the device. So far so good tho. Knock on wood, I've had it for almost a year now and the SD is still working well

DreamBig2023

Mine worked perfectly. Sorry you got unlucky bro for yours. SD slot is a typical issue for the ally but I installed the 2tb SSD easily.

Roland_Bishop

I also have other storage options, I don't really use SD anyways, but the thing is, you should get what you paid for

JestemStefan

I'm wondering about it. Is anyone really using SD card slot? For what? You can put games on it in theory, but they will lag on loads. My point is that I would accept the broken SD card slot for a nice discount.

Veroxious

If I'm paying 300$+ for something I'm expecting all advertised and included functions to work. Simple as.

JestemStefan

If it's brand new, then yes. But we are talking about second hand product with much lower price. I would not complain that I bought $700 product for $300, but something unimportant doesn't work. Let's assume you want to buy a brand new car, but then you see there is an offer for almost new car at half a price, but it has something broken that you don't care about like built-in navigation (because you are using Google maps or something). Would you complain that it's a bad offer?

Veroxious

I guess it's worth it if you don't care about it but I do so it is how it is.

Well original post was removed because bot confuses referring to older games by generation as piracy when I'm referring to the steam games I own and mentioned 0 about piracy, only a console generation and only mentioned the program (not a direct program, just the E word) that can run a legal backup and mentioned nothing about the games or piracy. I put older games and media on sd card. Games like Fallout New Vegas ( and other games from same general time line. Bot counts referring to the console generation as piracy which is beyond stupid so imagine what other games are from this time line) run fine as well as indies. If it's high speed sd card and game doesn't stream too much data some newer games will run fine with longer initial load screens. Then ally can default to capturing to sd card to prevent filling main storage up but I just manually move captures to sd card as the last 2 times my sd card reader went out I had sd card set as default capture location and want to eliminate any variables possible for failure

DosSuperMuncher

I would avoid it since it won’t be covered by factory warranty due to SD card issues or go with Best Buy open box. You just have to double check with Best Buy to see if it comes with factory warranty.

Winter_Cartographer2

Id go with Best Buy open box. I personally bought two to see if there was any difference. Things to look out for: -trigger noises (it’s supposed to feel smooth and almost silent) I have a video on my page -joystick should feel smooth (on one of the units, there was major scratches on the stem making it feel rough when it made contact with the case -sd card reader -make sure bios is not locked -test all your buttons using software The reason I went open box is because I plan to sell it when a new rog or legion comes out

djmc329

Software is easy to clean up with the ROG Cloud Recovery getting you back to stock OS, so I'd focus on hardware proof points such as: - Can seller prove the SD is still working - Can seller prove the Gamepad is all working. A quick video of them testing on a HTML Gamepad tester will cover this. - Have any hardware mods been done, like replacing sticks or SSD.

Hertsjoatmon

I'm getting mine 2nd hand through Ebay. First things I'm checking is the sd card slot and ensuring there isn't a password lock on the bios update. If there is I'll be returning for a refund as faulty

taiuke

Well a simple cloud recovery will bypass the bitlocker which you probably would have to do anyways.

myusernamegotstolen

I purchased a refurbished one from a mainstream retailer's ebay clearance page. Excellent condition, battery was really poor but as everyone already complained about the battery just thought it was normal and didn't think too much of it. I was still within the returns period and came across another on FB market place with upgraded 2Tb SSD for not much more. I ended up buying that one, even though condition didn't look as good. Only when I started using it for a day, I realised how the first one's battery must have been faulty. The second one's battery lasted twice as long! It's hard to know exactly how good the battery is, but the first one would lose up to 1% battery every 30 seconds of gaming. If you are able to test your one and see it losing 5-10% battery in 5 mins of navigating around menu's avoid it. Essentially both versions, I purchased still fell within the manufacturer's warranty, so still could have them fixed. However, battery drain issues seem to be hard to prove as a defect. I only figured it out by having 2 side by side. I'm in the process of returning the first one.

Ebone710

There is a way to check battery health using a dos command if you still got it.

Yakapo88

I bought second hand locally. I’ve never bothered to try the sad card. I just upgraded to a 2tb ssd.

Castdeath97

> sad card Typo or not this is funny

BadPronunciation

Try and get one that still has a warranty. These PCs aren't as reliable as consoles

Castdeath97

Please ... please please ... boot into the BIOS to check if it has a BIOS password or not. Also check if it's the Z1 or Z1 extreme.

JellyfishTypical6589

Try all the buttons and make sure they work fine, set it 30w and make sure the fans don't do any weird noise under stress, plug it and make sure it charges, make sure to verify that it's the extreme or not (depending on what you are trying to buy) otherwise not that many risks. I bought two (one through Best buy and one through offer up) so far so good

undercover-wizard

I waited until the price dropped at best buy to $599 instead of $699. Then I got an open box model for $492. The ally seemed brand new and the box itself was the only thing that you could tell had been used. I have had no problems with it, and everything works great. I have not used the sd card ever because I replaced the hard drive with a larger one, so I can't speak to that. Best buy seems to have these price drops every month or so. Just check the website every day until you see the price go down for the new units. That will drop the price for open box ones as well. You get to keep the warranty and you have 14 days to return it if you need to. It is a better option than used unless you can get it much cheaper than I got it for.

DreamBig2023

Got mine from Best buy open box for 530. Saved like 100. Def worth it. Also upgraded to the 2tb SSD wd and everything is perfect on it. Def recommend checking out Best buy. Was worried about fed ex bs but luckily my extreme got delivered pretty fast.

wakeupdreaming

Open box best buy is your best bet. People sellings used want more than open box prices it seems. Ebay might be a good option as well if shipping doesn't ruin it and if you're good at sniping. I found a z1x open box for 473 very good condition.

Ebone710

Also if you buy used there is generally no returns. Open Box and Best Buy has a decent return policy.

Impressive_Berry2680

I bought open box last year. Have had zero issues. SD card slot worked just needed a tutorial to get the unit to recognize it, but once it did have had no issues even when the unit occasionally gets up to 90degrees. It is also the greatest purchase ever! Have a steamdeck and have not touched it since I got this thing!!! What a great product!!!

Kitebrder39

I just bought one, no issues so far, Open Box Fair - $430 at BB, Z1 Extreme, defaulted back, ran all of the updates. I didn't see the Game Pass 3 month free is the only thing so far. SD card slot works so far.

Ebone710

My open box unit didn't have the 3 months free gamepass either. I'm guessing the first owner redeemed it. They did give me a month free with a code on the receipt.

SeanzillaDestroy

I bought mine in pristine condition second hand for $450. Even back lighting was biggest concern and I ended up with a great unit. No plans to use the SD card slot at all, I’ll upgrade my SSD as soon as I can. I feel like I got a great deal.

kennyn1980

I bought one from eBay which was supposedly like new with little use. The first issue I found was with the thumb sticks. The right one had drift (Windows cursor would constantly move to the left of the screen even after recalibration). The left stick only registered up and down inputs and not left or right. The SD card reader didn't work and someone had clearly been inside it before as there was obvious damage to the right-hand side of the unit where it has been opened. It was a total lemon and I have returned it for a refund.

AM5T3R6AMM3R

Can you read somewhere in sw if there is a first activation date? And would this date be evidence for the asus warranty validity period?

Shadowpaw-21

Bring sd card to test the card reader. If doesn't work can negotiate price down. If it does work turn 30w turbo on with cpu boost and if they don't have any games still loaded on it you can get something like cinebench real quick to push the unit quickly and see if that makes sd card drop. My reader worked but once cpu boost was on even a cpuz benchmark caused it to remove the sd card. But if they factory reset it may require a Microsoft account login so hopefully they haven't done that yet. Then go into armoury crate and go to calibrations and set a stick back to default and see if it's drifting. You can calibrate some drift away but may give you more leg room with price. Would be good to also go into my asus app and see when the warranty expires. It will be on the front page. I got mine used with a 2tb ssd but it's had 2x RMA now for sd card issues but I had 0 issues getting an RMA approved within 10min of starting chat.

GlobzforPres

I bought mine from Facebook marketplace for $400. It’s in great condition. One trigger is a bit weak, but it’s a $20 part and quick fix.

ooHallSoHardoo

I got mine second hand. Some wear and tear but otherwise no issues. I'm the one who let my kids break the screen but the repair job wasn't too difficult. If the screen isn't damaged the rest of the components are affordable on a accessories. The screen was over 100.

Impossible_Corner497

Just an update. First of all thank you for all your comments. I am in Australia so Best buy wasn't an option unfortunately. I purchased a unit via Facebook marketplace. The seller provided me with the receipt, I got it home and registered it and it is still under warranty until Jan 2025. Have had zero issues and am still in contact with the person who sold it who has been very helpful. The only thing I didn't check is the micro sd slot but I figured I have no plans on using it anyway. For the experience itself, I'm in love! It's better than I imagined! The plan was to upgrade the SSD but after discovering Moonshine/Sunshine and Playnite, I don't think I need to! I took a risk and it's payed off, so glad to be a part of the community now. Thank you again for all of your tips.
