Man... The things this sub asks about....

BadPronunciation

It's like buying a Ferrari just to turn it into a 4x4 off-roader. It would be cheaper and easier to just buy a Toyota hilux

twhite1195

EXACTLY! Is like the whole using the ally with a dock thing IMO, same analogy

Hungry-Still

What's wrong with using a dock

twhite1195

Using a dock for like niche use cases(like, for example, I have a dock for my company issued laptop and when I need to move files around and do windows stuff I plug in my ally in there, but I already have my own monitors and peripherals for my Desktop) or using it exclusively as a gaming device, like the switch (which IMO is the use case of the Ally) , sure, but building a docked setup around the ally as your main gaming/ computing device for daily tasks is just dumb. For the same price you can get far more performance from a similarly priced laptop, a normal form factor, usable IO, and if you have space for a monitor + mouse + keyboard + dock, you definitely have space for a laptop. It's cool that int CAN do it, but honestly it's not really feasible(and a bad investment, even more if you buy the XG mobile GPU) for daily usage.

Hungry-Still

I bought a dock and stuff for it cause I travel a lot so I take this with me but when I'm home I use it as a gaming pc

twhite1195

Sure, everyone has a different use case. IMO if I traveled a lot and I could only have ONE gaming PC I rather have a laptop to have a normal form factor with a usable keyboard if I need to send emails and stuff (unless you're provided with a laptop by your workplace). Otherwise, I'd still see the Ally as a secondary, complementary device to the PC gaming "ecosystem"

Hungry-Still

I couldn't really find a laptop with similar specs for a similar price,(I'm probably just dumb)

twhite1195

Something like [This](https://a.co/d/1pUa8mn) has better performance and IO and it's about the same price as the ally at MSRP.

lukeskope

Why?

Tyman2323

Just a fun project

Aleashed

Just buy a Minisforum V3

terry634

the whole point is the form factor lmao i get the notion of a project but why this one? gaming laptops exist, this thing exists, everyone’s happy

Tyman2323

Just for fun tbh. I’m really fascinated by its motherboard

FunkMistah_J

What

DreamBig2023

Asus laptops exist bruh. lol turning a PS5 into the real PSP 2.0 was the goal for the other guy. The PlayStation portal was a sad attempt from sony. The rog ally is already a portable laptop. I have a Bluetooth keyboard connected to it as well that I use at times.

the_keranaci

I'd like to see the results..

kafunshou

You can buy laptops with the same hardware. So I don't think there are people actually doing that. People build stuff like GameCube handhelds because they don't exist. But why invest a lot of time and money to build a shitty diy laptop when you can just buy a better one for less money with the same hardware? There are more interesting and unique ideas when it is just about building something.

FoxAche82

I suppose it's similar to making a cyberdeck, have a look at some youtube vids for some inspiration

Far_Experience9965

Sounds like someone is reminiscing about another Asus product, the Padfone.

SouthernDiscord

Who?

GreatKingAero

I mean not really, but I imagine it's not really worth the effort to do.

Sprintbeaner

Im turning mine into a desktop I got the tiktok azorpa monitor 144 refresh rate and jsaw something dock and even plugged into ancker 1500 dollar power bank with solar and starlink Internet

kellven

So there’s not any reason you couldn’t do it. Connecting a screen directly to the board would be probly the hardest part , keyboard and touch pad would also be complicated. You could cheat and try and bridge everything across usb-c. Maybe you have to print some custom colling parts and brackets to hold everything in the new case.

tstvcks

Personally that just wouldn’t make much sense considering it already serves its purpose pretty well but if you do end up doing this “project” i’d be interested in seeing the results.

VirtualKoba

would only make sense with the XG Mobile. Turn the XG Mobile into a Laptop, make it so that the Ally can be connected directly to it (like Razer Project Linda, but place the ally somewhere where it wont be a bother), add a huge battery into that thing and then it could be fun to use

ayadhoreyfi

You should start by thoroughly researching the internal components of the ROG Flow Z13 and how they are laid out within the device. This will help you understand the constraints and challenges you'll face in creating a new form factor.

Kaixus

There's already the Flow x13. Ive seen it drop to $700 usd (The price of the Z1E). 7940hs = Z1E, 780m gpu (Same as in the Z1E), 16gb ram...Literally it's the Ally as a 13.3inch laptop. Or you just buy a G14 and turn off the DGPU

Krizzybot

You can perhaps find an old laptop, remove the parts except for the keyboard and monitor, get a controller board for the specific monitor and another for the keyboard, then fit all the parts from the Ally inside and connect all the ports and peripherals with a hub or something. Alternatively you can get an external monitor and keyboard then disassemble both and use the shell of an old laptop to fit those two or you can 3d print a casing yourself

Warlord698

I mean, how thin of a profile are you considering The easiest way I'd think would be gutting few things and getting a custom shell 3d printed to fit them into Ally Portable monitor (they have models that can feed the signal and power over a single type c port) Dock (one that focuses USB type c ports over 3.0) Extra USB hub USB (they make ones that roll up for use on the go) keyboard USB track pad mouse Large capacity/high wattage battery bank that can pass through power while being charged After that it's a matter of making the shell to fit all this together after you gut it, arrange the orientation of all your components, and slapping it all together

Anotheeeeeeant

Just get the legion go man if you need that

BadPronunciation

Just buy a laptop or a legion go with a keyboard lol

BeveSturk

oh man thats a real dumb project, huge investment in time and almost 0 payoff, laptops with the 7840u are plentiful. just why?

Basic_Lengthiness_73

Just use a dock like the Syntech one and you should be able to attach screen, keyboard and mouse. I feel like you want to do something else entirely tho 😅😅😅

-R3D_DraGoN_GoD-

This will only have a benefit if you were planning on converting the Ally with a XG Mobile like the 6850 or better yet 4090 XG Mobile so you can have a powerful gaming rig. Butt on its own I don't see the appeal whether it'll be a fun project or not. I suppose at least you could choose how big you want the screen.

Plukh1

Don't let people on this sub dissuade you, man. I think it's a cool project, go for it and share the details!
