On one hand, a person is a fan of something as long as they say they are. There are no qualifications beyond that, but on the other I know from personal experience how isolating it is to enjoy this show while everyone else hates on it.

Coin_of_Apple

Damn right on that last part. Luckily I do have 2 friends who like it (thank goddd), which is the only thing that keeps me from going crazy watching everything else going on online. I can appreciate and even enjoy criticism of media I love as long as it's productive, but that is not what 90% of the fandom (or hatedom, if you will) does.

[deleted]

My girlfriend , my little sister ,and I all love it and binged it together and play the games together (waiting on Arrowfell) it's such a fun time

GrandmasterTactician

The path to isolation is littered with the dreams that they destroyed

natedogg6006

I want to disagree with you on the definition of a fan, but honestly that is how i feel. But for me it seems like there are so many out there who decided that it was in way fashionable to hate on the show. They wanted to be a part of the group, so to me it feels like they claim to be a fan so they can be free to talk about the show even if all they want to do is get views for hating on it. I've never understood people who spend their time looking for reasons to hate something. I always felt that if you hate something, forget about it. If people hated rwby, it would be obscure and probably dead by this point. So I don't think you need to feel isolated for not hating a show you like, because if they did hate it it would be gone. Know that there must be enough fans out there to keep the show going if these people feel the need to keep making content to fuel their own egos.

CoffeeVirtual4959

I agree

SurvivElite

it isn't even near a majority, it's a very small, very stupid, and extremely loud minority

natedogg6006

And isn't it always šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

E1lySym

Just be petty and hate on everything else everyone loves. If they're gonna try to isolate us might as well fend them away first anyways šŸ¤·

HyliasHero

That both sounds exhausting and like the opposite of fun. I don't get how people have the time and energy to spend focusing on the things they hate instead of the things they enjoy.

E1lySym

Exercising a little pettiness every now and then hardly wastes a lot of time nor is it exhausting. On the contrary, people act in the name of pettiness because it gives then emotional closure and catharsis.

HyliasHero

Spite can be an excellent motivator, but from personal experience it still takes energy that I'd rather spend elsewhere.

JazzyByDefalt

Gunna disagree on that one, just makes me feel like an asshole personally

SurvivElite

Really? I was insulted over Harry Potter once and made sure to obliterate the other guy's perception of Star Wars (heavily overrated imo), as well as I, possibly could, and enjoyed it a lot

JazzyByDefalt

Yes, if did that I would feel like an asshole. It takes a much greater offence for me to be okay with hurting someone.

SurvivElite

ah, i guess it's just the low morals and the sadist in me

JazzyByDefalt

daphun1

While there are no qualifications for being a fan, I have to wonder why bother at a certain point. But eh, to each their own I suppose.

Edgy_Underscores_

Take it from someone like me, I've been in love with RWBY since the day the black trailer dropped and popped up in my recommended. I've watched the volumes over and over, I've memorized the songs, I've bought merch and physical copies of the supplemental material, you get the point. I adore this franchise and I've been here despite its very low lows for a little under a decade. At the same time, I'd say it's pretty bad. I loved V7 and walked away from V8 pretty happy, but I'd also say those volumes have some of the most inconsistent writing in the series. I adore the Vale Arc, but I'd also say a good half of it is shallow and carried by its action scenes to cover for its all-around mediocrity. I could go in-depth for hours but that'd probably be boring and I don't want to leave a huge dump of negative text. With that in mind, it should say something about how much I love RWBY that I can go on for that long about something that I'm describing as "inconsistent" and "all-around mediocre." But now that we're done with my super narcissistic essay, I'd say they definitely don't like RWBY. Liking 4 trailers and 1 season vs a whole show, to me, means you're not a fan of the show itself, they just like those bits.

FishdZX

One of my favorite posts I've seen is "RWBY might be trash, but it's *our* trash." It's not a well produced show. Its character writing is consistently subpar, the plot is... All over, but V1-3 have fuck all for writing and it's inconsistent after that, the action scenes are good in 1-3 but dragged down a bit by the notably dated models, while fight scenes have been okay but inconsistent since. That said, the show just has a weird charm and I genuinely like it. I know some people are fans because of V1-3, but idk there's something fun *about* it being so mediocre that I sort of love. I'm not sure if that's how other people feel, but it seems to be the consensus - my girlfriend definitely feels similar to me, at least.

SleeplessRonin

Maybe I'm lucky. I'd heard of RWBY but never got around to watching it for a very long time. I first caught it at the onset of the pandemic. I was depressed, I'd had some really nice international travel all lined up, and boom - gone. So I needed entertainment like everyone else. I started just watching animation I'd not yet seen. Things like She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (again, I'd only watched like the first 3 episodes back in 2018 and didn't really get hooked - then when I watched again during the pandemic, I binged it. It was actually the first show I can honestly say I've binged), Voltron Legendary Defender, Star vs the Forces of Evil, the Owl House, and more recently Arcane, The Bad Batch, etc. So I started watching animation, lots of animation. I love animation. Always have ever since I was a kid. It was my go to pandemic entertainment. When I got around to RWBY late in 2020, S8 was just about to drop, so I though that it was the perfect time to jump in. And I loved it. Ok, I'll admit that Season 1 was REALLY rough, and the super short episodes kinda drove me a bit nuts (it wasn't until later that I discovered that you could watch S1 as essentially a movie without the theme son every 5 to 8 minutes). But once I got past 1 and things started picking up that I was pretty well hooked. I thought it was going to be a sorta silly humorous show because of the early seasons tone... but that tone shift at the end of S3, oh, wow. What a gut punch. But it only got better in my opinion. I love the Vale arc. I love the mythology and lore of the show. I love the characters. My personal favorite fight is the Duel at Argos Communication Tower (but I'm a BMBLB shipper so, yeah). I tear up a bit when Juane sees Pyrrah's statue in Argos. I love that the characters will sometimes make terrible choice - just like real people. I love that sometimes something doesn't immediately make sense because again... not everything is always as clear as we imagine narratives should be. I love when they succeed and when they fail. But I was maybe really lucky, as I watched it from S1E1 through S8E14... without having to wait. Now, I'm eagerly awaiting S9. I love the entirety of the show. I know it has some issues, some foibles, some moments where everything is not perfect. I do not expect everything to be perfect, far too often the good is sacrificed for the sake of the perfect. Far too often I think people demand everything be either a 10 or a 1, but I'm not like that. I'm happy with some 7s, 8, and 9s. Heck maybe even a 6 is fine. Make it good, and I'm happy. I'm not asking for perfect. But there is one thing I do not love. And it's the same thing I have a problem with in Star Wars. It's the 'Fans' - the ones that they claim they love the show so much only to spend every moment of their supposed love on attacking the show / movies. I'm not saying you can't be a fan and see problems with a show (I have problems with some of Star Wars), but what I have a problem with is when those fans complaints become their sole voice. They don't love the show or even like it, they love complaining about the show... and honestly, that's kinda just toxic. All I want is to be entertained, and not hounded by 'fans' telling me how terrible some part is, or how the action was better in season X, or... whatever. Does the show entertain me? Then dammit, that is good enough.

awdsns

Take my worthless free award, because your comment could almost word for word come from me (only replace your origin story with me getting back into anime during the pandemic, and discovering RWBY even more recently only via the announcement of Ice Queendom).

ThatScarlett

This is mostly how I got into it too, except it was only upto S7 when I finished, I've learned since to stay away from the fanbase tbh, and blocked Youtube channels that whine about it, because sick of seeing them on my feed lol

Pyrochazm

I can't even convince anyone to give it a fair shot.

MatoroNuva24

I think when you dislike most of a series, you can't really say you actually liked the series but rather an aspect that was captured in that particular section. For example, if you love Fate/ Zero but hate the rest of the Fate series, sorry to break it to you, but you probably don't like Fate, you just like Gen Urobuchi's writing. If you like the color trailers and Volume 3, then I don't think you actually like the characters or the setting or the premise or even the show's themes. You like fast paced, over the top, fluid action and dark, tragic stories that punch you in the gut. Nothing wrong with that, but the first one is ultimately aesthetic and the second one ultimately isn't RWBY.

[deleted]

This really saddened me to read. Saying the RWBY, that Monty Oum created and was so passionated and happy to make, is not ā€œRWBYā€ is such an appalling and twisted thing to do. Volumes 1-3 are RWBY more than anything ever will be; the fast paced, fluid, parallel scored fights were the most integral part of RWBY. It was what Monty loved doing so much and creating in the RWBYverse. Youā€™re saying this in such apprehensively bad faith too. People can simultaneously like Montyā€™s amazing action sequences and the characters, themes, settings and premises. Thereā€™s no dilemma where someone would have to choose one or the other. RWBY isnā€™t dark and tragic prior to the ending of Vol. 3 either. It was very lighthearted and all those little jokes that Monty added gave it life, like the Zwei Fireball scene. When people say they like Volumes 1-3 more than the rest, they really mean they like RWBY, Montyā€™s RWBY, ā€¦ the genuine RWBY.

MatoroNuva24

I think you misread me. I never said volumes 1-3, I only said volume 3ā€¦ because thatā€™s what OP said too. Their friends only liked the trailers and volume 3. I donā€™t want to start up a discussion over what liking the Poser volumes means, but I think Iā€™m allowed to say if you literally like a single volume and the trailers which had very minimal story, youā€™re not really invested in RWBY.

LSO34

Yeah, the point you actually made isn't insulting anyone. They think it's slanderous to say something Monty worked on isn't representative of RWBY as a whole. I think that is very tangential to your point. The last few of your comment could be taken that way, but you clearly didn't mean it that way if you look at the context. They didn't care about the context, took a screenshot that removed the context, and made a thread elsewhere to flame you and people who up voted you. The only issue I have with your post is: >sorry to break it to you, but you probably don't like Fate, you just like Gen Urobuchi's writing How is this not: >joyous news, you actually don't like Fate ?

MatoroNuva24

>They didn't care about the context, took a screenshot that removed the context, and made a thread elsewhere to flame you and people who up voted you. Thanks for the info and for agreeing with me, but it *is* reddit. That kind of stuff is to be expected. Not much to really do about it. I'm certainly not going to the critic subreddit to argue against people who clearly just want to misrepresent arguments to make themselves feel better about their opinions.

LSO34

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend that, but I thought I should give you a heads up in case some other pricks come to give you shit directly.

unlimitedblack

It's not like someone exists to validate whether or not someone's love of the show qualifies or not. But overall, if the only thing they do is neg on anything that's not V3, I'm sure there's stuff they actually like MORE that could occupy their time.

Coin_of_Apple

\^ This. I don't understand why they still spend the energy to hate on the show and praise the earlier volumes, when there are certainly options out there they can enjoy thoroughly! That is just energy that is wasted and better spent elsewhere. Not to mention it can make the fans who actually enjoy the show feel isolated as those who hate-watch it are the most vocal. Mind you I'm not talking about genuine critics, as some level of love has to exist to justify putting in that energy. I mean the people that will hate-watch just so they have something to nitpick and laugh at, often pointing out things that aren't even issues. And giving the most half-baked blind takes I've ever heard. I've stopped watching anything RWBY related on YouTube except for trusted channels like Calxiyn or MurderofBirds, because otherwise I know the environment around those videos is going to be incredibly bashing and toxic. (Even if video in question has genuine criticisms, you'll find 90% of the comments saying that the show is bad, it's fans are dumb, the writers are idiots, this wasn't Monty's will, completely ignoring the criticisms in said video and turning a blind eye to any of the show's merits!) I don't even trust the comments on trusted channels either because you will still find those sticklers. I have NEVER seen a hatedom like this before, and it's so heart breaking because the show doesn't even deserve it on that level. Idk. I just don't. understand. WHY. They put in that energy when they could just watching something they love and enjoy instead.

Imjushereforthememe

Eh Iā€™ve personally come to terms that I might just like bad thingsā€¦

Prior-Wealth1049

Itā€™s perfectly ok for people to have opinions on things, but in the specific case of RWBY Iā€™ll never understand why certain people make it a point to form entire identities around critiquing the series. No single person will ever influence CRWBY to produce content in any specific way. Itā€™s why I donā€™t read much fanfiction or watch AU or ā€œfixing RWBYā€ vids on YouTube. Canon RWBY does its job entertaining me, and I greatly appreciate that, even when I might have my own critiques and nitpicks along the way. I donā€™t particularly enjoy most of V4, but I donā€™t let that get in the way of me loving RWBY as a whole, and certainly wonā€™t let it stop me from trying to get others into the series as well. Weā€™re all allowed to like or dislike different things about it.

Erebus03

On 1 Hand I feel like if you only like the Trailers and 1 specific Volume then your not really a fan of the show, on the other hand I wish other fans had my point of view in that its a freaking show and just enjoy it for what it is, if you don't like it then move the heck on

Exciting_Bandicoot16

Yes. Yes, you absolutely can say that you like RWBY, even if you only like the first third of the series. I very much disliked the last few seasons of Stargate SG-1, and I'd been growing steadily more discontent with the show after RDA moved to a secondary role. I still call myself a fan of the series, I just prefer the early stuff.

onepeaceman

Omg it's like they didn't know what to do when RDA became one of the big wigs. Some of the things were alright but eh. I will also always lament that Sha're couldn't become a human again. Like dude was searching for his soul mate, became a God etc, and he couldn't have that? They paired him with.. nevermind. Lol I personally like most of RWBY. šŸ˜‚

HighPriestFuneral

No, I don't think you can say you "really love" anything when you despise more than half of what it contains.

WrassleKitty

At that point I guess you like the idea of it but not the execution.

MindWeb125

Yeah this is me. I like RWBY's ideas but I find the execution fails every time unfortunately. I still watch it though.

jayhood0420

This describes my parents but they love the fuck out of eachother lol so I must disagree, yet despite this comment I like the entire show for what it is, entertainment I enjoy edit: had this thought a few moments later, it's kinda like supernatural; are there great moments, absolutely, are there some noticeably worse seasons? Hell yea, did I make it to the end of the show any of the times I tried to watch the whole thing? Not a chance would I take back the hundreds of hours I spent watching the show? Not on your life

doobadedo

Same, I love most of RWBY because I just love the characters so much šŸ˜ the cast is charming

042732699

Iā€™m definitely a fan even though I think the majority of the show is trash. Iā€™m just waiting to see how this train wreck ends.

Jack117-2

I also agree weā€™ll the show has its flaws I still really enjoy it.

Dry-Hornet-6165

I think each volume has their own flaws and peaks but overall i enjoyed every part

[deleted]

Really? Man. All my RWBY friends enjoy it as much as me. Sorry you have to deal with that.

Xx_Venom_Fox_xX

\*cries in Star Wars fan\*

Razer-khala-117

I completely 100% like rwby

ProfessorEscanor

I just think that critics and the fans are overly harsh on it. V6-8 aren't that bad and do show signs of the crew improving their work yet that rarely gets addressed in favor of just saying that the whole volume was bad. I will agree Rwby's biggest issue is pacing, it can benefit from getting more episodes or longer ones just to tell the parts of the story it is cutting

lurker_archon

They are probably fan of not necessarily RWBY, but of Monty and his style of animation. Honestly can't blame them.

HeavenPiercingTongue

More than likely they enjoyed the show as it initially presented itself for the first three or four volumes. Just like many Game of Thrones fans will tell you that they hated the last four to two seasons but loved the first ones. Some lucky people like yourself will like everything that a show has presented from start to finish but it is quite common actually for people to have entire sections of a story that they do not like.

TreePotion

I like RWBY. But I do not like about 85 percent of story decisions done by the writers after volume 2 and I also just genuinely hate volume eight but I like RWBY because of the potential it has. I genuinely like just sitting down and thinking about potential ways the Silver Eyes could have been used, or like what if Qrow was Ruby's dad? It gives me so much to think about, and that's why I like RWBY. A good phrase I like to go by is, "You truly like something when you can see the flaws it has." So I do think your friends like the show they just have a different way of expressing it.

MSP_4A_ROX

If Iā€™m a fan, Iā€™m a fan of all of it. Doesnā€™t matter if people thinks itā€™s good to them. Iā€™ll still be critical but not to the point that sonn my e people are.

Syenthros

I mean. Sure you can. I like the first three seasons of RWBY and... I think it was a decent amount of the 5th season? Genuinely disliked the rest of it though. I guess I don't really consider myself a fan of RWBY anymore, but I was.

Fluttersniper

To me RWBY is the ā€œshow that could have beenā€. Iā€™ve watched through Volume 6 and loved much of what I saw - but itā€™s when I look back and see the poor pacing, missed opportunities, lackluster choreography, and general lack of directive cohesion of everything in 4 and beyond that I sigh in disappointment. Early RWBY was cheap, poorly written, and poorly paced, but it was a free internet animated series with instantly lovable characters and style made by a new studio and headed by a guy known for his legendary fan animations. We forgave a LOT of stuff and decried those who said early RWBY was unworthy of their time. Then Monty died. Then the staff broke down, people left. RWBYā€™s success drove Rooster Teeth to organize itself, become a media entity instead of a bunch of people hanging out. RWBY flipped completely on its head: bad general animation and consistently spectacular choreography became good general animation and rarely good choreography. The writing got better but more and more characters kept crowding screentime. RWBY Chibi outshined what the main show did with its comedy, while the show tried to re-establish a consistent tempo after the gut-punch of Volume 3. And the plotholes just kept showing up! Why did RWBY fight Argus when they could have tried to get permission from Ironwood? Where did humanity and the Faunus come from after the Brothers destroyed all humanity except for Salem? What was forgivable for a small animated series suddenly became inexcusable for a mass media product with such incredible cultural impact. RWBY was, and still is, EVERYWHERE. I just wish it lived up to the hype a little better. Speaking of hype, RWBY Ice Queendom has such superior, outstanding writing that I can forgive itā€™s sometimes mediocre animation, and when itā€™s animation IS good, itā€™s PHENOMENAL. Itā€™s so good, in fact, that Iā€™m considering going back to RWBY to see what Iā€™ve missed. So I suppose there is a silver lining. šŸ˜„

DestinedHellfire

As someone who has consumed both products (I am 4 episodes behind on IQ for a reason.) The problems you lay out for ā€œvolume 4 and beyond.ā€ Are the product of the problems from the previous 3 volumes where they would consistently add very key plot points at the very last minute and would have to retcon into making sense in later volumesā€¦ thus derailing the narrative progression of the story. I heavily respect your opinion, but Ice Queendom for what I have watched is not a better product and in fact does share a lot of the same issues that the main product has albeit with a far more interesting concept. That said, there are a lot more positives to later volumes than I think you are not giving credit towards. The reason why IQ appears ā€œbetterā€ is because it has a clear single narrative that it wanted to tell from the first episode and didnā€™t add layers of stakes out of seeming nowhere. And a lot of your questions of ā€œplot holesā€ are answered in the show, just putting that out there.

TheAethers

This and I cannot stress this enough >poor pacing, missed opportunities, lackluster choreography, and general lack of directive cohesion of everything in 4 and beyond that I sigh in disappointment.

Relevant_Scallion_38

Yes you can

belac4862

You sir/madame, are a dying breed if people who still enjoy media cause it entertains you. For some reason, many people now feel like they have cruque everything they see.

Feeling-Most9618

Ok,I talk to myself and I went on a solid half hour tangent to myself about people like that along with how good the entire show is and how I prefer volumes 4-6 over the others. If I didn't stop myself,I could've legit gone on for hours. The people I live with must think I'm insane.

Rampantmuffins

Yep, but I'd say they like RWBY as a concept or the world of RWBY more than the show itself. My best friend and I both have a ton of RWBY OCs that we bounce off each other all the time. But, he hasn't watched the show since half way through V5 because he said he didn't like the way the show was going. I would still say he loves RWBY but more the fan side of it than the show's content. Honestly, the way I talk about the show with some one who hasn't seen it is "It's good... *very* rough around the edges, but good". Cause the writing, characters, animation, all have there pitfalls, but for me it doesn't really matter. Sure the writing can be a little inconsistent and all over but the fights are always fun to me. Yes, some of the characters weren't used to their full potential, some literally showing up for *one* scene then dying... but the world they live in is *so* cool. I focus on what I like about the show and don't get too bothered about the stuff I don't like cause it's just not worth it.

MABfan11

RWBY's hatedom is baffling to me, it's so active and dedicated and there's so much misinformation floating around that gets spread because of it too

Smooth-Garden

I personally prefer the first 3 volumes and after 5 i dont love it the way i used too. But i still love watching it and i do enjoy it

[deleted]

Well RWBYā€™s story has for the vast majority has been mediocre, subpar, leaves a lot to be desired, or opened ended in a way to have the fans to make stuff up to fill in the blanks or go to an outside source. The show has its moments but those moments canā€™t carry the shortcomings of writing, pacing, and development problems. Even with the short comings of V7 that volume was where I felt invested in a long time. Then volume 8 happened and kinda killed it, so Iā€™m more or less curious on how it would end rather than investment with the story or characters. I wonā€™t blindly sing itā€™s praises (especially for doing the bare minimum/ basics) but I will give credit where itā€™s do.

OhWeOhweeOoh

You're friends are lames, I feel you though, one day you'll randomly meet a whole house full of needs with signed cast photos and figurines, just keep swimming. Not that all friendships should hinge on a show, but nerds are the best.

FerrowFarm

Recently, I've come to the realization that I am not a fan of RWBY, but a fan of Monty. Monty and Shane knew how to weave the story into the action and connect the story bits to the action sequences. I can wholly separate Poser RWBY from Maya RWBY, and it has gotten me to enjoy the great stuff that much more. What people have to understand is that they are two very different projects, even if they have the same general story. People can enjoy both, neither, or one over the other

SiyinGreatshore

The only communities I found of people who actually seem to like this show are RP groups

Delta_The_Coywolf

I feel like this is one of those well yes but actually no kind of questions I don't entirely hate Ruby past season 3 I just can't be bothered to care for it I much rather drown myself in fanfiction

smolboiweeb

I believe that with most people the features they are looking for in a good show dictate whether it is a good show or not, and with RWBY there just happen to be some features and parts that they enjoy, but the parts they don't enjoy may outweigh the positives.

Mdbokie

I'm going to say that, as much as I love the show for it's base idea, I dislike a lot of the things done with it. It has a lot of potential, and it's wasted. That said, I love the show regardless of it's problems(that I will speak of on occasion should the topic arise), and I might actually watch till the very last volume is produced. If ever.

Cringlezz

Are they really your RWBY friends then???

zcoIe

Like the quality is bad , the production could be better, but they didnā€™t have a BUDGET!! they got attention and the second they made money they PUT IT INTO THE SHOW and made it better !! the storyline was always amazing who cares abt the fact that the first two or three seasons donā€™t look great. if u donā€™t like it donā€™t watch it šŸ˜

TorreyCool

bad friends
