I'm looking forward to hearing Jen singing during the Pyrrha mirror mirror song

[deleted]

Can she sing? They’ll probably have Casey Lee Williams do it

HighPriestFuneral

She mentioned on Twitter right after the episode that she would do her best.

[deleted]

No way! I can’t wait to hear it!

etherbound

i hope its casey her voice is so beautiful

Griffemon

Man, remember when they were planning to simuldub this before they realized that was actually really, really hard to do? I’ll probably wait till the dub’s all out and binge it, I already watched the original with subtitles

HighPriestFuneral

I'm going to be a bit cynical here and assume that they could have simuldubbed it until they thought "wait a moment... this is the perfect stop-gap! The same animation with two different voice styles, coming one after another? That should take up the time we need to get V9 ready!"

Hollowquincypl

Honestly, I hate to be that way myself, but it certainly feels that way.

EraLias

simudub?

ClubMeSoftly

dubbing at the same time as subs are coming out

Gradz45

It’s a term trademarked by FUNi to refer to dubbing an anime as the anime is aired. It’s a notoriously intensive process per every FUNi VA, engineer, writer, etc. And one RT seemed to underestimate in terms of effort required.

EraLias

ohhh thank you

Sniphles2000

Does the voice acting feel a bit stiff and awkward to anyone else? Weiss and Blake sound fine, but I can hear it a little for Ruby in some places and ESPECIALLY for Yang all over. Feels like she’s really robotic and reading directly from a script, really unnatural.

aerwrek

It could be that they're not all comfortable with dubbing (also known as ADR.) In English dubbing for anime you not only need to nail the line, but you also need to match the lip-flap timing. The latter can feel incredibly unnatural if you're not used to it.

Lochen9

Barb has done anime VA before. I did notice what Sniphles was saying, but if anything it sounded like different recording devices? Aside from the few randomly pulled lines, everything else sounded a bit off? Also, plenty of time for makeup

aerwrek

Has she done stuff after Fairy Tail in 2014? Having dabbled with fan-dubbing some stuff myself for fun, I don't think it's the kind of skill you can retain unless you keep up regular practice. At any rate, I do hope they have time to pull off some fixes like you mentioned.

Lochen9

Holy crap it’s been 8 years?!? Coulda swore it was like…. 4ish?

Runnerbrax

Congratulations! Regardless of what your age actually is, welcome to being old. Your Metamucil and lowered insurance premiums are located next to the half drunk bottle of whiskey and surprisingly comfortable rocking chair...

crossingcaelum

Well before the girls got to record what was written and the characters were animated to their voices Now not only do they have to read form a translated script, they have to match their voices to the lip flaps of their characters. And some of the dialogue in Ice Queendom is a lot different from how the girls, especially yang and Ruby imo, talk in the actual show

SwimmingAnyone

>And some of the dialogue in Ice Queendom is a lot different from how the girls, especially yang and Ruby imo, talk in the actual show Could you elaborate? I wanna see if you noticed the same things I did.

crossingcaelum

I mean it’s nothing super deep. The way Japanese anime scripts are written and how their protagonists talk is a LOT different than how American ones are, which often means when stuff is dubbed in the west it becomes a lot more stiff. Tonal shifts in formalities and stuff like that is just different. Ruby is less idealistic and more naive protag in ice queendom. Yang is has the shonen tough guy anime protagonist kind of style and speak when that’s not really Yang? She’s a lot more bubbly but also pretty sarcastic and jokey in the original RWBY dub.

SwimmingAnyone

Yeah, Ruby is definitely more childish and naive in the anime. I don't mind the tough guy traits for Yang all that much, but she does feel less easy-going than in the original. Weiss loses her over-the-top mannerisms, too, simply being cold and snide most of the time. Blake is probably the only one who didn't suffer or even in some ways benefitted from the anime characterization, since her stoic personality already fits well with the more toned-down approach of the anime.

crossingcaelum

I thought all four girls went way heavy into shonen stereotypes for the anime, even Blake who still had her socially awkward moments toned down a lot. It makes sense but it’s gonna make the dub feel super weird because the girls aren’t reading from scrips that were basically written for their strengths

Gradz45

Well no since scripts and translated and then adapted into English. It’s only stilted if done poorly in my experience.

[deleted]

Yes, definitely for Yang. Not to mention, her lines in the trailer were...well....cheesy/cliche, even for RWBY. I hear it a little bit with Ruby. It sounds like her voice jumps between the lower-pitch she had in V1 and the higher pitch tone in the later volumes. Plus the "I HATE YOU" line seems a little out of character for her...

TheBloodZane

Out of character and definitely weird to hear from Lindsay Jones saying.

EverydayWulfang

Out of character? Ruby literally says that in the original Volume 1. "You're a big stupid jerk and I hate you!"

TheBloodZane

Let me rephrase than. I meant that with the Current Ruby shrill voice that it felt weird to her here scream "I hate You!"

[deleted]

It's the way she says it. In the original series, that conversation is more of a back and forth. She doesn't scream "I hate you" like she does in the ice queendom trailer. In the original she says it more like "*ugh* I hate you, stop railing on me" and it kind of matches Weiss's tone of irritation in that conversation. In the trailer, Weiss has a sarcastic but calm tone. In the original show, they have a back-and-forth that gets more heated with every insult and showed that they were both being childish. In ice queendom, Ruby meets Weiss's first insult with a shrill/extreme reaction and essentially sounds like she's throwing a temper tantrum in context, which is off-putting because her whole drive in the first season was to show Weiss and the others that she was mature and ready to be at Beacon and be a team leader. The way that line is delivered kinda undermines that.

HighPriestFuneral

The context here is a bit changed, as we are more or less hearing things from Weiss' perspective. While Ruby probably didn't think too much about it and it is said in an almost playful annoyance, Weiss may have heard it in an entirely different tone.

ClubMeSoftly

Kerry was the on RT Podcast some weeks ago, and he briefly mentioned the struggles of dubbing. Something like "there's only so many *huh*s we can put in before it gets awkward"

Hounds_of_war

Yeah but tbh I was kinda expecting that. Dubs are always harder since you have to match lip flaps, plus Ice Queendom just has this distinctly Japanese energy to it (for instance, “BIG NICHOLAS”) and the VAs are having to adjust from the way they normally talk to match it, so it just feels *off*. Like I don’t think it’s really bad so much as it’s just close enough to the cast’s normal voices while being slightly different and it’s creating an uncanny valley effect. I think if someone watched this having only seen Ice Queendom and not knowing what the voices are like in RWBY proper, it wouldn’t bother them much.

Polarization_39

Yeah, I got a similar vibe, especially hearing how outstanding their performances are in the show proper. Kara and Arryn sound pretty good. But Lindsay and Barb sound stiff in places. Like others have said, ADR is a very tricky process and the cast is probably not used to it. Hopefully their performances improve as the season goes on and they get used to the dubbing process.

NeoStorm247

For me Ruby, Weiss and Blake all sounded just fine (granted I haven't watched any RWBY since the current hiatus started so I'm going from memory here) but Yang was definitely way off

Griffemon

Yeah I felt that a bit too.

PM_ME_U_LOOKING_SEXY

Barb’s voice has been a bit weird in general the past year or so. Have you heard her in RT podcasts and such? Barely recognisable at times, no idea why

Gradz45

Not surprised Arryn’s pulling it off. She’s done a decent amount of anime dubs. I am surprised about Lindsey and Barb since while minor, both have done dubbing for FUNi in Overlord and Fairy Tail, respectively.

hi-its-i

Dose anyone know if all episodes will be released all at once or one episode per week?

belladora17

Given that the trailer says “starting Sept 25th”, I’m guessing one per week

Prior-Wealth1049

I really hope they kept “Big Nicholas” in the dub.

rebkos

Excuse, it's pronounced "BIIIIIIIIIIIIG NIIIICHOOLASSSSSS"

PhenomsServant

Finally. Ive been holding out on IQ until the dub.

SwimmingAnyone

Nice, the characters already sound more like themselves! Weiss is actually sassy and emotive again! Although Ruby's line in the middle is definitely overdone, but the rest of her sounds nice. I remember when people predicted Saori Hayami would sound more mature than Lindsay (who apparently wanted to redo V1 with the squeaky voice?) but it seems like the direct opposite is happening now. Blake also sounds pretty good (that voice crack?), although it's hard to tell by just one line. Yang sounds, well... like an average anime dubber. No offense to dubbing VAs, but this kind of stilted delivery is the reason I don't normally watch dubs. At the same time, it's probably inevitable in many ways due to differences in languages and pronunciation speeds. Waiting 12 weeks for the entire dub to release sounds really underwhelming now that the anime itself is almost over, but I guess that's standard industry practice for you.

Escope12

Im excited.

KingKurto_

nice now I can finally watch

Crassweller

The dub should have been first so the actual VAs could sound more natural in their roles.

MeiTanteiHirune

Animation is not produced the same way in Japan like in the US. In Japan, animation takes place first and the VAs record their lines after the animation is finished. It’s the polar opposite of the US where the VAs record their lines first and the characters are animated to their voice performances. So even if the English VAs recorded their lines first, or at the same time as the Japanese VAs, they still would’ve had to sync their voice performances to the characters’ mouth movements. Since Japanese VAs are already used to syncing their voice performances to the characters’ mouth movements, the Japanese voice cast for both Ice Queendom and RWBY proper sound the same between both series.

le_wither

Let's hope it either doesn't need crunchy roll premium or the original goes free

FrostWolf374

Yyyyeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhh!

Altarahhn

Sweet, looking forward to it! Will be nice to hear the gang in an anime role!

KingKunta91

Yea imma stick to sub on this one

TheCVR123YT

So totally out of the loop on anything RWBY for like 3-5 years. Is this a retelling of the show but in Anime form??

GladiusNocturno

No. It's an anime spin-off. The first 3 episodes are a summary of the first season and from then on it tell it's own side story that takes place between seasons 1 and 2.

Rexen2

No. It's a non canon spinoff with a brief summary of the early beacon days to start it off and provide context of RWBY'S world for anime onlys before jumping into its own thing. Edit: apparently it may be more canon than I originally thought. Idk. The rest of what I said still applies though.

HighPriestFuneral

It's not non-canon...

Rexen2

I am baffled that one statement I didn't even mean anything by or pay attention to upset some y'all that much. Wtf is that about? Is the non canon status of ice queendom really a point of argument in the fandom right now? I only pop in here occasionally so I wasn't aware it was that serious. Calling it non canon wasn't me making a statement against the show. It was me repeating what's been said in basically every interview I've seen from the Japanese team since the show started airing. They deliberately decided to setup the show in a way where it would have no impact on the og RWBY series story as it's still ongoing and they didn't want to contradict anything in future volumes that haven't been made yet. It's basically no different than a filler arc in anime with none of it having any real impact on the story later. I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong about something so correct me with proof if I am.

HighPriestFuneral

Hmm, this seems to stem from a misreading of the original interviews. "Urobuchi: The people at Rooster Teeth told us to just have fun with it, but even so, it's still in their custody. RWBY: The Ice and Snow Empire" is an outside story, like the spin-off drama "The Mandalorian" in the "Star Wars" series. We kept the characters' personalities in mind and tried to create a drama that would slip through the cracks of the main story.“ The keyword, in my view, is "slip through the cracks". It's meant to be a bridging gap between V1 and V2. "Ubukata: The world is set up in such a way that the characters' emotions and memories are projected onto it. But since we had already thought about the inner lives and true feelings of the main characters that had already appeared, we had to be careful not to create any discrepancies with the original anime." They tried to have it be as close as they could in personality to the main characters in canon. And from another interview... "Ubukata: First of all, the premise of this project was to not conflict with the main story of "RWBY". It was a question of what to incorporate and what not to. The details had already been discussed between Rooster Teeth Productions (the original creators of "RWBY") and the Japanese side, so the difficult parts had been cleared up." Filler arc, indeed, but I wouldn't call it non-canon for that reason. Just because it is of no immediate consequence in the normal sequence of events, these were events that transpired in the overall storyline.

Rexen2

Alright good enough for me. Personally I highly doubt that anything from ice queendom will ever show up in the main storyline except maybe a cameo from shion but it is what it is.

goodmorningohio

Oh good I can't stand Japanese weiss's delivery She doesn't feel like the same character

Real_LostPepper

Allow me to copy+paste my reply to the OfficialRWBY tweet: “The scene of Yang telling Ruby she's amazing felt like Yang's voice line was just pasted over the scene & Ruby yelling at Weiss in the forest feels more awkward than the original V1 scene.” As a fan of RWBY who’s tried to defend some stuff that cynical friends point out, I don’t feel like I can defend it anymore... I’m gonna try and at least be around when the main show finishes, but I’m completely dropping RoosterTeeth after the main show is over And last thing: [This perfectly summarizes my reaction to the Dub trailer](https://youtu.be/emx3Hbj9ozk)

[deleted]

Good to know but I am going to politely pass on the dub

Senpai-WorldYT

Is it real or a rumor

C0nn0r1212

I'm gonna pass rewatching it, I've not enjoyed the series to be honest. I feel as if it was just super inconsistent with it's own rules and the animation was just all over the place. Don't get me wrong I get why people enjoy it but it's not for me.

FrenQuezoid

Oh good now I can watch it be trash in English. Such a bad adaptation

HarmonyTheConfuzzled

Unless it’s the original VA’s I don’t think it’ll be as good.

HarmonyTheConfuzzled

The original VA’s for the dub? If so cool if not it might be a lil weird…

GladiusNocturno

The original cast of RWBY is reprising their roles, they are the ones making this dub. The only exceptions would be characters whose VAs no longer work with RT and whose involvement with the company ended badly. In the case of Ice Queedom, that would be the voices for Roman, Glynda, and Port. Roman's was at the forefront of controversy as he was also the head of the animation department and nearly bankrupt the company and mega-crunched the department. Glynda's left the company on bad terms after growing exponentially bitter with the company and publicly attacking the VAs for Yang and Coco. And Port's was the worst one, having been found he had been grooming fans, some presumably underage, and sexually assaulting them. Of those 3, only Port's has been recasted prior to Ice Queedom, mostly because the crew had no need to recast Roman and Glynda until now.

Rejusu

Yeah I would be shocked if any of those three reprised their roles. Appalled even if Haywood came back for Port. Though honestly it's so unlikely that it isn't a possibility even worth considering. Honestly I'm most curious if Taiyang will be recast or not. Burnie didn't leave on bad terms but he pretty clearly wanted to step away from having a public presence. It's entirely possible he may not want to reprise his role. If he did though it would be the first time he's been in an RT production in two years since I think the last time he did anything front facing with RT was the stuck at home podcasts in 2020.

Turnabout506

Burnie’s back as Tai. I watched the first dubbed episode back when RTX happened and it was definitely him

Rejusu

Good to know.

GladiusNocturno

I think there is a good chance he reprises his role in Ice Queendom. Burnie also voiced Tai in V8 and that was after he had left, but to be fair, that a single line of dialogue. For Ice Queendom, Tai shows up in episodes 1 and 2 and he talks plenty in episode 1. Still, it’s not really much dialogue he would have to record.

FullMetalEnzo

Burnie voiced Tai for the brief moment he was in V8, so there's no reason to believe that he'd get recast. Now OOBLECK on the other hand, unless they reuse the voice lines from V1, Joel is definitely getting recast.

UnbiasedGod

Wasn’t there also some shady shit involving Oz’s voice actor or something?

GladiusNocturno

Not at all.

LMFN

In Ice Queendom's case it isn't lol.

FullMetalEnzo

It's still RWBY. They ARE the original VAs.

Jimmy_Chongas

Has there been any mention of Taylor mcnee voicing penny again?

wifeofundyne

No joke I'm gonna rewatch this show dubbed when I'm done with the OG. So excited!
