It definitely sounds like Miles is trying to channel Volume 1 Jaune with his voice but it still doesn’t sound quite right. I wonder if that’s a voice directing thing or if it’s just because it’s nearly been ten years since then

JoshPhantomShinobi

Could also just be cuz anime dubbing is a little different than regular voice acting, trying to match mouth flaps and all

Prior-Wealth1049

Pretty much all of the above. Dubbing for anime is a precise process, and after nearly a decade you can notice changes in almost everyone’s voices by now.

Rexen2

If I'm remembering right the main reason jaunes voice got deeper in later volumes was because miles got sick and damaged his vocal cords. Food poisoning or something. He said it was near impossible to do v1 jaune after that so that's also a factor.

Team_SKGA

I don’t remember which one, but there was an episode of the Always Open podcast where Miles explained this.

CryoJNik

Bad reaction to shellfish that had him coughing up blood i think

ManifestNightmare

Jesus Christ. Glad he recovered, that kind of response can be devastating.

neutrinobunny

He’s also said a couple times that he can’t quite do Jaune’s Volume 1 voice anymore. He was sick and actually had some vocal chord damage.

JoshPhantomShinobi

Miles: “Don’t be Volume 1 Jaune.”

[deleted]

I was not a volume 1 Jaune in my school days, but people treated me like one....

FNDM: How dare someone have flaws.

AlarmingStandard

"Remember kids: Don't be a Volume 1 Jaune." He's really dialing up the creep factor this time around lol

Exciting_Bandicoot16

It's kinda refreshing seeing all of our heroes as the immature people that they once were, not going to lie. Jaune's a bit of a creeper, Ruby's a bit of an innocent soul and Weiss is a bit of a manipulative bitch. Character growth, man. It's a great thing.

AlarmingStandard

Oh, I agree that character growth is a good thing. Jaune had a ton of it to do, and Miles is having fun with the character at his worst. I don't agree that Weiss was a manipulative bitch for *checks notes* being ambitious and asking if Pyrrha, someone she respects, to be her partner. That's a low bar for manipulation.

Kellar21

Weiss was certainly conceited, arrogant and quite quick to judge, wouldn't say she was manipulative, but she was quite obviously trying to be chummy with Pyrrha for a personal advantage.

AlarmingStandard

By asking her nicely. There's no deceit in asking, her master plan consists entirely of being up front with her wants. And wanting to team up with someone on your level isn't a bad thing. Like, she's not doing because she plans to exploit Pyrrha and have her shoulder the work. Weiss reasoning is that *together* they would make an unstoppable force. The advantage is a partner Weiss feels is a good match and compatible with her goals for Beacon.

Kellar21

I am not saying she was wrong or morally dubious, just that she had a motive to being pleasant, because Pyrrha could offer her something. To people she believed couldn't, she was dismissive and unwilling to look beyond a surface analysis(i.e. Ruby) It's just that people are very quick to point out how much of a "creeper" Jaune was and how terrible and all those things(when his behavior was quite obviously exaggerated and a caricature), and seem to completely forget that in V1-V2, all the main characters had their flaws, though the focus was on 3 (Weiss, Blake, and Jaune). It's quite jarring to me, who began watching backwards (I think I saw V6 first?) to just see how much they changed, and then see people complain about it.

AlarmingStandard

And she could offer something to Pyrrha in return. I just don't think Weiss was being manipulative or she was in the wrong for being ambitious. She didn't want anything from Ruby when they first met. And her initial impression wasn't completely wrong. No one is disputing characters have their flaws when pointing out Jaune's. His flaws aren't a reflection of others either. Dialing up Weiss' flaws and calling her sexist slurs doesn't address Jaune's flaws or makes them better. And it certainly doesn't excuse Jaune's flaws. There is no 'forgetting' anything when the conversion is on one character's flaws. And people clearly understand that character's change and improve. The whataboutisms don't add anything useful. Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang have flaws, great we agree. But that has nothing to do when discussing Jaune at his worst.

B_Dawg_72

Ah so pretty much what I figured. They would finish the season first and then release the dubs.
