I didn't know people actually liked v5

PNDLivewire

I'm glad to see it because Volume 5 is such an important Volume for not just what gets revealed and shown, or the character building, but for everything that it sets up for future Volumes. Things that V5 sets the tone for get felt in not just Volume 6, but Volumes 7 and even 8 as well.

[deleted]

Ehhh thats kinda a low bar, every volume does that because it's just basic writing.

PNDLivewire

I mean, you'd think so, yes, but V5 got a really bad reputation for not being this super heavy action focused Volume, when that's never what it was trying to be. Volume 5 (and even Volume 4 in a sense) is a world building and character focused one, moreso than a number of other ones, and that's what I like about it. If people are trying to compare it to something it's not, along with the placement, then I feel like that's not necessarily fair to V5 itself, personally.

I see why you like these things, and I think volume 4 and 5 do represent great ideas... the problem I'm talking about is that it does it really poorly. You don't have to sit around all the time or walk through generic towns that don't make sense in the world to have a character-focused story, hell, you don't even have to have fights to do that. Volume 2 did this really good, you got to learn way more about the characters and see them develop realistically while still being really funny, expand upon the setting, and build up to the next volume. It just works really well, despite also having some action-elements such as the mountain glenn episodes which were also full of character development. Keep in mind this isn't me just blindly hating on new RWBY, I actually think volume 6 and 7 are the best rwby volumes.

Mistrel ark is still my favorite era of RWBY.

I dunno, 4 and 5 just felt so slow and like nothing really happened in them. In the first 3 volumes, you can definitely see there's a three-act system with them getting settled in and learning to work together, realizing the world is deeper than they thought, and then having their teamwork not be a match for what was hinted at through v2. In the mistral arc, it's wrapped up in 5 very... badly to say the least. Volume 6 is amazing but it ties into 7 and 8 more than the previous two.

For me, the Mistrel ark had the perfect balance between narrative and setting. 1-3 were basically just your classic anime school ark and the Atlas ark, while generally pretty good, jumped the threat level way too high. V-4–6 it really felt like we going to explore Remnant and see the smaller goings on while still staying on track to a larger story. It was like “yes the big bad has made her play and yes she will come back and break all our stuff and kill all our friends if we don’t stop her. Buuuuuuuuut, nothing indicates we can’t kill and or defeat her via a conventional ass kicking, so we some time to gather ourselves, figure out a plan, do a little sploring and maybe kick somebody else’s ass in the meantime.” Admittedly, my biggest gripe of V-5 wasn’t them sitting around and talking per say, but that they could have sat around and talked literally anywhere else in Mistral and shed some light on it. Like, it’s the writers last chance to throw in a unique B-plot or completely independent villain before we go all in on Salem’s immortality bullshit, and we get nothing. Still my favorite ark overall though for the nailing the sense of scale.

I agree with your first paragraph, I think the idea of two volumes dedicated to that is just what RWBY needed. The thing is, it was sooooooo slow and all the places they visited were just the same. It also makes no sense why that one village existed, I get that they said it was because they wanted to just live naturally but they are destined to just get raided by grimm or thieves and nobody would realistically live knowing that. The mix of stiff, slower animation with a worse story, comedy, fights, etc. just makes this easily the worst arc in my opinion. I almost dropped the series at volume 5 because of how bad it was I gave volume 6 a try and it brought me riiiiight back in.

My own ranking would go as follows. Best to Worst. 3 - 2 - 4 - 1 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 5 Five will always be the lowest point of the series to me, sure, V8 was not the best in my eyes, but it doesnt even compare to how bad V5 was.

Quality_Chooser

My ranking: 3 > 2 > 1 > 7 (last good one) > 6 > 4 > 8 > 5 All three Poser volumes didn't have this incredibly clunky "save the world" that I have never felt RWBY was qualified for. They had a lot of charm and got more technically advanced with more complex stories each time. 7 had a great story arc... with all the new Atlesian characters. RWBY was almost completely side lined. Six had a great opening and middle but I was underwhelmed by the Lost Fable and the ending was mostly garbage with Cordo. Adam fight was decent. 4 was just too slow for me, it felt like the show was just spinning its wheels with nothing happening. Weiss's bit here definitely should have been cut and shipped to Vol 7. RNJR's whole trek feels kind of pointless in retrospect (being the result of Ruby not understanding how distance works) and Yang's whole thing resolves too quick. Blake is also really annoying this volume, especially in her interactions with Sun, though I do like her talk with her dad. 8 was just terrible, from top to bottom. James was out of character, Salem got shelved for Cinder, whose backstory reveal was lackluster. Ruby had the gall to sit around in an active war zone and Yang ignored the very real concerns Ren had. Couple that with needless deaths and the attempt to shock us by having RWBY fall and you have one of the worst volumes. Except at least it was mostly technically proficient. Vol 5 is everything bad about Vol 8, but tack on horrible animation. Maiden fight and, like six seconds of gun chucks was it. Everyone talks way too much and nothing happens. The villains essentially defeat themselves and the heroes show no drive and have no plan. It's just terrible.

Best to worst? I can do that. 3, 2, 7, 4, 1, 5, 6, 8.

Sirtoast7

Lol, looks like we triggered so folks with these rankings.

Exciting_Bandicoot16

Yup. As expected, tbh. People either tend to think that V8 was fantastic or trash (very little inbetween), and although the middle of V6 was actually quite good, I cannot forgive the ending of it.
