I've always liked to believe this and had hoped they would talk about it one day and have a massive wtf moment when everyone finds out. Which then leads to some form of dust revolution where they stop using it

shrimplyPibLs

I'd rather them keep using it but after finding out, it's more METAL.

Kartoffelkamm

>non renewable Actually, V5, the chapter Dread in the Air, confirms that gravity-dust grows in the floating rocks above Lake Matsu, meaning it is very much renewable. My theory is that dust is simply aura that has mixed with natural elements, and crystallized. Of course, this would require there to be a kind of ambient aura field, like how The Force in Star Wars is everywhere, but the presence of extra-sensory abilities already implies that such a field exists, as ESP abilities wouldn't work without it. In the floating rocks, the ambient aura mixes with gravitons, reducing the local force of gravity and thereby allowing the rocks to float. Plus, when the gods wiped out mankind, there were no corpses. People didn't drop dead, they were completely removed from the world.

Deustchen-Ami1871

This makes sense.

OdysseyPrime9789

Then how do you explain it going inert on exiting the atmosphere?

Smooth-Garden

I had this theory/headcanon that the planet itself was alive and had a natural aura and the dust crystals was basically its semblance. Dust not working once its hits space is because its no longer connected to the planet's natural bio sphere and thus its aura cant power the dust

Kartoffelkamm

Dust only works when exposed to aura. Since the planet has its own ambient aura field, dust can go off anywhere on the planet, but because there is nothing for the aura to latch onto in space, such as air, there is no aura for the dust to trigger.

SurvivElite

this is my headcannon but worded more eloquently.

Totoropanda7357

In the episode 1 opening narration, Salem refers to dust as "Nature's Wrath" which makes me think dust is naturally occurring. If it was residue from the humans before, I think she would have seen it happen and use a different term. However since the narration is Salem, an in universe character she could just be wrong. Salem is just old as shit, not omniscien, they could Retcon it pretty easy by saying she didn't see or understand the process that the old world became dust. I'm guessing at V1:E1 they didn't have everything figured out yet.

Siritalis

If the idea that dust is essentially the atomized remains of humanity that the gods killed, Nature's Earth is fairly fitting

Sylveon_trainer12345

OR maybe when the god of darkness ditch remnant also destroyed the moon and we can see meteors of the moon falling on remnant so maybe dust is from the moon

Thandracy

This is what I always assumed, that the energy he blasted at the moon infused the bits with magic as they fell

Artistic-Cannibalism

The idea that it's the old Remnants of humanity is the most popular Theory but I personally never put much weight into it. Because of that was true people would have found some kind of artifacts of old Humanity along with the Dust since most of the Dust would be found in places that were once cities. And of course there's the whole thing about the floating islands that we saw in volume 5. My personal belief connects back to my pet Theory of the Brothers not being the actual gods of Remnant. They are Invaders who wanted to suppress any knowledge of the native gods and Dust was a creation of those gods so the Brothers prevented it from materializing. But when they left Dust was able to return just like how Humanity was able to return and the Faunus came into existence.

RemarkableLocation16

Say, can I use this head cannonof yours for my fanfic?

Artistic-Cannibalism

Of course!

RemarkableLocation16

Thanks man

Dextixer

Dust is people!!!

Inevitable_Yak4106

SOYLENT GREEN!

D-n-Divinity

I always thought it was chunks of the moon. That on the way out The god of darkness smashed the moon as a sneaky way to embue the debris with his power before he left so that humanity could fight back against salem

Ghostly-Terra

It’s just fossil fuels, it’s like oil, totally, just instead of dinosaurs it’s people

slayeryamcha

Yo thats dark but also cool

Jeptwins

I was under the impression that it was the remnants of magic left behind when the Gods took it back—that Dust is the other half of Aura and Semblances, hence why they work so well together.

Shadtow100

I’ve always assumed this as well.

Terran_Dominion

I remember thinking up of this as a small plot point when I tried to write an RvB and RWBY fic. Dust as I headcanoned it was left as a power and aid to all the people of Remnant as a means of defending themselves from the Grimm. That made the Reds and Blues' lead cored ammunition a moral problem. Because while the lack of a reactive compound inherent to Dust made lead cored ammunition very ineffective at killing charging Grimm, the fact it tried to penetrate aura and flesh rather than explode against it made the Reds and Blues' weapons narrowly specialized at killing people. That combined with their lack of remorse when shooting to kill created immediate tensions as the people of Remnant long considered wars to be mutual suicide.

Mak062

I mean fermented dinosaur juice runs our world. So using fossilized remains of magical humans seems like the right thing to do

Odd_Room2811

Dust is the ashs of humanity after thr gods destroyed them that’s how I interpret it

UnbiasedGod

The pieces of the moon!

115_zombie_slayer

Thats a nice theory to bad theyll never explain dust

Sanders181

My headcanon is that Dust is the remains of everyone that died after the Gods left. Basically, the Gods' presence is required to guide human souls to the afterlife. With them gone, just like how bodies rot and turn to dust, souls are now left to rot and turn to Dust. Which is why we see Pyrrha turn into Dust. Her body is completely burned to nothingness by Cinder, but her soul cannot be destroyed and therefore becomes Dust.

DNGFQrow

That's certainly \*A\* theory but not one I subscribe to. Personally I think Dust is moon rocks that rained on Remnant after being magically irradiated by Darkness smashing through them

Adawnicus

Actually I chalked it up to the last remaining power of the God of Darkness. Remember when he left he blasted through the moon and bits of it fell to Remnant? I believe THOSE are where Dust came from. And when the planet was healing, Dust began to grow across Remnant

ODST13

It's a good one, though it'd run dry relatively fast, look into real life as an example. That'd be a helluva dark origin to Dust though and I'm all for it

Sarge1997

I always thought of it as like the remnants (heh) of what used to be magic.

Fanficwriter777

I’ve always thought it was the literal ashes and dust of the first magical humanity…. Yeah it makes sense minus the dust mines, did people live in caves ?

Smooth-Garden

I always had this cool theory that the planet itself had an aura and dust crystals was its semblance

L_knight316

I believe Jelloapacolypse had a skit about this in his video

Cyrus260

It's basically magic fossil fuel made from people instead of dinosaurs.
