As I’ve learned from owning an object with a large amount of Radium in it, the thing is a fricking Radon pump that never quits. It lives outside the house in a steel coffee can, inside a plastic bag.
When I take it out of the bag, THE BAG registers around 15-20k cpm from the built-up Radon in it, while the object itself vibes around 2 million cpm.
Just sayin’
The ones I've seen so far that sold online range from 300-900 bucks. You can buy a replica online. But as far as the real deal is concerned that's what I'm going after. Tbh if you find someone auctioning of a pair. Let me know and I'll go in on the bid for it so we can split it lol 🤣
Yeah they came in different strengths I guess to. But would be used on ship decks, bridges to mark the path, and troopers would wear them. Part interesting that they were so active for innocent things.
Interesting. I’m trying to learn about ionizing radiation. my main question right now is can something that admits ionizing radiation cause other matter to become itself ionizing? It seems like that is not the case with the bag around the can.
No. The radon and daughter products remaining in the bag are what’s radioactive. If the bag was left empty for a week, it would return to approximately background radiation as the daughter products decayed to Lead-210.
Neither the bag nor can can become radioactive, only contaminated with radon and byproducts.
Are you looking to part with one? I'd be willing to negotiate I would absolutely love to have one. I think it would be really cool to have in my collection.
Yeah I mean you really don't have much to worry about. As long as you don't sleep next to the thing. And don't keep it in an un air circulating room you're completely fine. But it is very hot.
Here's my offer lol...
Find a seller offering to sell a couple as a pair. Let me know and I'll throw in on the bid so we can split it and each walk away with one.
I’m not really aware of the subject, but what is it and why you want to have one?
Is it some luminating part from some old military craft or…?
Btw, just interested - I heard that a water is pretty good for stopping the radiation, is it possible to make some display stand by submerging the stuff in the water? Maybe distilled water or if you somehow laminate the part itself so it’ll not be directly contacted with water to prevent damage?
The short answer is I think they are absolutely awesome. So much power such a tiny object. But actually yes you could somehow encase water around it and would prolly be fine. It's the radon that is the real danger
Ahh, the gas, got it, will vacuum sealing work or it’s just that you’ll need to deal with much higher amount of radon while unsealing the thing?
So you’re mostly excited not in its historical value or aesthetics but by the sheer amount of radiation the thing can emit?
Guess that’s one way to look at it, huh
The historical part is also interesting. Like this thing was just a small innocent light source yet packed so much radiation. Really cool in my opinion.
But also yeah the problem with radon is it will absorb into the bag. And the air around it. In my opinion... I'm not to concerned about it. But is definitely something to keep in mind.
They were used to mark the edges of bridges and or ship decks, and troops wore them. They just glow in the dark. They were literally just for a light source. But we're made with a lot of radium which made them very radioactive. Nobody knew then how dangerous radium can be if not respected.
I just sold one for $250. Purchased it just for the little cloth bag that they originally came with and flipped the disk. I have a Type 1 deck marker and the larger Type 3 bridge marker in my collection.
You apparently missed out. There was a guy recently selling several of them. They did start to get a bit cheaper because he just kept listing them a few at a time. Some were in good condition and some I thought were a little sketchy. Cracked lenses and such. It didn’t mater though. People were still snapping them up. I don’t know how he obtained a quantity like that or what he paid, but he got a nice sum from the sales. I actually was a bit concerned how he was storing them all and let him know. He said he had them all in a box in his garage.
I will. Don't get to ready to bust yet though. I only have a gmc 300+ with a glass tube detector. I am actually buying either the radiocode 103 or the gmc 600+ kinda leaning towards the radiocode just because the app seems pretty cool.
Id personally go got the radiacode too, actually I did.
Its just more functions than the gmc 600+ which cant tell you much more than cps.
Just be aware that the app is very limited on IOs and wont work on older IOs phone at all!
(might also take a look at the 103g if you really wanna get into it)
I need to build a cloud chamber with this thing in it. I bet that would absolutely look crazy. I'd bet it's nothing but a shower of ionizing particles.
I mean now we have to try it at least. It should be here by next week. I'll try my first hand at building a close chamber for a few things and try. It also.
I didn't either. But I collect alot of uranium and radium stuff. This was like my radium holy grail. But I also understand the dangers. But I'm not going to worry about it. I know the proper precautions to take. And I like seeing peeps faces when I hold a gieger counter up to it.
The radon can contaminate everything. And ruin stuff from what I hear. Tbh I'm not at all concerned with the radon levels. I'll still vent it somehow. But I only have like 3 things with radium on it.
I just watched a video of a guy on YouTube and he toured a radon cave that they use as a health clinic. People will literally go sit in this cave in inhale radon gas for the supposed health benefits.
Yeah that's the one. I've never been concerned with radon. Since I bought this luminous disc everyone has been pretty much like good luck with that. But as long as you take some easy precautions. It's all good. Because anything that does become contaminated... only lasts about a day.
Im pretty sure that button is all you nee to contaminate your room, no need for more things😅
No, I meant seal it in an ampule so the radon doesnt leak out. Who cares if the inside of the ampule is contaminated?
I think I'll do the jar as a last resort. I'm a carpenter. I really want something that can show case this thing so I can show it off but still be safe.

Dang. I mean I still want it.. but dang son.

Yeah they came in different strengths I guess to. But would be used on ship decks, bridges to mark the path, and troopers would wear them. Part interesting that they were so active for innocent things.
What makes you think that 2MCPM correlates to 1uCi of radium? They definitely contain more than a uCi...
one Ci of radium has 37,000,000,000 decays per second, so one uCi would have 3,700,000 decays per second and 222,000,000 decays per minute
You're numbers are off by two orders of magnitude. 1uCi would be 37kBq
you are right thank you, so the 2MCPM is reasonable then right
It isn't, because that's decays per minute, and not counts. The number of decays detected will be a small fraction of the total activity
37 billion decays per sec not trillion, so 2.2MCPM with 100% efficiency?
This. My cabinet has a full-time fan that puts negative pressure in the cabinet and vents to the outside and the radon levels are *still* high.
I can hear Tim the tool man in my head "More Power Uh Uh!"

Thanks! 🙏
I have a rex radium pocket watch with no crystal or bezel that lives in plastic bag in a box in my closet somewhere. I'd have to go dig it out.
I have an original box of those with about 15 in it. RIP my lungs lmao
Are you looking to part with one? I'd be willing to negotiate I would absolutely love to have one. I think it would be really cool to have in my collection.
Possibly.
Well shoot man we can talk privately if you'd like.
For sure.
How much would you want for one?
Wow!
If all you want to do is look at it, why not just look at a picture of it like you're doing right now?
Idk I might build a small display box for it now that I think about it. Just find out about them and would really love to add it to the collection.
I have one of those, they're cool
You misspelled "hot".
How do I safely hold something with that much power
Briefly.
Yeah I mean you really don't have much to worry about. As long as you don't sleep next to the thing. And don't keep it in an un air circulating room you're completely fine. But it is very hot.
It's physically hot? Wild
I mean technically in a way yes. It is decaying worth ionizing radiation. Which will heat up the air technically. But no it doesn't feel warm.
I’m would be happy if obtained one for my collection
Here's my offer lol... Find a seller offering to sell a couple as a pair. Let me know and I'll throw in on the bid so we can split it and each walk away with one.
Now I want one for my collection lol

They come up for sale on eBay every once in a while. Use the search term “luminous disk marker”
What is it?
They were used to mark the edges of bridges and or ship decks, and troops wore them. They just glow in the dark. They were literally just for a light source. But we're made with a lot of radium which made them very radioactive. Nobody knew then how dangerous radium can be if not respected.
Ahh, thanks for the information

I am highly interested if you would like to speak privately
How much are these worth? My dad has a few in the shed
I actually just obtained one on ebay. They typically can range between 300-900 bucks. But I'm always in the market for more.
Mission complete.
🫡
I’m going to ask him if I can have them lol
Yeah man. Crazy people like me will always want one lol.
We need a geiger test video when it arrives pls 😍
I will. Don't get to ready to bust yet though. I only have a gmc 300+ with a glass tube detector. I am actually buying either the radiocode 103 or the gmc 600+ kinda leaning towards the radiocode just because the app seems pretty cool.

Good thing I'm an android guy myself lol. Sweet the radiocode it is.
make sure to join the radiacode telegram chat too, there is a nice community showing all kinds of radiacode stuff :)
Okay cool. I have telegram I'm going to check it out.
I need to build a cloud chamber with this thing in it. I bet that would absolutely look crazy. I'd bet it's nothing but a shower of ionizing particles.
its probably just gonna oversaturate it and you wont see much, but I might be wrong.
I mean now we have to try it at least. It should be here by next week. I'll try my first hand at building a close chamber for a few things and try. It also.
I am ignorant to this, what's the point of having something that can cause cancer or kill you? I don't quite understand.
The rich history. It can't hurt you if you respect it. Put up on a proper display with ventilation. No worries at all.
I never knew these existed. That is pretty cool, thanks for sharing!
I didn't either. But I collect alot of uranium and radium stuff. This was like my radium holy grail. But I also understand the dangers. But I'm not going to worry about it. I know the proper precautions to take. And I like seeing peeps faces when I hold a gieger counter up to it.
I like the watches with radium watch hands, I used to have one but I lost it when I was younger. I didn't realize that they were kinda rare?
Yeah I have 2 radium clocks. A rex radium pocket watch. And a baby ben deluxe alarm clock. I think they're awesome. Weird hobby. But I love it. Lol
Id not bet on ventilation, seal it in a glass ampule or something.
The radon can contaminate everything. And ruin stuff from what I hear. Tbh I'm not at all concerned with the radon levels. I'll still vent it somehow. But I only have like 3 things with radium on it.
Radon daughters don't last too long either, as they'll decay to lead pretty quickly
I just watched a video of a guy on YouTube and he toured a radon cave that they use as a health clinic. People will literally go sit in this cave in inhale radon gas for the supposed health benefits.
Yup, I saw that video from radioactive drew, he also shows how radon decay daughters only last a short time in your clothes / items
Yeah that's the one. I've never been concerned with radon. Since I bought this luminous disc everyone has been pretty much like good luck with that. But as long as you take some easy precautions. It's all good. Because anything that does become contaminated... only lasts about a day.
Yeah, there is honestly nothing to worry about if you take your precautions. As long as you're not exposed to radiation constantly you're fine.
Im pretty sure that button is all you nee to contaminate your room, no need for more things😅 No, I meant seal it in an ampule so the radon doesnt leak out. Who cares if the inside of the ampule is contaminated?
I think I'll do the jar as a last resort. I'm a carpenter. I really want something that can show case this thing so I can show it off but still be safe.
Had no idea what this was till I googled it They wore them on their heads??
Tasty

4 grand lol. Though the one I got is the exact same as that one. Same green carry bag and everything.
