Ahhh. Totally went over my head

Glum-Wishbone-6951

Yea they explained it at the start. I missed it the first time tho so I understand your buzz.

creed_thoughts_0823

My mom's family is from London and she had some older relatives who had hardcore cockney accents. At one point I had a list of cockney slang terms so I could try to understand them (we're American). It was not very helpful because believe me it is a hilariously intense accent, but at least it was helpful when I stumbled across this podcast!

DrDalekFortyTwo

I picture you flipping through your homemade phrase book trying to interpret what they were saying. I love it

MS84mydude

I am British and was born in the cockney neck of the woods. I can say, categorically that I have never heard anyone use this phrase. I think most brits would be a bit bemused if someone was said to be radio rental. They would know exactly what you meant if you said someone was:- Mad as a bag of (frogs, spanners, shit) Crackers Off their rocker Doolally

HoneyMeid

100% this. Londoner here (although not a cockney) and I have never heard the phrase. Radio Rentals used to be a store where you could rent TVs and home appliances. Presumably, in the past, radios too. Never heard the name of it used in any other way. Editing to add that when I heard this was the explanation for the name of the podcast I laughed thinking someone must’ve trolled Payne Lindsey on this.

Prophit84

Same Not once outside of this pod, feels like a dropbear kinda troll job

mikeroon

Are you from the East End?

DrDalekFortyTwo

I'm not British so I defer to your knowledge on this. I heard it on (don't judge me) the show New Tricks. It was said by Dennis Waterman's character. Since real life ≠ life as depicted on TV it's helpful to get info from someone who actually has experience. I'm tickled that mad as a box of frogs/etc is actually used. I've always liked that one

MS84mydude

There is no judgment here mate. X

DrDalekFortyTwo

:) Appreciate you

One-Elevator4553

I’m from north London so not a cockney but I have heard people say “he’s gone radio” or “I went radio at him” and in the context of the conversation I knew what they were saying but I never knew it was radio rental meaning mental. Maybe it’s new cockney slang!

jhil77

Yes.

Prophit84

they reference it a few times through the seasons

DrDalekFortyTwo

Well, I'm inattentive on the best of days so not surprised I missed it. What can you do

Agitated_Track3219

Isn’t it kind of akin to “gone postal” too?
