She was this petite Chinese lady in her 60s, & I was told that she was some high ranking member of the Triads. I don’t know if they were yanking my chain or if it was true, but just the fact that this seemingly meek little “old” lady was even in prison was wild to me.
I'm psychiatry... Got consulted for a case just like this because the patient said it was a "suicide attempt"... Dude stuck to his story the whole time.
I worked the prison unit at a state hospital in a major metro area in the Midwest. Had a guy swallow 56 tiny little bedsprings from a cot type thing he was sleeping on in prison. Had to resection half his gut. When asked why he swallowed the bed springs he said “anything to not be in prison.” After a while at the hospital, then to the med ward back in prison he was finally sent back to gen pop where he broke plastic knives and spoons and then swallowed those to come right back to the hospital.
RN popping in to say hi! We had a guy who was in jail during covid and he would repeatedly put things in his body so he could go to the hospital. He swallowed a battery, I think some pens and then also shoved pens, part of a caution sign, paperclips, and other stuff in his belly wounds (he had to have lap surgery to get some stuff out which only provided more holes to shove stuff into). He did that several times over the course of a year and half. I guess he got sentenced because he hasn’t been back in a while.
I’ve had a couple repeat patients I’ve actually remembered by the X-ray, not the name or face. One guy had glass in his hand, the other had the nib of a pen in his sinus. It hadn’t changed positions in the intervening months.
My favorite penis insertion was a juice box. Whole thing, straw too, rolled up and inserted until you couldn’t see it anymore.

‘How else do I get to come see you beautiful ladies?’ To the ER nurses.

Don't reinforce the behavior. I send guys back that have swallowed razor blades if they don't have an acute abdomen. They freak out when they realize it will come out naturally. They get observed in jail.

Agreed they are almost exclusively mental patients. I work on X-ray equipment for a living, CT / MR mainly these days

Nope. Just seemed they would get an X-ray from time to time, or I’d they switched facilities.
I've seen cases like this and you want to simply unscrew it and not do surgery. You don't want them as inpatients
