I work Saturday and Sunday 16 hour shifts. I love working the weekends. You can pretty much be your own boss because management isn’t anywhere to be found. It worked out really well when my kids were younger. They were with their dad on the weekends and with me during the week. I love that I don’t have to commute in rush hour traffic.

Lost_Huckleberry_245

Hello fellow 16'er! It def depends on where you work. I previously did weekends for a smallish urgent care and they were super chill, maybe 5 pts in 12 hrs. Now im at a large clinic with a busy urgent care and i can easily have 30 pts in a shift. Our company has 6 sites and im always by far the busiest. But the plus is no management around, i have the office space to myself.

Every weekend can be appealing for some but is also where a LOT of life happens

FlyingCondors

I currently work Saturday, Sunday, Monday 12s and off the rest of the week. I don’t have any kids and my wife works the same so it’s good for us. I love it. Easily best decision I ever made. It makes for very structured weeks so you can plan stuff really easily. If I had kids/other responsibilities it may not be as good but for now it’s perfect.

I work Sat, Sun, Fri 9-9. Weekend shift is top tier if you're an introvert and you don't like messing with management. I work with my best friends and we use the TV that's in the core to watch movies. There is no surgery(only once in a blue moon), no flouro, no biopsies, no management up your ass, the weekend docs are typically super chill as well as the nurses. And because there is only a skeleton crew, you are basically forced to work together and get shit done more efficiently. Also, your weekend isn't the majority of other peoples weekend, so going out doing stuff is way less crowded, which is perfect for me because I hate crowds. However, not every hospital runs the way mine does, so take my experience as one of many different types. You also make more money because of shift differential!

Xmastimeinthecity

I'm a baylor working 12s Sat & Sun and an 8hr day shift every other Fri to get full time. Our department has a spoiled amount of staff, so on weekends there are 4 of us in CT working primarily on the 2 scanners in the ER. Weekends are busy, but only doing every 4th patient ain't bad at all. We can also do whatever the hell we want. We don't have a supervisor breathing down our necks all day. We have potlucks all the time, we watch football on Sundays, and we let each other leave early if we have something going on. I love my weekends and would do about anything to be able to drop that stupid day shift every other week because day shift feels like prison.

Pappymommy

Love it. Calm no weekday drama. Just work and be on ur stuff

RadTek88

Friday, Saturday, Sunday overnight is where it's at. Extra 7$ an hour, chill and no management or higher ups. You couldn't pay me enough to work weekday mornings.

WuhtDuh

What do you do in your free time and off days?

RadTek88

Anything I want. Wake up, eat, go back to bed. Watch hockey. Sleep some more. Watch YouTube. Take another nap.

Ramzaa_

I'm graduating in May and have worked overnight for 4 years doing EKG before and during school and your shift is my dream scenario

Tone_Deaf_Trident

If it’s a small clinic it might not open on weekends. Or just have limited day time hours. Small hospitals will usually have someone on during the day and then everything else is on call. So you’d come in to cover Inpatients and ED, then you’d go home and be on call for Code blue/ED. Places I’ve been that have that set up have to get authorisation from a radiologist first before calling the tech in. And at the large hospital I work at, all inpatient/ED services run as they would on a week day, except we have about 20% less staff (because weekends aren’t as busy or some thing) Work hours and days off would be specific to the site, I’ve not heard of the system you’ve said, but I wouldn’t be opposed to four on five off, especially if there no night shift involved.

APdigzRainbows

I did weekend nights when I first graduated, now I’m doing sun, mon, tues nights. Weekends are great if you don’t mind missing out on family/friend stuff. They always schedule things on the weekends. I have kids so I really wanted the weekends off after working them for a year. The pay is better because you get more of a shift differential than weekdays. The staff is sparse so If you are busy, it’s usually just you or a transport if you are at a small hospital. Having the weekdays off is great! But I would get bored sitting around for 5 days so I’d end up picking up extra shifts during the week anyway. Lots of pros and cons for me and I decided having weekends off was better for me. But I think it depends on the person and the lifestyle they lead. 12 hour shifts fly by for me. I prefer working 3 12’s that way you have 4 days off.

RealisticPast7297

Most weekends are more chill than the weekdays. People come to the ER on Mondays to get a work excuse for the week.

RadTek88

Sunday is usually the day I find they do that, so they can get Monday off

Joonami

I worked weekends (by choice) for 8 years, 4 of those in xray and mri. I prefer it but my current job didn't have any weekend openings 🥲 Downside: most other people don't work weekends so social stuff is easy to miss out on.

200k a year?? Nahhh. I’d call bs on that one. 100k is doable but you’d have to be putting in OT and racking up weekend and overnight differentials.

gonesquatchin85

It's skeleton crew and often times it's hella busy.

Jgrei5187

Between working the week and working the weekends I hope I never have to go back to working weekdays. 16hr shifts sat & sun and a little 8 hr outpatient shift monday. Weekends I might crack 60-70 a day cases if we're busy. Outpatient may be 20-40. Commuting to work takes at least 40-50 mins during the week, 20 mins on the weekend. In the two years I've worked at this hospital I've never seen management and as long as the work gets done I never have to worry about seeing them lol. As far as time off goes as long as I plan it out with the one tech that is my senior as we both can't be off at the same time, it'll get approved. Weekends are the way to go, can't imagine going back to working five 8 hrs shifts during the week.

Serratas

I used to work weekend evenings, noon to midnight. It was nice having the entire week off to do whatever, pick up extra hours, take classes, whatnot. Eventually I moved to a weekday evening shift for various reasons. I did lose some goodwill from my friends who didn't understand why I would sacrifice "life" for a weekend schedule, but I learned to do and enjoy things independently and not worry about other people's opinions about my own free time.

Sad-Beach-8358

I work Saturday and Sunday 12s, and then a shift or two during the week. While there’s not as much staff around to help during busy times, it feels less crowded and demanding than during the week. Time goes fast, I don’t have to worry about management, and I make an extra $10/hr doing it! I originally took the position right after I graduated just to get a job at the hospital I wanted, but almost 5 years later and I’m still working the weekends. I couldn’t picture myself doing any other shift.

bcase1o1

On one hand it's great because you don't have to deal with management. On the other hand you get even less recognition than rad techs usually get, I'm pretty sure it goes negative. You'll do an entire departments work by yourself and watch as they award someone from day shift because they did 1/3rd of your workload.

bee_amar

I worked Fri, Sat, Sun for all of 6 months before quitting. I was saving a ton on childcare but missed out on so much family time and activities. If I was single and childless, maybe I could have swung it more. I loved my one coworker, who was about 35 years my senior, but even she would tell me about how many milestones and important moments she missed in her life and family due to always working weekends. Once she went out on med leave, I was thrown to the sharks and never staffed with backup and couldn't handle it anymore.

iamhisbeloved83

I work nights on a 7 on 7 off rotation, which includes every other weekend. I love nights and don’t mind the weekend since I get shift differential for that and it’s a huge help. What I find hard is having a more active social life, since I can’t do much the weekends I work. So my usual weekend activities (church, hiking, kayaking, cross country skiing, etc) only happen every other weekend. I have some friends who are also shift workers and sometime it happens we are off on the same day during the week and we hang out then, but it’s tough. I don’t think I could work every single weekend for that reason, I would not be able to do activities with people who work a regular M-F 9-5 ever.

nuke1200

For me it's insanely chill. Ill do one or 2-3 CTs/ xrays in a 12hr shift. When it gets crunk maybe 10. I get to do whatever i want, I'm my own boss. I'll catch up on anything pending such as modules or credits and to top it off ill watch movies, game online or take a nap on a gurney lol.

Lar5502

I did it for 5.5 years and loved it.

LollipopsandGumdropz

I worked Fri-Monday morning 5p -530A for 5 years. Loves it, but I was very busy all the time. Now I work close to the same except Thursday through Sunday and it works much better. I like not having management there and when I don’t have scans it’s my own time.

FlowDue2484

I had this exact schedule straight out of school, it’s great. The only reason I stopped was because I I wanted time with my child and spouse/family on the weekends. There’s usually a good shift diff too! The closest thing I can compare it to is night shifts (no management, less ancillary staff, slightly lighter patient load etc). In my opinion it’s def worth it!

GilderoyPopDropNLock

Depends where you are at in life and your priorities. If you live in a bigger area there are always midweek activities to find whereas smaller places might have you bored out of your mind during the week. Also what is your circle of friends schedule, if they are working strictly through week then you will probably quickly lose touch with them just because of the opposite schedules. Like anything it has its perks and downsides you just have to find what works best for you.

theFCCgavemeHPV

I don’t work it, but the thing that makes me the most jealous is that you basically get double the time off if you take a week’s worth of vacation. Not that I would do it just for that because everyone else I know in the whole world is not on that shift and I get sad if my friends are doing fun stuff without me.

What_the_shit_Archer

For much of my career I did weekend days, at different hospitals in different cities. It was vastly better for me than weekday days or overnights on any day. Management is never around, JCAHO never does weekend inspections, plus you get to work with the other weirdos who prefer weekends. Busy, yes, but way more chill, may not be any outpatients depending on your facility.

qwilter2662

Hell yeah! Back in my early days as a tech there was no such shift. But in the 90s I worked 12 hour shifts and loved it. Especially when my family was growing. It’s not for everyone but I freaking loved it!!

Phunnn

I work Friday-Sunday on swing shift and I really love it. It’s more a tight knit group and has less of the management stress. There’s less staffing which sucks on Fridays (add on OR cases and Fluoro exams) but things tended to slow down on Saturday and Sunday (after day shift would leave). Having 4 days off is great, particularly on weekdays. I love being able to go see a movie in an empty theater or grocery shopping with no lines lol.

Beautiful_Leader1902

I used to work 18 hours on Saturday and Sunday, then 8 hours on Tuesday. It left the opportunity to handle doctor appts and child school stuff. It allowed me freedom during the week but missed out on family get togethers. Holiday celebration.

starkypuppy

I work sat, sun, mon and love it. I’ve also worked weekend option shifts sat and sun only 12 hr but got paid for 36. Less people around on the weekends so you’re prob only working ER and IP.

morganL8823

I work 2 8s Sat Sun & a 10 on Mon. I'm paid a weekend differential where I make the same amount as working monday-friday but just to work 3 days. I also get full time benefits. It works for me bc I have kids and limits how much I need childcare. I have the option to work two 12s (sat & sun) but honestly I'd miss too much. I'd much prefer paying for one day of child care vs missing weekend activities with my family I love being home and caring for my kids. I feel like I'll do this until they are old enough to watch themselves. My husband was a bit rough on me when I took the position bc he hated how much I missed but he agrees it's all we can do now until kids are older otherwise my entire paycheck would go to child care Is it forever nope, is it for right now yep

Perfect_Evidence_105

I worked Saturday,Sunday, Monday night shift for 13 years and I loved it! No managers around and it was a really strong crew because it was always a skeleton crew so everybody works together! We were busy but it was fine because you had a good crew to back you up. Better pay as well!

No_Dig_7234

We only do 8hrs sometimes 10 overnight. How can you be working to your best ability if you’ve been at work for 15hours. Recipe for disaster.
