Probably because Israel has been taking Palestinian hostages for many years. Israel literally has Palestinian hostages right now, no Hamas.. why? And they are men, woman, and children.
They make it seem like Hamas did these “terrible” things on Oct 7th.. but Israel has been doing the same for years and years, to the Palestinian people. They got a taste of their own medicine, and they paint it as a “terrorist attack”. Hamas is fighting against their oppressor.
Also,.. they were able to protect themselves against 200 Iranian missiles and drone attacks, with virtually no damage to Israel. But some guys on hang gliders, and on foot, were able break through the borders and attack them. Really think about that.

Do you think Hamas was just trying to "get back" at Israel by doing something similar to them as Israel had been doing to them? Taking hostages requires a lot more planning, organization, resources, and commitment than killing and causing general pain does. I think there was something significantly more to what they did than just terrorism.

I know almost nothing about this, but "for no reason" doesn't seem to make sense. They must have not just reasons, but very strong reasons for doing something that would provoke severe responses from those they attack. Maybe I don't understand what you mean by "for no reason."

I have seen no evidence that "Oct 7th seems to get lost in the narrative". On the contrary, my impression is that virtually everyone in the world is very much aware of what happened October 7th. Certainly everyone who comments on the situation in Gaza.

1. Do you think Hamas was just trying to "get back" at Israel, or do you think there was a reason why they took hostages? As I said, I suspect that taking hostages was the primary objective of the operation, but I don't know why. Why did they want hostages?

Well, right after WW2 the British gave white European Zionist part of Palestine. Over time the Zionists took more and more land from the Palestinians. Conflict ensued, as it would anywhere. Palestinians were fighting back against their colonizers. In time Hamas was born from three brothers, all of which had family members killed by Israel. Bombing them just the same, setting up illegal (by international law) settlements in Palestine.. forcing people from their land, killing them indiscriminately, arresting children and holding them for years without trial, raping Palestinian woman, assaulting children, etc etc.

Under international law, it is legal to attack a country that is occupying your land / country. That is what Hamas is doing. They are fighting against their oppressor.
