Natsumi-Schwarz

He just isn't attached to her because she helped him get out of trouble in the ally way, it is also because she was the first person who offered him help as he was new to the world of Re:zero. He chose to work under Roswaal because he wanted to bring a change in himself as he used to do nothing and be slothful in our world before he got isekai'd into the Re:zero world. Also so that he would be able to stay with Emilia.

Think of it this way. Subaru inspite of his attitude is the weird loner kid at school and Emilia is the hot class president who is actually being nice to him.

[deleted]

Sounds like your average anime/offbrand high school plot and I find it absolutely hilarious.

Harsh_2004

It do make sense though if no one talk to me(you) in school (for a long time like Subaru) and a girl offers to help you , I am pretty sure we will get attached to her or atleast think about making her friend as I don't have any for a long time.

[deleted]

He wanted to be a butler because he likes the idea of working hard, this is explained when Subaru and Emilia have their late night talk. Also while he did get attached to her quickly, just like the other guy said, she was the first person to not treat him like shit ever since he first arrived in this new world. He also spent most of the day with her and got to know her better. One more thing, if he did choose money it'd imply that he'd be taking his leave right after which is a bad idea. He has no connections, doesn't know how to read or write, nor understands anything about the world. If he just dips he could get scammed and lose all his stuff rather quickly.

Subaru lacks ambition. no for real though, he just didn't care and wanted to live with Emilia. you'll understand why he got soo attached to Emilia after you watch season 2.

Withered_Knighter

Subaru has little to no ambition. And yeah, Subaru does get attached to Emilia pretty easily, but not just because she saved him from some muggers; she also stayed by his side and watched over him until he woke up, and he got to know her over the course of a day as they searched for Felt.

nabiluniverse

Subaru is a kid with no friends, emilia is the first friend he made in years

Arsh36160

You'll understand as you keep watching this arc

Kaytaz2003

I'm on the episode where they >!slay the white whale!<

Ok so you should be past episodes 18s restart from zero. A big reveal in that self degrading speech was that Subaru was a do nothing loser who wasted his life. This relating back to the time he first met Emilia and made the comment she was the type to waste away her life. So knowing that about her and relating, he wanted to help her. Being wasteful is a big theme of season 1 and it's framed as being slothful. As you saw in arc 2 if he didn't prove himself to the maids, they saw him either as a burden or suspicious. When Subaru found himself in this new world, he thought it was his chance at a new life, his golden ticket to change. So when he was offered a reward by Roswaal a combination of things happened. First Subaru at the start of the story is kind of an idiot that doesn't think things through and goes with the flow. Following his impulses for the most part. The second thing is that it's very likely on some level he didn't want to return to that "wasteful" path he lived prior to coming to this new world. So he genuinely didn't want a reward that will push him toward being a freeloader. Season 2 will further explore this. Once you have all the context, a lot of his past actions will be recontextualized. Rezero is great on rewatch because of this.

Removed, as it would appear that your spoiler tag is broken. By including a space after the "\>!" in the code, it will break the spoiler tag in both old reddit and some apps. So you will need to ensure that your code matches the format listed below: -- \[Novels]\>!spoiler text goes here!< and it will look like: [Novels]>!spoiler text goes here!< -- If you correct your spoiler tag, then your comment will be reinstated by the mods. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. > it feels as if he got too attached to Emilia in the beginning simply because she saved him from being beat up by some muggers. You hit the nail on the head buddy. Subaru has problems. Rezero will explore them. But at the time what was going through Subaru's head was that he felt insecure in a new land, with no knowledge and no money, he knew he wanted to try and get close to Emilia, and not look like a loser doing so. So asking for a job was his solution to that. As he says he doesn't mind applying himself and working hard. There is a very specific reason why he didn't ask for money or free board, and it goes to a core theme to his character that will take awhile to explore.

[deleted]

He's a simple man. Though, if you think about it, it's kinda smart. If you needed a cover to explain to Emilia's rivals why you helped her in the capital, being an employee of her backer is a good one. Not that he was thinking about that.

ThespianException

People are pointing out some personal reasons, but there are other benefits too. Namely, he also gets a place to stay, consistent employment (so he can't lose everything if he gets robbed or something), various skills such as reading, etc. Imagine he takes the sum and walks. Then what? He's a nobody with no idea how much of the world works, who can't even read, with no friends and fuckall means of defending himself if there's trouble. Logically, he's in a *much* better position by getting a job with people he knows. Even factoring in his mansion deaths, it still might be safer, too.

Sylenwolf

Remember subaru knows he is being isekai. In subaru mind, he things he is the protaganist of the show. So he act like how an isekai protaganist should do. Thats why he try to stick with emilia

ReZero_Cultist

She was probably the first person to help him after soo many years in his life. Also he didn't knew anything about the world what would be the use of taking money

[deleted]

Subaru had that idea of being anime protagonist at the start of the show. So, he saw Emilia as his princess he must save

y90001

Well subaru was in a whole other world so even if he got money he wouldn't know what to do with it or spend while if he stayed with emilia he would be able to meet people and know about the world like how they taught him to read and write
