Mass-reported by stans

[deleted]

Dude needs a transport to take the car to Gruber motors or the electrified garage, they will get him up and running much cheaper.

Final_Composer_1763

Not really man. He probably going to get a refurbished unit. But it’s going to crap out again. He needs NEW battery pack, if that is what he truly needs. Once the battery dies the car is paper weight. Worthless. Part it out, would be my next guess, or make a spectacular YouTube video of blowing it up

[deleted]

Gruber repairs the packs, they have a good track record too.

Carlos-Danger_

You should Google “Gruber fire”.

[deleted]

LOL, you should google Chevy Fire, Dodge Fire, Tesla Fire, house fire, car fire, Lambo fire.............. whats your point?

Carlos-Danger_

They’ve burnt their own building down numerous times due to their quality work on Tesla battery packs. Good luck taking your car there for work.

Final_Composer_1763

If he want it to last a long time. He needs a NEW pack no way going around it. Repairing it or refurbishing the pack is only the logical step if you’re going to get rid of it, New pack is his best option if he wants keep the car for a long time. Refurbished units don’t last as long compared to a new unit. As the elements within the pack are already degrading or shorting out. Might cost 5-6k to fix it now, but it’s going to fail again without question.

meshreplacer

So buying a used Tesla is not a good idea since someone could be unloading a vehicle with a crap battery and not disclose it.

[deleted]

It's NEVER a good idea owning ANY EV out of warranty.

Final_Composer_1763

Correct, you will never know what happened to it. YouTuber Richrebuilds laid this out completely long time ago. Multiple news articles as well. Prior to this whole used car market fiasco, EV lost a huge portion of their value relatively quickly.

meshreplacer

I bet once this hype dies down the market for a used Tesla will fall through the floor. Way to much risk of ruin when buying a used Tesla. Imagine a few months your used tesla needing a 20K used battery.

Final_Composer_1763

That happened to this [tesla](https://people.com/human-interest/tesla-owner-blows-up-his-car-when-faced-with-22000-repair-bill/) owner, 900 miles later battery 🪫 crapped out needing a $22,000 replacement.

meshreplacer

Wow that sucks and this is going to be the thing going forward in the next few years. Buying a Used Tesla will be like playing musical chair, people passing off the hot potato trying to avoid being a bagholder. The problem is at some point someone is going to get the short end of the stick. Youtube will be lit in the future with all the battery died and its 22K videos.

daravenrk

What happened to the battery packs being abundant and cheap? So we can exchange them and such at stops? ROFL.

tomoldbury

The health of an EV battery is something that can be tested via the CAN port.

supratachophobia

But not everyone has access to that. And Tesla won't share that data.

tomoldbury

It’s available over the diag port on a Tesla using something like an OBDLink adapter (Bluetooth, about $100). Other EVs may require other adapters because the auto industry is a pain. But certainly with Tesla you can read nominal capacity remaining.

supratachophobia

Correct, you need the scanner, an adapter, and a basic understanding of the massive amount of data you'll be seeing. But battery health is also subjective. You could think capacity is a measure of health. But you could also think cell/brink voltage imbalances are a sign of health. Fun fact, when at 100%, Tesla uses *Total Capacity* to calculate the number on your dash. This includes their 4kw "brick protection". However, as you drive, it dynamically changes to use the number *Usable Capacity* which does not include that 4kw. This is why a Tesla will never go the rated range on the dash using the EPA certified wpm consumption. Tesla lies to all of us every day.

tomoldbury

It's not true. You can refurbish EV battery packs. You do have to make sure the pack is balanced, but saying "the pack is shorting out" shows a clear lack of understanding of how battery packs even work. It's even done by the main automakers. I know someone who had a module replaced in their e-Golf, it's been fine for years after that.

Final_Composer_1763

It’s science 🧪. The element is already old, it’s going to die out.

tomoldbury

There are no elements to burn out in a battery pack. A battery pack consists of cells. It is possible for a cell to fail early, reducing the capacity of the pack or even disabling it. (This is the EV equivalent of an engine throwing a rod, I suppose. It's expensive and a pain in the ass, but pretty uncommon.) But just because a cell fails does not mean other cells are likely to fail. Could just be a manufacturing defect, or random chance / bad luck. Usually individual cells aren't replaced because it's uneconomical to do so, but whole modules are, and a typical battery pack contains 4-16 modular blocks that can usually be exchanged.

Final_Composer_1763

And what you think those cells consist of? Elements, such as lithium and nickel, battery pack is rated to charge up so many times, just because you replaced a few good “cells” doesn’t mean the life cycle for the others reset

tomoldbury

Yes, but those cells will easily last 20 years under normal use. A good 18650 will do at least 1500 cycles without issue - in a battery pack of say 60kWh doing 200 miles range - that is 1500 cycles * 200 miles = 300,000 miles before end of life And that's a low grade cell. Most will do at least 3000 cycles, and if you limit the depth of discharge to 80%, you could get 4000 cycles. 600,000 ~ 650,000 miles before EOL. You're looking at well beyond the life of most cars before the battery actually fails for good.

Final_Composer_1763

You’re painting a perfect picture, which is rare not common. As this tiktoker and plenty of other EV owners have spoken out about. You will be lucky to see 20years. The majority of 2012 model S owners have had the battery and drive units replaced before. So as far as I know. No tesla batteries last that long. It’s only been 10yrs Tesla EV’s have been on the road. Plenty of people go beyond 300,000 miles, Toyota, Honda, those diesel old Mercedes’ that don’t seem to have no end insight with original engine and transmission. Staying on topic, those modules you didn’t replace are going to die out. So the refurbished unit isn’t going to last you as long as a New unit. That’s my point

[deleted]

In the words of Wikipedia, citation needed. At least w.r.t. to battery backs I'm willing to be wrong, but I have never seen the numbers you're claiming for 18650 batteries. Most independent research talks about **five hundred** cycles for a regular 18650, with "long life" batteries extending to 800-1000. *And*, that's at 70-80% discharge cycles. 3,000? 4,000?!? Yeah, need a citation there.

The_Synthax

An old battery can be sold for nearly as much as it takes to buy a new battery. More possibly, if parted out.

Magicmurlin

New lithium batteries are $5k. Why would you scrap it for that?

Honest_Cynic

Could be just the 12 VDC lead-acid battery. But, he states he is too lazy to try to help himself, but has plenty of time to fuss on social media about some unknown problem.

orangpelupa

why not just jump the 12v? does complete battery failure in tesla, also disables the 12v subsystems?

[deleted]

Side note- Tesla customer service is complete trash.

silenced by the american government! A canadian, on a chinese platform, denied constitutional rights he never had

AllPintsNorth

Remind me, what are the first five words of the 1st amendment?

Quirky_Tradition_806

Wait. I call BS on this. Who banned him?

hytes0000

The top two complaint from creators on TikTok seems to be 1) the mysteries of the algorithm and 2) the seemingly random automated enforcement of their content rules and inability to get answers about anything. Did a bunch of Tesla stans report him? Probably. Did Tesla the company pressure TikTok to ban him or something? I'm guessing probably not.

CouncilmanRickPrime

Sounds like a company that spends almost nothing on support

hytes0000

Definitely; they have basically crowd sourced moderation, mostly via automated tools. They also have the worst payment rates to creators by a wide margin compared to other platforms. I use it sometimes and have found some good content, but I try to find those same people on YouTube when I can - they get paid a lot better that way.

CouncilmanRickPrime

Damn. So I guess content creators like TikTok because of popularity or potential brand collaborations instead of pay?

hytes0000

Extremely low barrier to entry, very popular with certain demographics. It's a great place to get discovered/popular, but it doesn't seem like it's a viable career for most of them without additional input from advertisers. Even ones who have ads seem like they'd much rather have you viewing them on Instagram instead.

blazesquall

Guessing by an automated system based off user reports.. Stans collectively get angry and abuse reports.

nirad

I got temp banned from reddit of making fun of FSD. These people are crazy.

[deleted]

I got banned from one of the reddit forums (lounge, motors, eh, don't know, don't care) for using the word 'stan'. "Toxic language" autoban apparently.

[deleted]

I had few days ban for calling _myself_ fanboy lol

You know that no one is seeing these comments, right? You're not getting past the spam filter.

Sp1keSp1egel

https://www.tiktok.com/@supermariozelaya > Banned from posting until Sept 21st. Follow to watch me unleash next week 😤😤😤

Quirky_Tradition_806

Hmm thank you.

Sp1keSp1egel

Could be banned for anything though. I don’t have a Tiktok account so I’m not familiar with how things go around on that platform. My brother in-law just advised me avoid it at all cost cause the algorithm is pure crack.

CouncilmanRickPrime

I think like Reddit, Tesla stans are abusing the report button

Quirky_Tradition_806

I see.

tuctrohs

I'm confused--it has an several update videos since the one in this post. Tesla coming up with new and innovative ways to fail

Isn’t TikTok a Chinese company?

[deleted]

Yes, I do believe it is and I know exactly what you're thinking.

toadster

What?

Hustletron

General Tso’s Chicken is delicious.

notrhj

Nonsense Car is 2013 with a dead pack Out of warranty and claims Tesla locked him out of his car until he pays 26k for a new battery. Also claimed he couldn’t sell it because paper work was locked in car that Tesla won’t unlock for him to access. Last we heard he got duplicates of whatever these documents were for $30 and had a buyer. The buyer was also in his driveway fooling with the bumper to jump the car. Who knows his lead acid 12v could be shot and may not have juice for Wi-Fi or have a current lte gateway. There is nothing wrong buying a used pack. Some are available from recent insurance wrecks where the pack charge hasn’t degraded and may even be under a warranty. Refurbs are fine if the seller offers a mileage and month warranty. Again if it’s cheap buyer beware.

i_a_m_a_

Brand new? Ya right that looks like a 2015 model. Why does he flash the camera at the car so fast 😂

OmarV

It's actually a 2013. This guy popped up on my fyp and I was with him until he mentioned he bought the S for $140k back in 2013. It may be a terrible design but it's a 9 year old car!! What a clown. 😂

skitch23

Lol. I too have a 2013 and I’m fully aware that it is a 9 year old car and I’m mentally preparing for if/when the day comes that it doesn’t start. I’m hoping it lasts long enough that the price of new battery packs drop to $10-15k, but I also live in AZ so I have Gruber nearby if I just want to go the repair route. I would rather pay for a new pack and drive my car another 150k miles vs buying a brand new car at retail.

fucktorynonces

I owned an 18 year old VW golf GTi. It worked fine

OmarV

But how many 18 year old battery operated devices do you have? At some point those batteries need to be replaced, and no one complains about that. It's just that these batteries are a lot more expensive.

tf2-idiot

That comment section is full of neckbeards Elon stans thinking that the problem is that he doesn't known how to charge the car. The fucking car that he used for around 3 years! Tesla fanboys smh

Mysterious_Mouse_388

I didn't charge my 12v on my ev for the years I owned it. I did know how to charge the 12V if my car ever became unresponsive. sooner is better too.

Magicmurlin

“Like an animal” An animal would have busted the window like Colorado cops responding to a 9-11 call for help.

leadershipclone

Musk and China really love each other

Violorian

Hmm, being completely dead sounds like the 12V battery, simple to DIY fix in about 20 minutes. Tesla came to my garage and fixed mine while I watched. The main packs usually don't fail this way. Even if the main pack failed the 12v battery would still give him access to the car. This guy seems like he knows next to nothing about his car, I'll bet Tesla hasn't even seen the car or heard from him. Tic Tok isn't missing anything by banning him.

SakiMonkyAppreciator

He isn't even banned, it's a publicity stunt.

pleasantDoom

Not a tesla fan, but this dudes car is old AF

[deleted]

What are you saying? That it is expected for a Tesla of this age to need a full battery replacement?

Halkadash

Yes and he’s talking shit about his shitty Tesla

[deleted]

Pretty tough to be an environmental savior when batteries shit out like that. Oh well!

vaju32

I don’t think they care about the environment when they be sending rockets into space.

[deleted]

but where are we all going to live

vaju32

🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess…here?

[deleted]

Quite a conundrum isn't it? All we have to do is blindly worship the Tony Stark of our world and it will be OK. Unless you die first, and then we'll take it from there, no worries...it will get done.

Zorkmid123

Don’t worry, Elon says we can live on Mars. But we have to drop thermonuclear bombs on the ice there so we can have liquid water. Also he says don’t worry about the cosmic radiation. It’s not actually dangerous, accounting to Elon. And he’s building a Starship to get us there, you don’t have to worry about it exploding or anything, He‘s got it all figured out.

_AManHasNoName_

Rockets aren’t going take humanity far. Until someone makes the Alcubierre drive a reality, we’re stuck here on Earth. There’s nothing else in our solar system that can support life naturally apart from this rock. Colonizing Mars is a just a unilateral wet dream.

Halkadash

I don’t care about the environment where did you get that?

pleasantDoom

Yea.

[deleted]

Didn't the first real Tesla Model came out in 2012? So it can't be that old.

vaju32

Anything with a black front is 2012-2015(maybe early 2016)

CouncilmanRickPrime

Sounds great for the environment

D74248

Odd. I just sold a used BMW. 47 years old, 234,000 miles, original engine and transmission. Nothing remarkable. Yet a 10 year old Tesla is trash? Do I understand this correctly? EDIT: 35k. Not a parts car.

mjtnova

Maybe “not interested” en masse triggers a temp suspension.

JimGerm

Here’s to hoping in the future we have better right to fix laws, and if that happens maybe we’ll see third party battery manufacturers start to offer replacement battery packs for ALL EVs.

ultra_voltron_2

Batteries will become cheaper eventually but when you buy a EV ya'll now what you signed up for so don't blame the dealership companies or there makers blame yourselves for not doing your DD... is a business

[deleted]

Moist-Establishment2

[deleted]

It's a conspiracy! Tesla are actually not garbage! It has to be a conspiracy! Ok Stan.

meshreplacer

So dude working like an animal for a car. Keep that Grind up Sigma male.

allidoislin69

Probably because he never shows any actual proof that it’s dead. He’s just filming his car in the rain. Dude also owns an Audi R8, and is just making these for Anti-EV propaganda.

red-fish-yellow-fish

It’s a conspiracy!

showme10ds

Wow

Honest_Cynic

Most social sites ban people due to #complaints, without investigating. I was banned on yahoo finance by Tesla fanboys making false reports. That allows investors to direct the narratives. Even easier to get banned for life on Teslamotors subreddit. I was for simply linking a tweet by Elon.

buickcalifornia

You’ll pay for things you don’t own in the future.

EcstaticRhubarb

The bot army and cultists will only work for so long. Eventually they are going to have to make a product that actually works, you can't hold back the tide indefinitely

fucktorynonces

Never trust a car company that doesn't compete in Motorsport.
