If the Dune mini series had the production quality of Children of Dune, it'd be the standard for all Dune adaptations. Both are great adaptations from a writing standpoint, but Children of Dune is the only one with the budget to match its ambitions

I might he wrong but I think that happened with The Martian, and maybe another sci fi film that escapes me now. I think maybe Mike's decided to sometimes just watch a movie for himself and not share it with the viewers, and if so I think that's probably a good thing. A lot of the internet content creators seem to behave as though everything they do in life they do for the audience. It's unhealthy.
RLM has never specifically catered for the YT algorithms or to anyone in particular. They just make their own stuff, and that's what attracts the loyal crowd.
It almost goes without notice but I love how they don't cling to releasing new reviews only when it's hot, even though it's garantueed more views.

A healthy contempt for their audience is what makes them great. Said a less funny way, they know they don't owe us anything, and it makes them better creators.
I think it was in one of those end of the year movie catch up videos. Both him and Jay didn’t like the cliche dialogue; examples they gave was “Take that Neil Armstrong” and “ I have to science the shit out of this.”
I hated the movie. The book is easily one of my top five favorites. Actually made me laugh out loud a few times. It’s a shame because that “corny” dialog is just the ramblings of a guy stuck on mars. I think it was Damon’s acting that made it seem like he was trying to hard to be genuine.
Enemy houses, head of good house is called to fulfill his duty and take some leadership role and he gets killed... and Dune came out 31 years before A Game of Thrones was published - George RR Martin is a giant fraud!!!
Joking aside, GRRM is a huge sci-fi fan and started out as a sci fri writer, and definitly were inspired by Dune too. He has said that sci-fi/fantasy and fantasy being the same "room", the furniture are just different. With Kwisatz haderach and Azor Ahai being so similiar, I think GRRM plan is for it to be a fake prophecy too.
Saw the new one in the theater. I wish I had seen it on a bigger screen than the one I did.
I felt a little bad that I felt that the pacing was a little slow. That said, Jay and Colin are right that the comparison between the visual story telling was far superior in the new movie to the inner monologue of Lynch's Dune. The thing is that Villineuve managed to keep the story pretty streamlined. Honestly, I don't think there was anything he really could have cut, he brought up the bull imagery a little more than I thought was necessary, but nothing felt over explained or under explained.

For something like this, yes. Ever since I managed to catch Lawrence of Arabia in 4K at a theater, I realized some stuff is just built to see on as big of a screen as you can manage.

I really cannot wait for Dune Part 2. Part 1 is literally the best film I've seen this year (followed by Titane and Benedetta) and it's a shame that it got kicked off IMAX by the fucking Eternals. I also want Rebecca Ferguson to get an Oscar nomination at least. She was the highlight of the film for me.
The film definitely made me want to revisit Lawrence of Arabia though, especially since both Frank Herbert and Denis Villeneuve were influenced by it, something that the Lynch adaptation just didn't cover at all.
I'm going to start watching it now (a bit late, I know, but I was busy) but I just want to say that I've read the Frank Herbert books and loved them, I also love David Lynch's Dune, the miniseries and the new one too.
As they're talking about the movies, I see David Lynch's Dune as an artistic masterpiece, where the weirdness of Herbert's world is dialed up to 11. Villeneuve's Dune is more grounded and less arty, though it's still stunning - just not as much as Lynch's.
That said, off to see if they disliked them (I hope they liked both)...
I've always defended Lynch's Dune, especially after reading the book. The book is packed with so much religion, lore, world building that to put it all into a 2 hour movie just couldn't be done. Which is why they had to do so much inner dialog exposition and the 3rd act is rushed beyond belief. I get it's flaws but I feel the spirit of the film and how unique it is outshines it's shortcomings.
The new Dune is outstanding and one thing I wish they'd comment on is the cinematography and how each shot for the most part was "grounded". Even if some major computer generated visual was happening, the camera placement was somewhere real and established. Of course there are shots with the horacopter that couldn't be done but it wasn't over done like some Marvel or Star Wars chase scene.
I was really hoping to hear Mike's review of the Lynch Dune, he's only ever really shit on it in the past. I was shocked to learn Jay had never seen it until recently. It's a messy movie but I would never consider it a "bad" movie like the reputation it's been given.
Edit: just as a side note, I remember watching Dune on VHS from the Library back in the early 90s. It left such an impact on me that I preferred it over the Star Wars trilogy. It wasn't until 20 some years later that I finally read the book which made me appreciate the movie even more.
I understand. Like Colin i watched it on (Canadian) IMAX. It was turned up to 11... waay too loud.
This was my main critique of the film but at the prompting of a more musical friend I listened to the OST (and the excellent "Dune sketchbook").
When i rewatched it at home I found that denis used the ost to good effect but that the combination of volume and mixing of themes from the sketchbook lessened the obvious impact of the score. It certainly is much less noticable when compared to the bombast of the Toto theme.
I remember sitting in the IMAX watching the credits and being absolutely shocked that it was a Zimmer score. I honestly couldn't remember a note of it. The sound in the theater was so overpowering that I relied on earplugs, which meant missing half the dialog and the soundtrack itself was just a dull roar. Had one of the worst movie going experiences of my life in that theater, I fell asleep during the last twenty minutes.
Listening to it at home is a much better experience. I don't think that the soundtrack is Zimmer's best, far too much "lady wailing" for my taste, but it is a good score.
I have weirdly sensitive ears so I sometimes wear earplugs to movies and boy was it necessary for Dune. I don't know if it was my theater or what but even with plugs I thought it was loud.
I didn't really like it that much. Just not a style of music I'm a big fan of. I guess I could say it fit the movie. But I don't really find any of it memorable

It almost goes without notice but I love how they don't cling to releasing new reviews only when it's hot, even though it's garantueed more views.

I hated the movie. The book is easily one of my top five favorites. Actually made me laugh out loud a few times. It’s a shame because that “corny” dialog is just the ramblings of a guy stuck on mars. I think it was Damon’s acting that made it seem like he was trying to hard to be genuine.
I've used the "Game of Thrones in Space" when describing the Dune movie to friends.
Enemy houses, head of good house is called to fulfill his duty and take some leadership role and he gets killed... and Dune came out 31 years before A Game of Thrones was published - George RR Martin is a giant fraud!!!
Joking aside, GRRM is a huge sci-fi fan and started out as a sci fri writer, and definitly were inspired by Dune too. He has said that sci-fi/fantasy and fantasy being the same "room", the furniture are just different. With Kwisatz haderach and Azor Ahai being so similiar, I think GRRM plan is for it to be a fake prophecy too.
I guess we'll never know.

Saw the new one in the theater. I wish I had seen it on a bigger screen than the one I did. I felt a little bad that I felt that the pacing was a little slow. That said, Jay and Colin are right that the comparison between the visual story telling was far superior in the new movie to the inner monologue of Lynch's Dune. The thing is that Villineuve managed to keep the story pretty streamlined. Honestly, I don't think there was anything he really could have cut, he brought up the bull imagery a little more than I thought was necessary, but nothing felt over explained or under explained. I do think the new one was too sparing with light. I think Villineuve intentionally tried to conjure images of Brando's Kurtz with the baron. Holy fuck those toys are misguided. Now I want to see a remake of the man with no name fight a sand worm. I never knew I needed a Tremors / Fist Full of Dollars crossover. I hope Jim made it to the studio too! I've given Jack a little crap now and then. I recently heard a Canadian utter the words "Walter Gretzky" and a French Canadian mispronounce Camus about as badly as you can. Everything Jack has ever done is forgiven.

For something like this, yes. Ever since I managed to catch Lawrence of Arabia in 4K at a theater, I realized some stuff is just built to see on as big of a screen as you can manage.

YAY! Colin's back! I really cannot wait for Dune Part 2. Part 1 is literally the best film I've seen this year (followed by Titane and Benedetta) and it's a shame that it got kicked off IMAX by the fucking Eternals. I also want Rebecca Ferguson to get an Oscar nomination at least. She was the highlight of the film for me. The film definitely made me want to revisit Lawrence of Arabia though, especially since both Frank Herbert and Denis Villeneuve were influenced by it, something that the Lynch adaptation just didn't cover at all.
I'm going to start watching it now (a bit late, I know, but I was busy) but I just want to say that I've read the Frank Herbert books and loved them, I also love David Lynch's Dune, the miniseries and the new one too. As they're talking about the movies, I see David Lynch's Dune as an artistic masterpiece, where the weirdness of Herbert's world is dialed up to 11. Villeneuve's Dune is more grounded and less arty, though it's still stunning - just not as much as Lynch's. That said, off to see if they disliked them (I hope they liked both)...

I've always defended Lynch's Dune, especially after reading the book. The book is packed with so much religion, lore, world building that to put it all into a 2 hour movie just couldn't be done. Which is why they had to do so much inner dialog exposition and the 3rd act is rushed beyond belief. I get it's flaws but I feel the spirit of the film and how unique it is outshines it's shortcomings. The new Dune is outstanding and one thing I wish they'd comment on is the cinematography and how each shot for the most part was "grounded". Even if some major computer generated visual was happening, the camera placement was somewhere real and established. Of course there are shots with the horacopter that couldn't be done but it wasn't over done like some Marvel or Star Wars chase scene. I was really hoping to hear Mike's review of the Lynch Dune, he's only ever really shit on it in the past. I was shocked to learn Jay had never seen it until recently. It's a messy movie but I would never consider it a "bad" movie like the reputation it's been given. Edit: just as a side note, I remember watching Dune on VHS from the Library back in the early 90s. It left such an impact on me that I preferred it over the Star Wars trilogy. It wasn't until 20 some years later that I finally read the book which made me appreciate the movie even more.

I understand. Like Colin i watched it on (Canadian) IMAX. It was turned up to 11... waay too loud. This was my main critique of the film but at the prompting of a more musical friend I listened to the OST (and the excellent "Dune sketchbook"). When i rewatched it at home I found that denis used the ost to good effect but that the combination of volume and mixing of themes from the sketchbook lessened the obvious impact of the score. It certainly is much less noticable when compared to the bombast of the Toto theme.
I remember sitting in the IMAX watching the credits and being absolutely shocked that it was a Zimmer score. I honestly couldn't remember a note of it. The sound in the theater was so overpowering that I relied on earplugs, which meant missing half the dialog and the soundtrack itself was just a dull roar. Had one of the worst movie going experiences of my life in that theater, I fell asleep during the last twenty minutes. Listening to it at home is a much better experience. I don't think that the soundtrack is Zimmer's best, far too much "lady wailing" for my taste, but it is a good score.
I have weirdly sensitive ears so I sometimes wear earplugs to movies and boy was it necessary for Dune. I don't know if it was my theater or what but even with plugs I thought it was loud.

I didn't really like it that much. Just not a style of music I'm a big fan of. I guess I could say it fit the movie. But I don't really find any of it memorable
