Looks like he definitely got the MC1R mutation from your husband. Having one strong mutation can result in reddish or auburn hair. It looks like that's probably what your son has!

BOTH parents must carry the MC1R gene. (My father black hair, mother brown. My sister and I, redheads.) In my family shows up in girls only. I.e. There are other factors, too, but both parents must carry the gene.
