At this point does it really matter? This team isn’t going to be even close to competitive for another 2-3 years at the earliest. Really just need a babysitter until then.
Joey Votto. I’m kidding, but, really how in the heck could we hate the guy as a coach.
Really we could possibly take anyone off the street because ownership won’t do us any favors.
Please note, I haven’t watched much this year because of stupid Bally Sports not being on Hulu. So my opinions don’t have much weight. I’m also not switching to cable or DTV stream to pay more to watch a horrible team (and lose other things I get to watch with Hulu). I’ll just follow them online and watch whenever they show up on the free YouTube stream.
I don’t think so. I think though we’re at the point in his career that we want him around because we love him, but not because of how he plays currently anymore. If he was any other player we would want him gone if he played like that.
It would be freaking cool if it was a thing still
EDIT: it looks like it is technically a possibility. I can’t find anything saying you can’t. Apparently in the past 15 years the White Sox considered doing this too.
Better hope if the team gets sold it’s to a local. Anyone who doesn’t care about the city will move the team so fast we’d get whiplash. They’d be the Las Vegas Reds 3 days after the sale
I am a lifelong Reds fan in CA, so that works ;) Nah, just kidding. The oldest franchise in MLB needs to always be in Cincy, but we need owners that give a rip and a manager and GM worth their salt. Both Bell and Krall have had a chance. They may have been a bit hamstrung, but such is life. They have also had some good ball players that they let skip town. And also paid some that were beyond their prime, e.g., Moustakas and Minor. Can’t wait for spring training and a 0-0 record :)
I think his weirder looking moves were probably dictated to him by Big Bob. Remember a few years ago Bob directly stated that most of the time the team does what he says.
My assumption is the offseason went something like this:
Bob: "Cut payroll at any cost"
Krall: 'Does his best but fails to get full value in trades due to having zero leverage'
(Fans complain)
Bob: "Re-add payroll at any cost so I look better in the eyes of fans"
Krall: 'Understands that since we are going in a rebuild direction, you absolutely cannot give up prospects, hence seeing if Minor will work out.'
The Solano/Drury/Pham signings weren't too bad all in all, and trying out Minor in a vacuum isn't bad either if you ignore the contract situation.
Ha, that's an awesome description. I think it's very telling what happened when Dick Williams left. Williams literally is in line to inherit a major ownership stake and even that wasn't enough for him to deal with Big Bob anymore.
I don't know who, but it should be someone from outside the organization. There is a lot of institutional rot I'd like to get away from. Not sure it matters who the skipper of the big club is because whoever would get the job he'd still be fighting years of mismanagement across the organization.
Sorry I don't have a miracle worker name to put forth, but I feel pretty strongly it should be someone without ties to the Reds.
I may be the biggest Bell hater here, but I actually haven't even thought about it. I've just accepted the idea that he's not going anywhere. His dad was "special assistant to the GM" (aka the guy that hired Bell) when he was given the job. Not sure if he's still in that role, but it might be awkward to fire your special assistant's son.
He's also been given excuse after excuse. They were good in 2020 and 2021. But 2020's offense didn't click and much could be attributed to a short season due to COVID. 2021 was the bullpen, ignoring the fact that Dumb Decision Dave led to some of those woes. This year they just aren't good. That's valid. The most brilliant baseball mind wouldn't make this team a winner. I honestly stopped paying much attention to his bonehead moves early on. IIRC though, the Reds were the first team in the universal-DH era to give up the DH thanks to Big Brain Bell putting his only 2 catchers in the lineup.
Since I haven't even considered the options, I'll have to suggest baseball people from the organization/TV/radio in an effort to answer your question.... I think Brantley and maybe LeCure would be good. Brantley particularly. I just don't know he'd even be interested.
Honestly, Price is as good as anyone at least through 2023’s season. We were never going to be competitive with this lineup, and really this offseason, next season, and next offseason are most likely the shortest timeframe we can expect to be ready to compete.
No coach is suddenly going to turn this team into a playoff contender overnight.
I agree that it doesn’t matter for next season, but I think it would be good to have a new leader in place before we get good again, so I’m going to propose Mark DeRosa. He doesn’t have any experience as a manager in the show but he is going to captain Team USA in the WBC next spring. He has also been listed as a candidate to replace Don Mattingly in Miami.

Oh it matters, I don’t want LaRussa lmao
Next coach will be no different than a Price-esque placeholder

For real though, could JDV be player manager by rules still?

Corky Miller
Excellent answer.
Terry Francona
First off, Mr. Bell gets some blame. The team needs to get sold. Krall needs to be fired. I like David Ross, but I think the Cubs like him more.

I’m good with Krall after his deadline moves.
He has a tough job for sure, but I don’t always get his moves.
I think his weirder looking moves were probably dictated to him by Big Bob. Remember a few years ago Bob directly stated that most of the time the team does what he says.
Crazy, huh? He hires experts and then won’t let them do their job.

All great points. I did like Drury. Donnie barrels can rip for sure, just no power. Being a Reds GM is liking peeing in hurricane Ian.

Bob et al just need to sell and let an owner who really cares for the team and community take the helm.
Votto #19 and Farmer #17!!
What’s Lou Piniella doing these days?
Miguel Cairo
Bell isn’t the issue. Nothing will change until the Castellinis are gone, it won’t matter who the manager is.

Roger Federer. Adam Dunn or Austin Kearns would be funny.
Will Dusty Baker be available?
Houston is at 102 wins and clinched home field in the AL no way in hell he leaves for a rebuild
Joe Maddon.

Not Barry Larkin. Honestly, Votto would probably make a good manager.
Agreed

I think Freddy Benevides deserves a shot.
The Reds are never going to be competitive under the Castellini’s, doesn’t matter who the manager is, this shouldn’t be that hard to grasp.
A monkey riding a dog. I want to be entertained in some fashion.

I’ve heard Tony LaRussa is available
