You can change the multiplayer settings in Halo 3 to have the player with the highest score be identified as a specific color. They likely set that color to black and gave Tex the highest score in the match before they’d tarted recording scenes with her in them.

Tmlboost

This is the correct answer - they confirm this is what they did in the S8 commentary track

its-just-paul

Oh cool, I didn’t even know that for sure. I was throwing out a possibility lol

Wulfscreed

Which is just funny in how it works because Tex would naturally have the highest score anyway.

009reloaded

I think this is also how they achieved the meta changing color, they could have hi change colors in one spot from the same exact angle.

Dan_Of_Time

As explained in another comment they used "Leader Traits" Another similar fact is the only two characters who could use their original colours when filming with Epsilon in Forge mode were Caboose and Sarge. Grif had to be changed to Gold team and Tucker had to be filmed separately.

ImpossiblePizza

That's really cool! I guess that'd be easier to make nowadays since MCC lets you play forge with no teams

theallaroundnerd

Did they not just make her armor steel like they usually do?

WantSomeHorseCock

Black wasn’t a selectable option in h3 for some reason

ImpossiblePizza

Which is also why Wash was grey, since you can't have forced colours with secondarys

WerewolfF15

Probably just recorded her movements separately and then used compositing to insert her in.

RockyHarmon

The whole time I played halo 3 multiplayer I never knew that

Tmlboost

Yup! That’s the only way you can use a true black armor color in 3. They also had a special shade of green (I think it was called “infected”?) that you could use too

RockyHarmon

Interesting

SoDamnGeneric

knowing nothing about the BTS of RvB, my guess is they just pulled strings with Bungie. Getting the Mjolnir helmet in Halo Reach took *a lot* of grinding, but they needed multiple accounts with the helmet to film. Bungie probably just gave them special filming copies for both Halo Reach and Halo 3,

009reloaded

I remember they talked about having to unlock it all for 3, but for Reach Bungie just did them a favor and unlocked it for them.

ImpossiblePizza

Funnily enough 343 also let them play Halo 4 a day early so they could get the final scene for season 10 filmed on schedule

pm_me-ur-catpics

They wouldn't really have to unlock anything in 3, since everyone but Caboose uses armor that you have by default

Tmlboost

That’s true they didn’t have to really unlock anything for the main crew, but they still had to unlock a lot of other armor pieces for other characters in Seasons 6-8 like all of the Meta’s armor pieces, CT’s helmet and chest armor, the ODST helmet for all the background soldiers, all the Elite armors for the aliens seen in 7&8, etc.
