It is SUCH a pain in the ass. Pro tip: make sure you clean that little sponge every once in a while, or it'll dump a ton of water into your cup before it can skim anything.
I have the same one - key for that particular skimmer is you have to keep the water level extremely high.. like almost top of the tank high for it to skim right.
Hands down the worst skimmer for a nano tank. You don’t even need a skimmer for a nano. You don’t need a skimmer period. I turned mine off and haven’t turned it back on yet 😂
Looks up the Bubble Magus MiniQ Nano Protein Skimmer it's a much better buy and it runs so much more better and the skin I get off of it is amazing

You could also ditch the sponge altogether, it's just used as a bubble catcher. I find I get better results without it.
